use mcedit to put a wall arround the places you explored befor 1.8 so you can still keep the world and if you ever want to explore 1.8 terrain then you no where the border is
As the person above me posted, MCedit is one solution. I've had some worries myself of an entirely different sort. New map height. Will the old worlds even be compatible with the new ones? That's what I would worry about, if I were you. Still though, MCedit should work.
MCedit scares me sometimes cause its so easy to screw up and stuff :/ in my opinion thats not my solution.
something completly random, probobly consisting of the word epic at least one. Examples, "Epicness in a can" "Wall o' epic" "Epic episode III, the return of Epic" etc.
Why are you people so sure that older worlds wont work with 1.8?1.8 only changes what the map generates not the save file or anything else. The only thing you will notice is a "boundary" between the chunk generated in 1.7 and the one generated in 1.8.
*sigh* That's actually a "newer" floppy, the 3.5 inch ones that weren't really floppy at all. The older ones were 5.25 inches, and lacked the hard casing.
The ones before that were 8.5 inches... and you're making me feel old now, stop. :smile.gif:

The new map height is an option, I believe. Presumably old maps will just use the same old height.
Here's what you do:
Get the seed of the world and your house' coords, start a 1.8 world and use the same seed and go back to your coords, and you have the same world. (You can MCEdit any buildings you made or use toomanyitems to get items back)
That won't exactly work because even with the same seed, the terrain will be generated totally differently in 1.8.
I'm pretty sure that Later I said I may be over dramatic. I was just saying that because it's a big deal to me.

You can use mcedit to delete chunks you aren't using so they'll generate again with new stuff.
Do you know exactly how I can do that?

Indeed, I'll probably make a new world to go find the other things I can't in my main world, I still haven't even found pumpkins in that world yet.

What "boundary"? What's that you're talking about?

Recently I've been having a mental break down, about what to do once 1.8 comes out. I've had that world since alpha and I don't really want to find everything by going half way across the world. Should I keep it, and at least try to find something? Or save it to a floppy or something and make a new world?
People Still Use Floppy Disks... Jesus Christ I guess the 300 pack of floppy disks I have will now serve some purpose D:

The "boundary" im was referring to is the sheer cliff or half a mountain that seperates the 1.7 and 1.8 (its the chunk error jeb was referring to)
This is what im talking about:
