1- use Dispensers and pressure plates
We all know that one an item is dropped, it will take 5 minutes for it to disappear.
Rig a system with 2 dispensers, one on top of the other. The top one is only activated by the pressure plate being OFF (when the first item disappears).
That way we have an easy 10 minute countdown (time for those two itens vanish, one after the other).
Now, if we are talking about a server where admins usually change the time of the server, then all that is needed is a zombie to activate the first dispenser (by using a shaded area with pressure plate).
That way every time that it is day, the zombie will run to the shade, activating the pressure plate and the dispenser, that will trigger the 10 minute countdown.
I almost forgot: After the 10 minute countdown, a piston extends in the shaded area pushing the zombie out, so that he can only go up once it's night (when he stands on top of the pressure plate)
Turns out we are discussing the exact same thing in the other topic.
Suggestions so far:
(zombie climbs the block trying to reach the villager. it will power the lamp all night. Once it's day the zombie will die drom the sun light and the lamp will turn off)
EDIT: I left my minecraft open while here on the forums, and guess what? A zombie (naturally spawned) went by itself there and activated it! IT WORKS!
PS: When the sun goes up, it takes 16 seconds aprox. for the zombies to die.
ADVANTAGE: Very simple to build
DISADVANTAGE: Requires a mob closeby, or several "stations" across your world.
And these two videos:
EDIT:
4 times more efficient!! Can attract mob from all 4 directions!
I can hardly believe nobody has thought of/mentioned these two things before...
First of all, zombies don't care if snowmen attack them in this pre-release. I've tried, but the only thing that can distract them from anything is you.
Secondly, villagers can/will walk into their houses sometimes during the day, as has been mentioned. Why not put the pressure plates in two or three houses, and hook them up to a few AND gates?

SPAAAAAAAAAAAACE!
"Look at me still talking when there's science to do. When I look out there it makes me glad I'm not you."
Here's a good one. Have two or more isolated villagers with houses and yards they can't escape or be attacked inside. Pressure plates in the house as suggested earlier. Only when the redstone device receives input from all (or most) of the villagers will the device do whatever it does at night. That would greatly filter out the noise from villagers wandering in and out of their houses.
I have an idea: Create an enclosed building with pressure plates and a door. Extend one block of shade over the door. Fence in the area around the door. I don't know how the new AI works, but I wouldn't think the villager would run inside when it's raining if it already has shelter? Then, when it is night, the villager runs in and sets off the pressure plates, and there is no rain interference. I have no way of testing this, as I don't use the snapshots, but does somebody know if this would work?

I've been a Minecraft player since Beta 1.7, still my favorite game!

I've tested that, and unfortunately they do run inside when it's raining, even if they have shelter.
if you mining, you dont' know the sky, this should be do the alarm, or your house is underground so what you will call the theory? villager principle? or VILLAGER redstone gate(lol) :laugh.gif:
I'd say this idea sounds like a big boring waste of time. You can just look at the sky to determine if its getting close to night, or a watch underground.
My advice: Don't over complicate things, have more fun doing something like going to the Nether and building a pig man grinder.
You can say that about most things in Minecraft. Why build a Pigman grinder when you can run around with a sword?

If you find a zombie spawner, you can make a single station and it will be reliable.
All you have to do is open a tunnel (with sunlight) long enough for the zombie to die during day if he tries to reach the villager.
During the night he will be able to reach due to the lack of sun light.
This is certainly easier and more compact than Etho's.

Are you telling me with this contraption I can wire my mine with lamps that turn on when its day? I LOVE YOU!

As i contemplate the ability to make houses and attract villagers, triggered lights could really help accentuate their presence and movements.
You don't need a spiritual leader to achieve enlightenment.
You can say that about most things in Minecraft. Why build a Pigman grinder when you can run around with a sword?
Why run around with a sword when you can paint with ALL the colors of the wind?
This has my vote for non-sequitor of the day.
