It really depends on the world. It can get glitches that will ruin the world for you, just make sure you back up regularly, and you should be fine. If something goes wrong than you can revert.
You can do whatever you want. Glitches tend to get fixed. I thought the lighting glitch was already fixed? so as soon as you update to 08 it should clear up.
I tend to stay with a world until the terrain generation changes as newly generated chunks rarely look right next to existing chunks.
Anvil format may help that going forward with the biome data stored with the chunk.
I have updated to 8 and still have some underground lighting issues.
My oceans are now generating correctly but the areas already spawned retain the clear look.

I really like some of the effects from different snaps. What would be a term to describe the building up of a minecraft world using differing versions to make a unique world>??? ?? ??

It's called "awesome"

EDIT: Actually that's a lie, some people call it "ugly" lol
On the last two snapshots we had ugly terrain generation problems: no caves on 12w07a/b and no (less) trees on 12w08a. Exploring the world with those snapshots mmight make your world lose some things and i dont recomend to use them until the are fixed... unless you are Really sure you dont mind about that. Keep in mind that most of th world editing problems are currently not compatible with the new "Anvil" so you cant use them to delete chunks.
Is this world more likely to develop problems down the line?
I have saves, but have progressed and i like what ive got.
