Oh ****, your right! Why should notch fix the damn issue with limited block ID's? Its obviously going to become a problem, but lets keep putting it off.
Seriously waiting for a response to this one. It would kind of put all other points about ti taking up space moot.
I want a table block, but I don't want it to be a single craftable table. I want it to be a surface, like snow or a thinner slab, that can be placed like a slab, so it can be used to make tables, shelves, counters, and so on. And it should be able to hold a single item, displayed on its surface, without the item despawning.
Don't give me a "castle" block; give me stone and let me build the castle. Likewise, don't give me a table block. Give me parts I can build tables (or other things) out of.

Actually, they are required. We place cakes on higher areas to make them more accessible. If we were to pick from a regular block and a table, most players would select a table. Lets not forget that a table looks like a "T", that will give us more vision and less darkness. It would even make our houses feel less of a cluster.
By the way, are you trying to say that glass planes will be more useful than a table? Because that's a useless decoration that they've added to version 1.8 and it offers less than a table.

How is it going to become a problem? I'm honestly curious about that.
Anyways, I found putting a cake on a counter made from wooden planks looks rather nice. But a table block or shelf thing mentioned earlier would be nice but it isn't exactly a necessity so I can live without it.
Guess many people are afraid that it's not going to have a real use. However, I can say that it can technically be used as a decoration, as is a painting or a bookshelf. Sure I can live without it, but here they are trying to make workarounds for a table by using a fence and a pressure plate. What's so hard with just adding a table? I highly doubt people will be upset about it, especially when you try to implement a fence that looks like a glass. Telling me that glass planes weren't meant to be used as a decoration?

Plenty of reasons. I think block IDs are stored as bytes now, but they might even be short's, which means that the limit is only there because the item IDs start at 256.
Its obviously going to become a problem, but lets keep putting it off.
there are currently 96 block types, there are still slots for 159 more blocks.
Actually, come to think of it, it might not be a bad idea, but instead of using different block ID for chairs and tables and whatnot, it could use the same one and use different data values. (and then, tables could be "dynamic" like fences, and have their legs only appear on corners (much as fences will change to "connect" to adjacent fences).
On the other hand, I don't use the current chairs (stairs+signs) or faux tables, so I probably wouldn't use "real" tables, mostly because I could get the same effect with a block, I am not against it's implementation, though.
I'm pretty happy with all of the new stuff that's being added, but I have to bring this up again...
Notch: Failing to add what mods have done for ages.
The Fancy Pack mod has a great way of using Block IDs, and although it adds about 40 new possible decorations, only 8 or so IDs are used. It adds tables, chimneys, chairs, pots, bone decorations, chains, paper lanterns, stained glass, etc.

I don't think we should go all crazy with decorations but I'm just saying, a table is in fact useful. Therefore we shouldn't require a mod for something that majority of the people want. In addition, a table will not harm anyone, unlike some of the mods that would alter minecraft altogether. I also don't see why anyone would prefer a workaround over a real table.

In order to fix it, he would have to allocate more bits to it. Since this has to be stored for EVERY block, then EVERY block will need more bits. And due to how computers work, that is at least another byte, so 8 more bits. That is a significant change, and will increase the memory footprint of each chunk significantly. This means it takes that much more ram, and more importantly, takes that much more time ot load and store, therey increasing lag. Esp. on SMP, where you have to send chunks over the network, so increasing their size will further harm performance. This is something that simply cannot be done without a performance hit, and it will prevent an issue that may or may not actually come up.
And if it does come up, it will be later. As in the future. As in a time period where the average computer will be faster than it is now. Hence, the player base will be that much better equipped to handle the performance hit. I mean, its been 2 years, and we havn't even used up half of the block IDs. We could go for years before it becomes an issue, which is ages when you are talking about computers.

This.
This is one of the biggest reasons that we need to conserve block ID's for things that actually have a use that isn't already filled by something else.
Crafting table doesn't even look like a table what-so-ever. Who crafts on a table anyway? If tables do get added as a block, the crafting table should be renamed to work bench to cancel out any confusion, let's not forget that it'll also make more sense.
It's just a way to put a pressure plate on a fence. I'd focus all my energy into getting table blocks added if I were you and drop the whole hatred for pressure plate tables. Some people like them, some people don't.
A table block would be nice, though.
The awesome question that now needs to be asked is.. can we run redstone along the tops of fences? :wink.gif: And if so, will they act like electric fences to mobs when powered?
I do agree with the sentiment that we really need "real furniture" chairs we can sit on, and table blocks, etc. Of course, "need" is fairly relative in this case.
I like that you have to use creativity to make your chairs and tables, I'd much rather have to place a wood slab on a fence that make a crafting recipe. like putting signs on stairs look pretty good for a chairy chair.

So are you suggesting that we shouldn't get any more blocks since technically we could be "creative" and make anything possible? We can make fences out of blocks, so why do we have them? Same with a bed, a bookshelf, a sign, a painting, and so on. Wouldn't it be more creative if we could make workaround for them too? I remember how many workaround there were for beds before they were implemented in the actual game.
You see, some things would be better a block than an a lame workaround.
I don't know if I'd like a dedicated table or other furniture block, this thing may turn into The Sims. But I would welcome ability to craft a better interior. Plate on a fence post is a nice workaround, yea you can't stand on them but whatever. I would welcome an ability to manufacture thin plates out of (colored) wool (maybe even both square and round), and equally posts (a la fence) that could be placed anywhere: on top, sides, underneath. That could add significant number of possibilities (not only for furniture) rather than just getting a table of one style and eventually going back to square one. I'd also like the stairs to be more than just the wood/cobble and be able to put them upside down. I think that would get me covered 90%.
Seriously waiting for a response to this one. It would kind of put all other points about ti taking up space moot.
This made me laugh. Pressure plates have no collision detection. The reason you can't stand on it is because there is still a fence underneath.
The Sun rises in the North! Now these points of data make a beautiful line...
...Which is not required at all.

nor is 99% of the other blocks, nor are biomes, nor are pressureplates redstone ores and tools.
Rather shitty arguement, my friend.
