I underlined some parts to make clear that they are opinions, if you disagree, let's just agree that we disagree rather than flaming eachother under the rug? Thanks in advance.
I'm going to borrow the post of the person above me to illustrate my opinion on this iron golem farming thing
When playing legit it will take time... First find village, then get redstone (Alot), and then you need redstone skills and as you said timing... Id rather find them underground then :/
Effort + thinking invested into minecraft often results in quite decent to high rewards. Making a melon farm with pistons wich takes from a new world to fully operational farm quite a while, but after that point you've got infinite food!
For some odd reason nobody complains about that being "overpowered" or "needing to be nerfed".
Now making a melon farm is a tad easier than making a blaze farm or any other farm that requires you to kill a mob yourself. This is partially my own opinion and partially a factual thing (my blaze farm is an exact copy of the one ethoslab made and that took me quite a while to make, wereas my melon farm was something I fangled together myself in no time at all.)
I think were all overreacting again, if you think it's cool or if you think it's to much it doesn't matter. Bergensten mentioned a week of bugfixing and a possible 1.2 release the week after that so I see plenty of time for him and Kågström to go back on the drops or spawning behaviour of the golem. After all they are in charge of developing and I'd rather judge on the release than on a semi buggy prerelease.
I think it's cool we get some more interaction with villages, now it will actually feel like you have found something cool. Automated defense? Free iron? Infinite free slaves to put in your own distopian city of obsidian? It all serves a purpose now and that is more than enough for me. Yeah some people will make an iron farm? Will I personally suffer from that? hell no, why should I? If I need 10 stacks of iron it will probably be quicker to just dig down to bedrock and spelunk trough an abandoned mineshaft than to go trough all the trouble of getting 15 villagers in a confined location and fix all the other requirements for this contraption to work. If I need 1000+ iron I might build one because there is no realistic way to get 1000+ iron in survival minecraft other than making it your dayjob.
if you gonna spawn the items AND MOBS necessary to make this work, then why would you need it and how is the conclusion considered OP.
this would take ages to construct in survival, and when its complete, it would make for a nice reward.
Considering you can make it using dirt, cobblestone, wood and a bucket, it's hardly resource-consuming to build.
You farm your golems your way and I'll farm mine my way. It doesn't need to be tweaked or nerfed. We should be in the business of trying to suggest additional options to the game. It seems like some want to exclude and eliminate options for other players just because they themselves do not wish to use them.
Tonight I will be filling double chests with iron blocks in my SSP. Perhaps I'll make a sidewalk out of them.
Truly, its designer has some of the sickest darkness buried within themselves.
And I love it. Now I will be able to play the role of the helpful, smiling blacksmith; dolling out cheap armor / weapons to aspiring young adventures, or perhaps a holds [armorer / forge-master] for a benevolent king...
And all the while it will be unknown to my [customers / liege] the terrible price of proto-life that is being massacred by the hundreds to fuel their kingdom / adventurous exploits.
Nothing about this update pleases me more then an opportunity to personify Colonel Muska in the Minecraft universe. But you know... my Laputa will be an infinite resource machine powered by the friendly iron constructs instead of an all-powerful flying fortress.
Because really, who wouldn't trust this face?
Now to find a skins artist to complete the effect! wahaha!

I also just realized the irony of my last post and my signature.
But in all fairness; I did take the persona test fairly.
As I am unable to play at the moment; eagerly awaiting the video. I'd like to know just how effective this contraption is; or how four of five of them in tandem are.
Simple, make them take no lava, cactus, fire or fall damage. Then, no ability to exploit. If that seems to "OP", then just hang on a moment... *enchants diamond sword* ... alright come over here.

The suffocation machine would still kill them; there is no mob that is immune to that.
There was a video out there of a variant used in The End to basically farm huge numbers of endermen. It worked... disturbingly well. But oh god the cries are terrible... ;_;
That page didn't work for me but that's probably that tweet about nerfing it for this reason. I approve of a fix, but this is fun to play with for the time being.
I'll say two things about this entire thread, the users in it, and this notion of thinking you know what's best for the game or its community.
1) This is an excellent example of MC's player base. You did research on a new feature, ran some numbers, and abused it like a boss. Kudos to you, sir or ma'am. This will make an excellent addition to my server. I sincerely commend you for coming up with a system for farming iron golems rather quickly. I would be more impressed if you built this into a village somehow without taking much of it apart or making it stand out. Anyone that's hating on you for bringing attention to this possibility - instead of, say, raging about it, building it on a server where it gave you a huge advantage, or funding terrorism - I say this to them:
2) Iron is **** and I have so much of it I wouldn't even consider building this. I run a legit vanilla server with two other people and we haven't used iron tools since week 2, iron armor since enchanting was implemented, nor have we needed iron for much of anything else. In fact, the only reason I would build this contraption is to mass a ton of iron golems using iron blocks, just to stick them in the trap to reduce my iron stock.
You only need 2. Just find a village and build the spawner under it.

my 2 cents
Having your opinion overlap with mine basicly makes it "our" opinion being your own and my own at the same time. Can be perceived as funny I guess!

My personality in minecraft yup.
Also I'm uploading a video of it right now.

I was unable to quell my own maniacal laughter while watching this video.
Delightfully evil.
For their resources.
So Greed mostly.
Minecarts. Lots and lots of Minecarts.
I used to write original signatures, then I took an arrow to the knee.
