I suggested the concept because I see tons and tons of people saying that leather is useless, along with some other things. As soon as you get iron, BAM every below that isn't any good. And we have tons of iron...
If Iron is going to remain the most useful (in terms of being in the middle) and it's going to stay plentiful. Then having a longer start to get to it, would decrease it's over shadowing of the other lower materials, at least for a little bit.
My thought is that cows should drop more leather than they do right now. Virtually every cow you kill will give you 2-3 steak per kill, but only 1 leather every couple kills (usually). I think that their steak dropping rate should be reversed with their leather dropping rate (this would also make porkchops less obsolete to steak).

That's a very interesting idea. Hm... Cows give meat, leather, and milk.
Leather would be great in the start to help survive, while pigs would be the choice for food if one doesn't like to farm a lot.
Sounds like a great idea for a game starting thing

It would be interesting to see how a player make better use of lower tier things in the start. Instead of being done with them in 5 minutes.
Minecraft isn't a game you play for 5 hours and then "beat". There's no reason for things to need to be "fast" and "right here right now"
It's like players don't know how to take time and just play a game.
It's also not realistic to spawn in an area without caves. Also your spawn is generally chosen based on seed. It would mean they would have to decave the area around where you spawn. It's not easy to do.
The best thing to do is adjust features, not get rid of them or do something assumptive with them(making none around spawn), because then unintended consequences run rampant.
They could make caves spawn either less often or smaller and make ravines very rare. I honestly don't know what the direction the thread is going but that's my input.

Kyo you always have something interesting and good to bring to the table.
So...do you think there is any other good way to make the game flow a bit better? Instead of skipping half way through the tree in the first hour or 2 haha

Hm, you brought up a a point with the generator there.

Not sure how this would make the game more challenging, or keep the starter gear relevant. :huh.gif:
When I'm just trying for a fast start, I skip caves entirely, dig a shaft straight to L12, and start branch mining. Sure, it might take 1 or 2 more minutes to get iron, but I won't need it before then, because I'll be mining in safety. In fact, when I do that, I don't even bother with leather armor, which I do use when I'm spelunking.
Unless you're on a self-imposed challenge that limits mining, caves are definitely not the easiest option.
*reads op*
Or you could have not presented the most bat**** insane 'suggestion' known to man, or maybe thought for a second that maybe people would yell at you over it?
Maybe?
Just a thought.
But honestly, removing caves to ANY DEGREE only serves as a negative. If you remove them just from the 'starting area', i'd just move somewhere else. Why the hell would I stay somewhere with pretty much nothing to entertain me?
Spelunking is honestly the most fun thing you can DO in Minecraft. And I got over the amount of ores you can get pretty darn quickly because the pros outweighed the cons.
And honestly, regular mining is mind-numbingly tedious and boring. My god I am never starting a strip mine for diamonds, i'd rather watch paint dry.
I stockpile my iron. I stick to stone picks, shovels, and axes. I use my iron for Swords and picks for diamond and redstone. I also occasionally make armor from it.
My opinion on your idea: I would sooner suggest removing obsidian before I suggested removing caves. (Joking obviously, I'm trying to exaggerate my discontent.)

--Well, iron(and all ores) need to be more rare, caves need to be more rare, mobs need to be more difficult. I've already tested this and it does make a huge difference. It takes me a very long time to get enough iron for armor(and other things) simply because getting a food source was difficult then finding coal was difficult etc. etc.
Right now, in vanilla, each step is simple and easy. If we made things rare and enemies powerful it steeply increases time to get to the precious iron. You can still get to iron quickly if you're smart, but the thing is, you won't have abundant amounts of it. You will still have to work to get it, unlike now where it's falling out of cave ceilings and dropping from mobs.
The easiest solution is to just balance the difficulty levels available and give users control of minute details in the terrain generation, such as ores.
Wait, I think that just caused a paradox, does anyone know how to avoid blackholes?
Hold your head down and kick parallel to the sun. If you miss the sun, just keep kicking. You'll eventually after a few thousand years get to Alpha Centuri.
To the actual suggestion, ME NO LIKEY :/ It only makes the game more tedious and removes a vital thing Minecraft has: Mining. Also, couldn't one just go down in their strip mine and mine for iron anyway? Without the lava hazard this makes digging straight down easier than jumping down into a cave/ravine.

Yeah, stop trying. Leave it to the pros. Best idea you've had yet.

Also I think someone suggested it but: a slider option for caves occurrence.
