To be fair, the wording is ambiguous. It says "After the adventure update, you will be able to...", which could mean that after we get the update, that will be there, or it could mean that at some point after the update that stuff will become available.

The NPC villages thing could make people mad though. It seems everyone here thinks the NPC villages are coming in 1.8. The way he says it looks like it's coming AFTER 1.8 though.

No, it just means that npc villages aren't currently complete, but will be in time for the update.
I think that the 1.5 thread was titled "Beta 1.5 Upcoming Changes and Discussion" before the update came out, and changed to "Beta 1.5 Discoveries and Discussion" after the update. You might want to fix that since you can't really "discover" stuff until release.

the problem was that a person made a joke 1.6 thread called discoveries and discussion before the update. normally this would have disappeared, but someone sticky that thread. as a result, now people started to name them as "beta 1.X discoveries and discussion" before the update comes out
- Modes! You can now choose different modes inside the game, such as adventure mode, creative mode, and survival mode. (So it is "adventure mode"! Good news! =D)

i was really hoping for the new lighting at least in 1.7, but seeing as how everything but pistons has been rolled back, i guess i will be experiencing many minecraft-empty days seing how pistons are the only things being added in.

Hence the "we'll release 1.7 as 'just' pistons for now" (so we can really just give ourselves more time to work on 1.8).
