Look I have seen people saying "OMG Minecraft is turning into an RPG uuuuuuuu..." but the thing is it isn't it is not right now and probably never will be an RPG. Honestly thinking that minecraft is an RPG or turning into one is STUPID, it only has a couple of RPG elements like EXP or potions, just because it has basic elements of an RPG does not mean it IS and RPG... let me set this straight: Minecraft is not an RPG and is not turning into one, beta 1.8 was a great update and did not make it worse except for hunger. Why do people not like the beta 1.8 update anyway? It has a lot more pros than cons. Also this is Mojang's game not you'res you only bought a license to play the game you do not own it only Mojang does, also do not complain about features if you didn't say you did not like them. Minecraft is not an RPG it probably never will be, this is Mojang's game not you'res, they can do whatever they want with it, and dont complain about a game getting better.
Why are you just posting this now? I haven't seen any threads about minecraft becoming an RPG since just before the 1.0.0 release, why bring it up again?

ragnarock200: awesome, are those things with the creeper faces pistons or furnaces

To play devil's advocate, you do have some right to complain about the product you purchased constantly changing, but that's not the issue here.
As well, to be pedantic, it IS an RPG - a Role Playing Game - in that you Play the Role of a lone man trying to survive in this Game.
And another thing, why do people equate RPG with bad? RPG elements allow it to feel like you are progressing for all the work you are doing.
In that case all games are RPG's.
An rpg is basically you can play multiple roles. This doesn't really mean doing multiple things, it's more of being multiple people or creatures that specialize in different things.
If you could be a zombie vs. a skeleton, that would be an rpg.
Intuitively: it has most things that all rpgs have, and that was expected.
A long long time ago... I loved to play games like Secret of Evermore, Secret of Mana, Terranigma, Illusion of Time, Lufia, Tales of Phantasia, Golden Sun, Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy IX, Final Fantasy X (Final Fantasy X-2 was Crap...), Final Fantasy XII and so on...
Seems that my heros had more charisma then yours today... at least I think that's one reason all are fearing about the RPG-thing in MC.
Hah, FFVII ftw! My mc character is Sephiroth. :wink.gif:
You know back in the old good times a PEN and a PAPER was more then enough to play a RPG.
Sure Minecraft is a Sandbox game, but it can be USED for RPG too. It gives endless possibilities through Mods too.
It can become a egoshooter or a hack'n slay (isn't it it already XD?), or a adventure or a farm sim.
I for my part play it while crafting my own story into my survival map Tristram. It's at last for this map in my eyes a RPG, with defined rules and different classes. Still Minecraft is a sandbox for this RP.
To me it seems like it was completely meant to be an rpg, just in the form of a sandbox. It didn't really seem to be fully rooted as a sandbox geared towards an rpg, more of the other way around.
There are Dungeons....and there are dragons...
Its an RPG!

By that definition...any game falls under the definition of RPG. The problem with your description is it lacks what makes an RPG an RPG: storyline with an actual plot to follow or ignore.
High fantasy elements like mobs/swords/potions/enchants don't make something a RPG.

Just waiting for Forge to officially release for 1.13.x to remove unneeded mobs from 1.13, like Phantoms, from the game because, in my gameplay based opinion, they add nothing of value to the game.
Fun fact: Clicking a bed every 30 minutes doesn't make you a better player, it makes you one who clicks a bed every 30 minutes. Wouldn't you rather just mod them out of the game completely?

and your goal is to defeat the dragon in The End
Minecraft is as much as an RPG as much as Skyrim is. Both have crappy story that really isn't even worth doing but at least Minecraft you can have more effect on the world then you can in Skyrim

That's also wrong. You know how when the guy is dressed up as batman, the girl dressed up as catwoman, then the next day one dresses as a fireman while the other dresses as a nurse?
It's not really about storyline or not, that's linear vs. open-ended, it's about being different 'roles'. In stereotypical rpgs that's archer, fighter etc.

Minecraft doesn't even have a story.
And that's something you can do, but it isn't a mandatory goal. "Your goal" implies that's something I want to do, that it's something I have to do when it isn't.

Are you going to tell me that a Lego set is also a RPG as well?

In Skyrim its different? the main quest I don't want to it is horrible because BGS can't write stories.
The End is The End follows with credits so yes that is goal whether or not you agree. And you role is "your survivor" in Minecraft you make your own as you do in Skyrim.
Skyrim and Minecraft share much pretty every mechanic other then magic but you can argue even that is in due to enchanting buffs.
Also as I stated in my post a advantage that RPG"s including older TES had is more effect on the world as a player. You can shape the world literally in Minecraft but in Skyrim anything you do does not make a hint of change.
I never stated that either MC or Skyrim are RPG's frankly I don't think either are but if you believe that Skyrim is a RPG then you must also put Minecraft in the RPG genre as well.
Minecraft is a free roaming fantasy game based on sword fighting monsters, traveling over great distances of exotic land, and collecting useful and often magical items. It has always been, and always will be, an RPG styled sandbox game. None of you should be surprised by this.
The whiners vs. counter-whiners war has been almost fully dead for months now (except for a few mild flareups). Why are you trying to revive it?

The reason if it was meant to be an rpg or if it was a sanbox geared towards it, isn't really importand. I get the feeling for you it isn't importand although :wink.gif:. The most importand aspect is, having fun while doing what ever you do in minecraft. The game is not forcing the player to play it as an rpg, you can just build if you want. Or do fishing the whole day and let it be a fishing game. Or a farm sim. Maybe play Harvest moon with it, it would fit perfectly too, just take a villager Nose as a wife.
I guess a lot of people just forgot to have fun while doing it, and think that the game itself needs to give them the fun they want to have. But this will not work here. And that's why a lot of people complaing against or supporting for more or less rpg function. They just can't decide anymore on their own what they want to do and want that the game change into it what they want. It's so easy to say something is CRAP or should be kicked out when you don't like it. It's so easy to say I want to have this and that added. But it takes a lot of time for the programmer, and a lot of people liked it maybe or disliked it although.
So much is possible if people just could learn to use their imagination. Seeing how many threads are here like this one, it seems many people lost this ability.
Well, the basis on me saying that is, I imagine it like this:
Hmm, let's add swords n' bows and munsters
Hmm, maybe the player should have a base, maybe the player could make the base however they want!
Hmm, maybe since the player fights things, maybe they can survive too, since surviving gets you more into the game then just slaying enemies
etc etc.
Basically I see it as geared towards a stereotypical rpg, but it gives you freedom simply because it is sectional and not 'full tang'.
It reminds me of the shooter games that have walls that are coded to break. Those kind of games are one-way disguised as do-whatever-you-want. Minecraft is do-whatever disguised as a one-way(rpg fantasy where you slay the dragon at the end).
Let me just say one thing, who held Minecraft in the palm of their hand when all of the "RPG" elements were added?
Notch.
And now Jeb is getting Minecraft on the right track again, which means that we probably won't see any more "RPG" elements added
Unless, it is tweaking the already added ones.
Kudos and happy holidays from Javalavadingdong!
