I think renewable resources are good. I know the world is huge and I can probably find stacks and stacks of iron around my base, but knowing it is finite I try not to waste it on frivolous things like spare buckets, flint n steel, or sheers.
If iron ingots drop even a little from zombies to cover these basic items I'll actually make them knowing I am not cutting into a finite supply of iron.
With that Endermen should also have diamond as rare drop. Terraforming the land I go through even enchanted diamond tools quickly it would be nice to know I can farm back diamonds even if it is at a slow rate. Like an hour farming endermen in the end for a few diamonds on average.
Call me a hippy, but I'd like to see every resource have a renewable path even if it is slow/in-efficient.
The best thing they could do is severely nerf it. I think getting an iron tool or the idea of iron nuggets (or coins?) is great. It should be very infrequent that a zombie should drop something though. If you farm zombies all night a new sword is a fine reward.
Skeleton special drops should be changed though. I dont like armored zombies, but I like the armored skeletons. Give them swords and put them in fortresses or make them rare. Now you have a new strong enemy that drops armor pieces.

They could just drop chainmail armor, which is weaker than iron and is unobtainable on survival.
Good point, I never thought about it like this before. An easy solution would be to make the mobs only drop iron weapons/armour etc. if you kill them with a diamond sword.
I like this.
It is ridiculous how i can convert 1 stone sword into 2 iron swords ( obviusly depending on my own luck ).
But a good system would be this :
If you kill them with wood, nothing extra.
If you kill them with stone, only wood items would be dropped.
If you kill them with iron, stone items would be dropped
If you kill them with diamond, iron items would be dropped.
It makes much more sense and would make it more balanced.
Since when the hell is iron armor, tools, and weaponry END GAME stuff??? I always always always have iron the first day... Anyone who doesn't get iron their first day is wasting their time doing something else.
Anyway, this type of feature appeals to new players or players that like a bit of random luck and rewards. I for one think it's awesome.
I say keep the feature... If people out there are going to set up mob traps and farm iron, then who really cares... Its the way they want to play the game. If you don't like it then don't exploit it.

What's the point of getting a lower tier weapon than the one you have in your hand? Also, iron is common enough that you can go find 4 pieces in less time than killing enough mobs to get 2 swords. I think it's cool that you have a chance to get a random tool or armor drop from a mob. Shakes things up a little.
A player in a new world could get end-game equipment in his first 5 nights if he stays out to kill monsters.
You know, in my first five nights I'm usually pretty end-game unless I spent a ton of time on the surface building my starter base up without mining too much.
Just saying, it's not too hard to jump down into the caves with some basic equipment (stone tools, wood, saplings, some dirt, etc) and tame the underdark.
That said, I wouldn't mind further-reduced drop rates for the armor, but either way I kind of dig this, because now I won't have to waste as much iron trying for cool enchantments. Something about a chest of differently-enchanted armors just chilling in my house is pretty sweet.

Seems kind of gamey. I see where you're going with it, but it feels like a pretty arbitrary rule with no real explanation to the player. I know I'll probably get a few "minecraft doesn't have to be realistic" comments for this but this is more about making sense than being realistic.

Exactly! End game is a relative term anyways; a lucky spawn could land a player in the same chunk as a stronghold with the end portal.
Mobs dropping iron is quite possibly one of the stupidest ideas to be added recently.
I've just read and agreed with many topics about how iron is way too common (or at least, the frequency of caves makes iron too common) and now MOBS DROP iron, iron weapons, and iron armor?! That is wrong on so many levels.
Here's what could be done to fix this:
* Adjust iron to chainmail, and make durability from 10%-80%
* Adjust the rarity of these drops to about 2% instead of whatever they are now
* Make only the humanoid mobs drop iron tools/armor, and have them actually WEAR what they drop. A skeleton wearing an iron chestplate would be much harder to kill than a regular one; a zombie with a sword would deal much more damage. So that effort = reward. Maybe some of these rewards would still have minor durability damage, perhaps depending on how much you hit it during the fight.

End game items is all determine by preference.
Personally, I don't see Iron equipment as endgame. Getting to the End and killing the Enderdragon... just little achievements.
The only End Game I see is when you hit the point to where you want to start over.
You do understand that if you think it makes the game to easy you can just not use those drops right? Hurr durr.
Two players make a sever together. They're both at the same level of playing when they start out.
First Night:
Player 1: Whoa, where'd you get that iron sword?!
Player 2: Oh, I just punched this zombie into a corner until it died.
Player 1: Oh, ok. We should probably make a mine or look for a cave to-
[Player 2 uses the newly-found iron sword to kill all the mobs around their shelter, gaining another iron sword, a pair of iron boots, and a pickaxe in the process)
Player 2 is now at a serious advantage over Player 1, without ever having to explore a cave or make a mine.
In fact, all ores should just drop from regular mobs: no need to make them harder or anything.

Yeah... this could shift any balance in a server. :\
That example does show how it can be gamebreaking.

This of course assumes Player 2 does not die in the process, in which case Player 1 could simply take their stuff. Or Player 2 gives Player 1 the duplicate drops. Not that any of this makes sense because how does it matter who is "ahead" for like the first 15-20 minutes (a night and day of mining can easily catch up with hunting random mobs in terms of iron) if you're cooperating?

This. Why do people act like mining is some great challenge? Mining is completely safe, simple to do, and (for iron purposes) doesn't even take long.
Mining to diamond is not the endgame. It's not even close to the endgame. It's more like the entrance to the mid-game. Go conquer the nether and the strongholds, build a city or a multi-km railroad network, get a full set of enchanted gear and potions, and then you can say you're in the endgame, so far as it even exists.

Sorry but i said End-game equipment.
To most MC players End-game equipment is all tools made of diamond and full iron armor, because that is how you would accomplish all those " end-game " challenge you wrote there. Blazes are a big deal, and without atleast a diamond sword and good armor you would be dead before you even get to 6 blaze rods.
If you dont believe me with mY MC example lets change to terraria.
End-game equipment could be considered : Full hallowed set, Excalibur and Megashark.
However having this does not mean you´ve finished the game, you just have the tools that will let you finish the game, you cannot beat skeletron prime with a copper sword and armor.
We should just petition for chain mail drops.
We've waited for chain mail to be implemented for so long, and this is the perfect chance.
As for drops, would like the mobs to wear the drop-able items.
