There are few reasons of why redstone lamps are quite useless:
1. The ilumination is exactly the same as glowstone, it isn't brighter. Why would i spend redstones and glowstones in an item that is the same as glowstones? I can use a texture pack if what i want is to make glowstone to look beter.
2. A player can't put redstone in a vertical position which means that the redstone can't reach a redstone lamp in the ceiling.
3. Redstones are block limited (can't be used in all the blocks).
For the point 3, i use one of my builds as an example:
I really like to use glass for build stuff (the other blocks look...plain) but can't put redstones in glass (for some reason)...which makes the whole concept of redstones lamp impossible for this specific build.
You can even move lamps with pistons. So you can even include pistons for your lighthouse beacons if you wanted t. Before you would have needed many pistons to block all the light for a lighthouse. Now you only need one or just a redstone circuit.
I like how you think one of the most useful, most anticipated additions to minecraft is useless. I also like that you think all the blocks in minecraft are plain so you built your house as several perfectly geometric cubes and rectangles that are all the same exact block. I imagine that you typed this post sitting in front of the fire in a red velvet robe, top hat still on from your day working at the bank. Maybe thinking about your safari back in 1896........ MMMM QUITE PLAIN MMM YES MMMM QUITE QUITE.
Redstone activated lamps/glowstone opens a whole new world of redstone lighting devices and pure functioning aesthetics.
I can't wait to rig up my branch mine with function service lights, and the ability to shut down the mine while turning all power off in it with a single switch.

This could be used with a mine cart for a cool effect.... turn on lights where you are, shut them off where you aren't, or even create mine cart crossing lights for intersections.
I think you mean you can't power glowstone, because it's considered a transparent block like glass and ice. But you CAN put redstone directly on glowstone again, and it has some interesting properties now because of that:

First of all, I wouldn't call lamps one of the most useful or most anticipated features of Minecraft. Secondly, ad hominem much?

Statistics show that people who tell others they need to get a new computer are twice as likely to use "gay" as a negative descriptor and will most likely never see genitals in real life, at least while not in prison.

Creepers. That is all.
But its quite weird.
A natural glowstone produces the same light as a lamp powered with redstone.
Which is entirely irrelevant.
there is only 1 light level higher then glowstone. and the only thing tha produces that is the sun.
so 1 light level is really useless
Creepers. That is all.
Remember kids, when the mod crashes delete system32!
Not everything needs an use, Minecraft is made for building. By your logic we should also remove stairs, slabs, bricks, fences, fence gates, etc...
would just need an extra space in the ceiling above the light & some space in a wall
Besides it has a purpose, a light that can be turned on/off with pistons.
Oh and the reason why redstone isn't placed on glass is because it's 1 sided. You wouldn't see the redstone on the otherside of the glass.
Edit:
You can activate a lamp on the ceiling.

You can even have a lowered lamp.

You can just put a torch on the side of the block you have the torch on now. :]
OP: Why does it even matter if it's in the game if you think it's useless? Which it most certainly is not.
