Seeing as they're insanely strong (I've heard that they're capable of killing you in 1 hit without armor) it's possible that this will allow iron farming. But is it worth it? Hell no.

I tested with no armor and no health regen. It's 8 hearts of damage.
Eh well at least it has been proven and i'm satisfied. Hopefully Jeb will make it only drop things when it is killed by the player. That's how it works with Endermen.
It's a large village so there are quite a few, but i added some more to speed things up (One would have to make them mate)
I am building it in a small village in a normal world to see what one can get from it.
EDIT: Image to show you what i mean (A lot of villagers to speed things up and see-through texture to show you how they die.
Are you losing villagers to the trap there, it looks like 2 or 3 off them get pulled in for every 1 to 2 golems. Although with time I'm sure with time you could modify the system to filter out villagers before the lava blade but I'm more interested in what the results of the normal village trap will be. How many villagers do you have in that one?
That will probably yield you a similar number of ingots to killing zombies.
Zombies drop other things too, on top of the fact that they have to be player killed. This exploit would be faster then a dungeon drop farm if the town is big enough(which wouldn't have to be very big).
And to create golems you need a lot more iron then you get from them!
Although infinity Iron? You already have it O_O;? Read all the whine thread about infinity iron all people have XD.
Just dig it out there is infinity iron underground!
I like to have some roam around the hills and forest and ruins. ^^ Really love this golems. They are nice for protecting certain spots on the map. So villager can live in other area too, and you can assist them with creating golems for them.
Well, Most of the villagers were just escapees because i forgot to block the house door beforehand.
Its about 100 in one house just to speed things up (Long day and not enough time to start big projects).
Maybe later i can try this again but with an improvement on the water-traps.
I might try it out myself later. Probably with 10 villagers to start and see how long it takes to get their numbers up to 100, they still consider a single door with a block above it a house right? See how much time and effort it take to get them to breed to large numbers where farming golems becomes efficient.
I seem to recall that they wanted to do that in the movie the golems are clearly a reference to.
I also recall it did not end well for them.
Aaaaaand now I have to retexture the golems dark brown.
Wait, that would be slow too..
How many villagers there are to spawn that many and whats the average rate of iron bars per minute?

Not even close to being done so I won't be sharing the texture yet.
On topic:
can you not simply force all the villagers in to one small building and have a trap around that?

Thing is, they spawn in villages. They spawn per certain amount of villagers, and if they die, they respawn within a minute after.
Many=/= Infinite

If you have a zombie grinder you could test it's drop rate and we could see how the iron drop rates compare.
How many villagers does it take to gain one golem and how many does it take to gain for each next one? (probably the same number?)
