Pretty sure I read old worlds won't be compatible with 1.8. On another note, why would you go out of your way to use a font with serifs? They're so ugly.
Only newly generated chunks will be affected from 1.8, So you can keep you're old world, except there's going too be some traveling involved too find new content.
I make sure to enjoy myself, but never get so involved in a world that I'll be afraid of the next update. I always start over after a new update. If a new .
ore or naturally spawning block is added, your old world becomes a lot more difficult to handle (i.e. lapis, pumpkins, new trees, etc.)
It would be best not to play super-serious until the final release. Don't invest too much time into massive creations.
Recently I've been having a mental break down, about what to do once 1.8 comes out. I've had that world since alpha and I don't really want to find everything by going half way across the world. Should I keep it, and at least try to find something? Or save it to a floppy or something and make a new world?
Copy paste it into a 1.8 world using MC edit, thats what I'm going to do.

use nether portals that way you don't actually have to go very far xD
here's my suggestion. Find what you like about your old world.
() You have a nice house, copy down the blueprints of it and rebuild it in the new world.
() You have large quantities of resources, then keep the world and expand upon it.
() You like the way the terrain is, I would recommend writing down the seed, but when 1.8 comes out, you'll be using a whole new seed. (all 1.7 and previous seeds would be invalid, as they no longer reflect what is currently there.)
() Take Notches advice and load a whole new map. I'm sure there is so much new stuff to do, that loosing your old world will not be quite as drastic. If anything Use MCedit to bring over structures you don't want to have to rebuild, and add them to your new world.
but that is my suggestion. I know I've put a project on hold just for this update. I was going to build a large Empire, Making towns and cities and connecting them by roads.
Your world is small enough to fit in a 1.44 MB floppy disk?
Well, if it's that small, might as well branch out. Every time Notch does a terrain update, chunks won't generate in sync with your older terrain when you expand your world, so you'll have weird cliffs and mismatching terrain. It will be pretty easy to determine what's new stuff.
MCedit an ENOURMOUS bedrock wall around everything you've explored.
That was you can dig under it to get to the new content, while staying with the old content. :smile.gif:
(new mobs will spawn :dry.gif: but at least the bigger stuff will be outside)
I am worried about this i hope they will autoconvert our worlds because ive built endermen panic rooms and 1.8 survival things i hope i wont havee to use world edit to move my stuff into the 1.8 region of the world D:

[font-"Georgia"]Endermen will spawn in any region. Mobs aren't programmed to only spawn in its updated area.
Guys, Jesus Christ... You can do everything you can in 1.8 in any region, except terrain elements (rivers, mushrooms, NPC Villages, and Strongholds won't be there until you expand and generate new chunks). You'll be able to see Endermen anywhere (given spawn lighting and space conditions). You'll be able to craft glass panes and fence gates. You'll be able to use that hunger bar. All of that **** won't be unavailable and suddenly pop-up when you reach new terrain...[/font]
idk if this has been suggested. Download mcedit, use the select tool and select the chunks you want (with you house and stuff). Then use chunk control to crop the rest. You will be left with a fresh world except for the chunks you had selected. Be sure to make a backup first because you can't undo it if something goes wrong.
When beta 1.2 came out i made a new save so i could see the new trees and lapis lazuli ore, one month later i realized that i had not been using my old first alpha world at all and there was no point keeping it. So i got rid of it. I'm planning to do the same when 1.8 comes out. I've already blown up a few things and burned down a massive forest that i had grown for no reason at all in my 1.2 save, I'm planning on deleting in 1.8.
I'd say get rid of it when feel that there is no need to have it, after you've found a world you like and have been successful with it.

because they will be a nice reminder of what minecraft was like in
alpha.
You couldn't be any more dramatic huh?

Wouldn't it take like 3 floppy disks?
You can have multiple saves you know... -.-
