Okay, now obviously there's a lot of concern about what Jeb said about survival. Honestly, I think everyone is jumping the gun when they think such a vague answer is immediately indicative of the total disappearance of survival.
Unless I'm just completely stupid, it seems readily apparent that the adventure update is an add-on TO survival mode, and changes the whole aspect of the game. Now, I was not around during the survival test, but I do know that certain actions would bring point rewards, such as killing monsters, and so on and whatnot. After a few versions, we had infdev and eventually Alpha, and no traces of that system remained. To a degree, survival wasn't survival anymore. Now the world was infinite, which meant that exploration was available, and to a degree, adventure.
So, what appears to be happening, to me, is simply this. What was formerly creative grew into survival, and now, what is survival is growing into adventure. I don't THINK it's going to be a different game mode. Even if it is, Mojang will not KILL survival mode, but simply call it a completed project, and move on to the updating of this new mode of play.
So either way, we aren't losing anything. Stop overreacting, the sky is not falling down on Minecraft. Wait until things are CLARIFIED because all this controversy will undoubtedly spark a reply from notch within a day or two. Till then, everyone needs to get their spiderman underoos out of a wad and shut up about it till we know what we're dealing with.

He is freaking out (at the people freaking out, that is).
