I like things like this, its funny, amusing and diffrent and not a bog standard biome.
I mean, its ****ing awesome having going there, theres giant mushrooms... theres mushroom grass and theres cows with mushrooms on them... How is this a please remove?
Go to hell.
You're right, maybe they should also add a wheat biome where they have bread trees and cluckwheats(bread-chickens) and maybe have wheat randomly grow in almost every place in the game.
It's like they tried to make almost the entire game mushroom land then added a mushroom biome. What other food gets its own biome, animal, tree, and spawns nearly everywhere in the game?
Not only that, I could make mushroom soup at nearly the beginning of the game and they bother to make all this stuff for one item.
What's the point of mycelium? I could make shroom trees and harvest those. The list goes on..
You're right, maybe they should bring back the old apple recipe and turn that back into a prize. I get the point now, things should be prizes and not useful.
On our SMP server, the only mushroom biome we've ever founs is at 1270, 4000. You can walk from spawn though about 15 biomes to 1000, 3400 and then you have to swim, or you can cut down the walking by about half and start swimming in an ocean at 0, 2000. It's not something you would find unless you were exploring very far away so I think the reward of having overpowered mooshrooms is worth it.

*finds cows, makes a farm
*finds mushrooms, gets bonemeal, makes mushroom trees
What's the point of a cow that does both? Why would I want to travel to it? Why is it that most people who play this game don't even try to find one??
Not to be harsh, but we already have everything that a mushroom biome has(-mycelium that grows mushrooms slower then a mushroom tree).
Oh, thanks guys for reminding me, you need the most difficult enchant to bring back pointless mycelium to your base.
You're right, maybe they should also add a wheat biome where they have bread trees and cluckwheats(bread-chickens)
That's actually a good idea. The oceans are mostly empty right now, with only some boring little island and, sometime, if you're lucky, a mushroom island. More variety in the kind of island you could encounter would gives more reasons to explore the oceans. Like wheat island, but also sea ruins, iceberg, chocolate island (with cocoa beans).
Nice Non-sequitur. But irrelevant to my previous statement.
I'm basically saying that mycelium is the old version of the gold apple.
More cost then benefit.
Not only that, but the rest of the biome is easy to obtain at the beginning of the game.
It's interesting but most people don't even bother to look for one.

Let me pose a simple question back to you then, why does everything need an explicit purpose or benefit?
(Not trolling or baiting, I'd like to know your stance here)
Not only that, but the rest of the biome is easy to obtain at the beginning of the game.
Partial truth; mushrooms and bonemeal can easily replicate the abundance of mushroom soup very quickly.
(Weather this is good or bad is the topic of another debate)
However you are unable to re-produce mooshrooms outside of this biome without already having some to breed. The benefit of this particular mob is two fold. Not only does this one animal have the largest number of uses over any other animal; but with the addition of a single wooden bowl you have effectively unlimited food.
They are very rare, so if you think they are useless, just don't look for them. I have never seen one on my worlds so far (only with some seeds I tried), but I would be very exited if I found one!
--It is exciting finding one, but then it wears off after 10min, afterwards you realize you have to either live in a biome just for its new resources or you have to acquire silk touch to move it or drag a hybrid cow over km's with wheat and hope it doesn't die.
A perfect example of a rare useful food is the melon. Sometimes it can be hard to find a mineshaft, but when you make it there, you have to fight many things off and possibly look for hours.
In this case, melon and mooshroom both take a lot of effort to acquire. The difference is that melon is a new food source, you don't need to craft to eat it, it's nowhere else in the game, and it adds a new tier of food.
Melon = well worth the effort of going out of your way
Mooshroom = is not only worthless, but you have go through even more work if you don't want to live in the place you found it

I find this to be very interesting, because I have the opposite view.
In my opinion; melons are worthless. (except for the rare case where I feel like playing with splash healing potions)
And here is why:
Melons only restore 2 food, and grants 1.2 saturation rating.
Lets compare that to the simple to acquire staple: Bread, which restores 5 food, and grants 6 saturation.
A single bread is almost three and a half times more effective then a melon.
Looking only into comparing the usefulness of carrying a stack of melons vs a mooshroom; the melons win out only in terms of portability. The mushroom soup (unlimited, when near the mooshroom) grants more then enough nourishment to allow a player to perform tasks such as building, clearing land, or setting up a project while negating the food factor entirely.
Additional food information; and the heirarchy of food effect vs space can be found here.

#1 They give you 1 energy
#2 Here is why melons are superior to most other foods:
I can grow, let's say 3, melon stalks.
I can run by maybe 3 min later and all of them will most likely have already grown back, some grow back instantly.
They are superior to all other foods in battle, they heal 1 so they are almost the most efficient food next to the cookie.
Basically:
They grow in swarms and quickly
They stack
They are extremely efficient
You don't even need to till land for them to come back
If you are out of food, you can run back to your base and bash a couple of blocks in which you already get 35-some slices without much effort at all
I use them in sync with another stackable food source, steak.
You have the max energy food source and an easily regenerable 'filler' source/combat food source to keep energy at 90%+ without wasting extra food points.

But this is wrong... do you not understand what saturation is?
If you want true best-battle food; you need golden apples, which offer an astounding 24 saturation.
Saturation is a tricky mechanic; its essentially a second hunger bar that must deplete before your main hunger bar begins to lose food. So in essence; the larger your saturation, the more you can do before you start to lose hunger again.
Lets take a pvp scenario:
Each time another player hits you, you lose .3 food, likewise: each time you attack you lose .3 food.
So a melon; which grants 2 food, and 1.2 saturation; will only protect your hunger bar from either 4 hits, or 4 attacks. Then your hunger bar starts to empty again.
If you can, in that same time frame; chomp down a golden apple; it will only restore 2 icons (4 food units), but grant 24 saturation. Meaning: a player has to attack you, or you have to attack them 80 times before your hunger bar is able to go down again.
Basically:
They grow in swarms and quickly
They stack
They are extremely efficient
You don't even need to till land for them to come back
If you are out of food, you can run back to your base and bash a couple of blocks in which you already get 35-some slices without much effort at all
I will agree with this reasoning though; once you have acquired some, it is a limitless; low maintenance food.
It is not however; the most efficient food due to its incredibly low saturation. The steaks on the other hand; are the best food to mass produce in terms of restore and saturation. (All numbers are in the link from my last post)

And not to be rude, but that is pure speculation. If you have a study to back the claim, I'll retract that statement.
Just be glad mushroom biomes are extremely rare! Another pointless complaint. *sigh*
