There has been a lot of talk on npcs and about griefing them and stuff with lava and fire, but I think Notch might have an interesting ai.
1. Npcs are epic fails
2. If Npcs notice you placing things like lava or tnt or fire, they may try to attack you
3. They're like pro players. Their houses are surrounded with traps. They'll combat lava and fire and tnt with water. They'll combat you like pro players do, with extra fighting ai. They'll cooperate with a mix of pro meleers and archers. They'll work against large numbers as well.
I hope they actually do things and work and be productive and build and mine and wow that was a long run-on sentence, just like in the Millenaire mod.
Personally I don't want the inhabitants to be pigmen so much as humans, since I feel that pigmen are dumb (as in not smart) and they wouldn't be capable of as much things as humans.
I would like to see them farm and chop trees and mine and trade and build and so on.

Why dosen't NOTCH just scrap the idea of the "Random NPC Village" and replace it with NPC's that give you quests or some kind of meaning to the game.
Half of the updates in 1.8 seem very very meaningless / pointless (Maby if tweaked then the ideas would be better)
You're one of those people who should play Skyrim. Your ides about npc villages are controversal and are pretty much exactly what most people don't want.
I don't think they would be playing like pros right off the bat. I do, however, it'd be interesting to see, in addition to the villages, a few loners who are good at minecraft, kinda like the player (in the hands of someone who knows what they're doing, of course)

I'm setting my expectations pretty low to be honest. I'd like for the NPCs to have shops and other things in their villages. If they actually expanded their village over time that would be epic. If I help them out by constructing some walls around their village or by building them a large building it would be cool if they were appreciative of that in some way.
But in reality, I'm putting my money on the bet that they'll just be a couple functionless cobble buildings with an appropriate number of NPCs wandering about doing absolutely nothing.

The expectations are the millenaire mod, so you aren't too accurate.
NPC villages reminded everyone of millenaire so for some reason everyone expects npc villages to be like millenaire. Including me. Anyway, there really isn't any other form of npc villages Notch could implement without wasting time or angering a whole lot of people.
Silly kids, you know Notch probably wont add it from scratch. He'll just edit Millenaire a little bit and then put it in the main game, taking the credit
I'm guessing the villages will be pretty basic at first. I think at best they will behave like zombie pigmen in the Nether. If you hit one they will all come after you (and be pretty tough).
Regardless of how complex they are in 1.8 they will likely be upgraded later.
Logically? - They'll probably be trapped in whatever chunk they are spawned in.
Attack in groups
will be able to scene disturbances in the chunk they where spawned in. (aka you breaking/stealing stuff)
My Fears:
That they are retarded NPCs who simply do nothing unless attacked.
They will send us on stupid quests such as "Bring me 16 Roses" for rewards like "Bread" or "Stone Hoe"
junky cobble houses
My Wishes:
Friendship stats; Able to get them to fight along side you.
That any requests they have are actually worth my running around (such as items you can only get by doing these quests.)
Nice looking wool and wood houses.

I'm pretty sure you aren't allowed to mod mine craft unless you give permission to notch that he can use that idea... correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure thus how it works

I hope they will.
Notch DID mention more farming options, and it would only seem wise for the villages to use it too...
Anyway, if they're not that epic, I'll get Millenaire again.
Don't the Millenaire NPCs spin around in doorways?
No, at least in the latest release of the YogBox.
Even if they do bug out a bit, I'd rather have them trade with me and see them farm and have them build me houses and stuff.

So what, you want random people standing around the woods to tell you to do things?

I don't understand what you're trying to say with that sentence.
