1.8 is obviously a big deal for Minecraft players. The whole game is about to change. It went from a simple "create-your-own-blocky-structure-thingy" to "survive-those-darned-creepers-during-the-night", and now we are entering the creation of Minecraft's "Story", the Adventure Update. Story may not be the right word to put it, but regardless. With the inclusion of NPC's, Villages, Ravines, and who-knows-what, gameplay and purpose may change. To make it short and sweet, map generation will change, new biomes (I think?), natural structures, and other things may make our old maps (from 1.7 and past), just that. Old, outdated, even possibly unplayable.
I may be worrying too much this, but the question still remains, will we still be able to play on outdated saves with the new 1.8 update? Will Survival mode make it through the update, contrary to the recent review of Jeb (his "I don't think so." is quite clear enough actually, but some people think that it was up for debate anyway)? Can we still play with the Adventure Update in our old saves? My guess is no, but surely someone can clear this up.
This was only a passive concern I've had. If there is already an answer out there, then *derp* to me for not reading it, I suppose. (This was my first post so, y'know, sorry if I did anything wrong)

Minecraft is impossible to explain, amazingly simple, and is as addicting as eating food. ^.^
MCF: There have been many questions regarding the future of Survival as it exists currently - will it exist in any form after 1.8?
this part is very important
and you can keep your save in the new update. All new content will exist in unexplored chunks. Also, as a result of changes in the terrain generation newly explored chunks will not line up with the old ones
Jeb has confirmed on Twitter (too lazy to go find it) that you can keep your pre-1.8 worlds, but borders between old and new chunks will be highly visible (e.g. wall of stone)

Some say problems can be solved by talking it out, I say they get solved by gun. If that doesn't work, use more gun.

Save your buildings as schematics in McEdit and paste them into new maps when 1.8 comes.
You can even use the same seed.

That's what I heard about the Halloween update, yet my maps which were started way before the Halloween update generate just fine, no walls of stone or anything.
If this is an actual problem this time, Jeb and the Mojang team should really develop a way for the chunks to transition well, rather than shitting on all of our work.

To be fair to them, it would be a lot of work to find some solution to a problem that is limited to this one time.
The weird boundaries might be kind of fun and mysterious, at least that's how I am going to approach it. Gives you bragging rights that you have a world which has lasted over many updates, even better if its a server. My world still has glitch trees with different leaves from the updates in Nov. of 2010 and I am proud of them

The chunk generator has been changed. They can't just make a new equation play nice with an old one. It'd amount to stupid quantities of work just to make outdated saves look pretty.
If you ask me, you should make a new map or get over it. This might not be the only time the world generator changes significantly, and you're lucky that your old saves will still work at all.
It's just silly, in my opinion, to expect them to spend development time making outdated maps cosmetically sound when the game isn't even finished. Seems flat ludicrous, really.
This is just an update like any other. There is no adventure mode, its just adding stuff, but the thing is, starting a new world would be a good idea, considering that you want all the ravines and dungeons and npc villages to spawn everywhere.
Your saves will most likely be fine. All it otherwise does is change biome generation and add features in uncreated chunks of your world. It isn't like when in 1.3, when the McRegion mod was added, which made all the existing leaves strange colours. Much like when the biome code changed from version to version in the earlier times of Minecraft, your saves are going to be fine. thecraww has a point, though, even if you do lose your saves for some reason, well, in his words, make a new map and get over it. There's nothing in Minecraft you can're recreate. (All but for time.)

We paid for the game. It's not unreasonable to ask that Mojang prevent updates from ****ing up our pre-existing worlds.

O. my. god.
Update adds new content. It's not like mojang is gonna ****ing take away the ability to place blocks. Notch himself said "We know that people love the building, and we'd be stupid to take that away, we're just adding in some meta-game stuff" - VERY Rough para-phrasing

this is actually partially wrong... your seeds will be completely different worlds... the world generation has to change to account for the new biomes and dungeon types. if you want to make sure your favorite seed is saved then go here. thats the idea behind this project http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/573419-the-minecraft-seed-vault/
Here's what you do:
Get the seed of the world and your house' coords, start a 1.8 world and use the same seed and go back to your coords, and you have the same world. (You can MCEdit any buildings you made or use toomanyitems to get items back)
Then you have your old world with villages and new biomes near your house (assuming the same seeds will work)

as i said above the seeds wont give you the same worlds after

I'm hoping this is another false alarm, though.
