With the addition of Iron Golems, a new type of easy to make mob trap can be made. Here's a pciture:
The cats will drive the Creepers into the water and drown them, while the Iron Golem kills the rest of the mobs. This is a very very simple example. The water could easily be made to empty the Creeper drops into a certain area, and the rest of the drops can be collected by running around.

It would probably be better if you had the golems stuck in a space and kill mobs that get near. If they just wander around, I wouldn't really call it a trap. I don't know what the extent of their attack is though.

Would adding more golems work instead?

While this specific example is rather small, the Golem kills anything that spawns within a few seconds. If this were to be expanded the golems would have to be trapped in a certain area to maintain efficiency.

I think that restraining the golems wouldn't wok out very well. As you said, they have to be right next to the mobs to kill them. Perhaps if there was something to lure the mobs there.

I found out golems kill snow golems too. Maybe if you had snow golems above them, but yeah, you can't pen up iron golems at all. x_X
I'm working on expanding the current trap to feature many little sections like the one in the OP. I'll also add a drop delivery system for the mobs that drown, and I'll see if I can do anything for the drops that collect on land.

Problem is, they can only attack what's right next to them.
