A) without tresure the strongholds are USLESS!!!

Minor: something like special arrows and maybe somemagic tomes...
Major: stuff that haz AWSOME powers... like... stuff that gives u resistans to arrow damage/explosive/ ETC...
and RELIC: stuff like the SWORD OF THUNDER or WARHAMMER OF THOR and stuff like that =P
Hopefully no magic stuff, since I'm not looking to get an RPG out of Minecraft. I was thinking some older dungeon stuff with some newer items that, like other people said, could protect you from certain types of damage (such as a shield which you would equip in a new armor slot in your inventory.)
Or maybe new types of arrows like from Risugami's elemental arrows mod.
However, isn't Notch totally rewriting the "old" dungeon code as well in 1.8? Because wouldn't it make sense that the loot would change as well? That first screeny of the "ruins" Jeb released I think was some sort of experiment with that, though I could be wrong.
You could find (very, very rare, probable 10% of Strongholds and 5% of Dungeons, assuming Strongholds are larger and harder to defeat) a gem of some sort. There'd be several of them.
You can craft gold into a chain, and then craft the necklace out of the gem and chain.
Then the necklace could help you somehow, and it'd stay in your inventory on death. For example, a blue gem might make it so that you lose your breath half as fast while underwater. A red gem might make it so that you can swing your sword faster, or ramp up the damage on your swords. And so on...
No but they really should have chests with old dungeon things to give a sort of connection between dungeons and strongholds I like the idea of special weapons/armor also the idea a new armor slot for shields is a good idea maybe if it isn't a new slot it could be held to suppress explosions and deflect arrows. The strongholds should also have something of really great use otherwise (and I don't mean like saddles because those are frigging stupid). Something that can be used multiple times maybe?

i.e. If you find an armory in a stronghold, it could have weapons and armor and such.
If you find a treasure vault, then it can have ores and minerals and other valuable things.
If you find a dining hall, it could contain various foods.

could somebody explain how strongholds will function exactly?
they just sound like bigger dungeons
They are like dungeons, except like 70 times bigger, are made of different blocks (which will be new blocks) and have doors/hallways.
Not sure if they have mob spawners, but we HAVE seen leaked pictures of the strongholds where there was a zombie and a (dead) skeleton.
