s0lidlyksnak3 is just jelly because he can't build an iron farm like the engineers like me and redstonevet90 can.
On another note, iron generators are actually quite difficult to create, contrary to the ******** you're blathering about, s0lid.
The machine itself may be quite easy to create (placing villagers in a ring with doors, 2 Iron Golems on a grass ledge within ring, 3rd Golem spawns and is pushed off ledge into water where they drown and materials collected elsewhere), however consider the following:
On any even relatively popular SMP server, just about any and every village within 1,000+ blocks of Spawn would be human-modified with every villager dead. I don't think it will be very easy finding an NPC village.
Consider Minecraft Omega for example, you can't find a pristine NPC village for over 6,000 blocks from the Spawn!
Do you seriously think that gathering resources/building an iron golem farm would take as much time and effort as gathering a ''lifetime'' supply of iron? You must be a kidding. :laugh.gif:
you are not taking into consideration the ingenuity and time it takes to gather the resources, find an npc village, get the npc to the proper population, and build it. if you take that amount of time and focus on collecting only iron you will be able to gather a lifetime supply of iron.
the amount of time and work is the same.
here an example:
Person A:
with a mob farm he works for a long time in the beginning and receives no iron and use up what items he has. it takes a long time before he receives any iron from his trap, but then he begins receiving iron quickly once its built.
Person B:
gathers items from the environment and works and gathers iron constantly. he has iron sooner and has been collecting it for longer than the iron farmer so he has built up a large stock pile.
it works out to each person gathering roughly the same amount over the same period of time.
----------------------------------------
and i don't care what anyone says ingenuity deserves some kind of a pay off.

I would have to say the biggest setback of making an iron golem farm, is waiting for the villagers to mate to 15, which takes about 4-5 days.
You have no idea how fast you get iron just from one golem. Since you can use a drop-off, they respawn INSTANTLY and each drops about 3 or 4. That means you can make an iron block about every 15 seconds..

Yes, I know, but you were arguing that it's not effective return compared to mining, in which case, as of right now you don't spend that much time and energy to get a quick return of one of the most useful resources in the entire game.
Not to mention that villagers breed, so you can have MORE THEN ONE iron golem at a time. The return of iron is astronomical right now.

its temporary. the concept of farming iron, balanced properly is what i have been saying it is.
I vote no. Why? Because... I dunno I thought it be amusing? Turns out it wasn't all that amusing.
Whether its nerfed or not the truth is I play SSP. Which means whether I can farm iron this way or not doesn't effect me simply because right now the only farms I have are the ones the villagers had. :tongue.gif: Oh and I guess my meat factory... er pig/chicken/cow farm.
So yeah. I wont be using it because I actually like going into caves and mining it for myself. Even when I had a skeleton farm I never really used it.
So yeah. you guys can have your endless debate on this subject. Which btw is rather pointless. Well ok I can see how it can seriously fk with SMP. But... well I'll just leave that to the admins of the server to deal with it. Besides I am sure someone will create some mod or whatever.
Stone golem would work. The one thing I haven't heard abyone else say is the fact that golems are also commonly made of clay. Clay golems would be just as good as stone golems because infinite clay farming isn't as op as infinite iron farming

spawn rate is being nerfed. https://twitter.com/#!/jeb_/status/173039984687845377

If you make spawn longer, villagers are left defenseless(after skellies kill the golem).
If you make it player-kill, they will still use sticky pistons.
Any change is a good one though.
i always agreed with it being nerfed, but i still don't think there is any harm in iron farming if it is balanced properly.
nerfing the villager spawn rate and golem spawn rate would probably work.
either that or nerfing the odds of a golem dropping x amount of iron ingots, but then people would just created more farms...
i'll have to think about this for a bit.

What do you mean by commonly made of clay?
the mob farms are staying guys. sorry.
