I hope that this does not preclude the creation of an actual table block. One which we can actually put things on. Because really, this solution is sub par.

What if you want it on the second floor of your house?
And for the people who complain about not being able to place blocks on them : What would you place on them ? Dirt ? Oh yeah , cake! Wait, 1x1 cake on a 1x1 table ? Thats huge !
Decoration or even jumping platforms for adventure maps perhaps? I've seen your posts around here and they have been nothing but DEGRADING! You probably are just trolling but you must be really insecure to insult or reject everything you come in contact with. I personally think Erik did a the community a favor by allowing pressure plates on fences! For it be decoration or platforms(pad) on stilts(fences).
Dude, relax.
Everyone's got an opinion. You won't get anywhere in life if you get super pissed just because someone else voiced what they thought of something. If you can't keep your anger in check, you probably shouldn't be posting on a forum where people are expressing their opinions. Personally, I don't see much use for tables, but that's because I don't care about decoration, I just make homes that get the job done.
The reason jeb did this, is because it was so easy to do, just allowing pressute plates on top of fences, and voilà, a proper table. You can of course place an item over the table, but it will hover over it :S
Still, a table is better than no table, eh? =P
Tl:dr, the table is just for decorations, yes XD
Nope.
Currently you can place a Piston, put a torch below it and you have a table AND you can place stuff on it. Adding useless stuff and pretend you solved the problem is worse than leaving the problem be.
Is it that hard to add a new block type? They already have the second part of the piston as a block. Now just change it a bit and you have a table, a useful one.
No placing things on top just doesn't exactly do it for me.
weren't you that guy who started the huge flame war over whether or not making a new level every time you update is considered cheating. If you are, you are not welcome in this thread, and your statement is worthless. If not, your opinion is your opinion.

Yes. What if you're the kind of person who only builds 1-thick or 2-thick floors? If so, it'd look rather ugly having a random redstone torch in your ceiling *just* to have a functional table. Besides, these can be used as a new kind of platform for custom maps, and if you're looking for something purely decorative these'd work just fine.
Yeah, i tried that.. But the floor looked too ugly for me.. :S
