. . .
That awkward moment when it was designed entirely for the intent of being used in Creative to give the player extra room . . . awkward.
It's just that the interesting environment inspired people to try surviving in it . . . .
It would be nice if Jeb added the ability to change the ground height (i.e. how deep the dirt is) for Superflat in the more world options menu. It would also be cool to be able to customize what the ground is made of. I'd like a world with ground made of obsidian or bedrock at layer 1 so I can have full freedom to build and blow things up in my test world.
It's possible to have a permanent home and master the Superflat world in Survival. Although you will not have trees or tools, you can use a number of tricks and apply a little patience, common sense, and cunning to keep yourself housed, fed, and exploring, indefinitely.
There's a handful of threads about surviving *and thriving* in Superflat-land. Some people have even started Hardcore flatworlds and are still going strong. I suggest you look at them briefly, even if you have no intention of starting your own Flatland survival game. It's like the ultimate survival challenge, beyond even the "Survival No-Island Ocean Start" maps.
The eye of Man is never satisfied. No matter what the conventional wisdom says, a few people will always turn it on its ear. It is the nature of humanity to conceive of and accept the challenge of doing what they are told cannot be done. Build a permanent orbiting space station and inhabit it? Done. Permanently settle the Nether/End? Done. Permanently settle the Flatlands? Done.
I personally think that it would have been nicer if a superflat was just a normal world without hills/mountains/other terrain features (stuff like trees would stay). Yes, of course a totally-flat world is heavily biased towards creative mode construction and experimentation, but who said that's all it should be able to do? I think it's a waste of the world type's potential to restrict it to only one game mode. More options = more fun.

Sure it is for creative but it is on level 5/6 thats make it useless.
If they make it on level 60-65 and increase the high then it is the same and you can make something in the underground :wink.gif:
If you want to build underground, why not just use a regular map?

You don't understand.
The entire reason the flatland world was created was to have an easy canvas for creative mode. It started as a request from players. It wasn't made to be some sort of quirky survival map.
Sure, people can use it for that. But why, exactly, should it be changed to be more suited for survival when it was created to fulfill the request of people who wanted it for creative purposes?

I am going to bring up the example of signs. It's pretty clear that they were intended to be used for the specific purpose of putting text on them to be read. But people discovered their potential to be used for blocking water/lava flows. And there are also boats. They were created for the specific purpose of traveling long distances of water in shorter amounts of time than by swimming, but then people discovered their potential to be used as high-speed elevators.
So, since signs as a liquid-blocker and boats as elevators were never intended to be used those ways, should be restricted to their original purposes?

This isn't a case of something being intended for something.
It was a request made by players which Mojang was nice enough to fulfill.
So basically it's not so much like trying to use something which is there for a new purpose, and much more like you trying to ruin someone else's birthday party because no one got you a present.

I don't see how adding survival stuff like trees to a superflat world would ruin someone else's birthday party. I know for a fact that I would never use a superflat with or without survival features, regardless of terrain levels, etc because I like the randomness of a normal map. I am merely defending the principle of more options = better.

Because trees get in the way of building.
It is meant to be a blank canvas.
If you want to survive there turn on pre-generated structures and raid villages. Or just edit in a forest.
Better yet, go to getsatisfaction and make your own request for a flat world type that includes survival stuff.
You are not asking for more options because changing the current flatland world type is taking away the option that people wanted for creative.

When I brought up trees I intended them to only appear in very small amounts every so often ( like 1 for every 6 chunks or so and thus very easy to clear out for building space) and not in super-thick forests like normal terrain, and I really should have specified that before.

You're still missing the point.
Biomes, trees, hills, all those things completely destroy the point of having a blank canvas.
If you want a different world type all together, fine. Go and petition for that. But leave the current flatland alone, because it's already giving an option that people wanted. It's something people have always been interested in having for creative and testing purposes, which is why generating a flat world was an early feature of MCEdit and you could find downloads for flatland maps. Now it's available in the vanilla game because so many people wanted it. If you really think more options are better then why would you not want the option of an entirely blank canvas available to people so easily?
I'm sure they will include more gen tweaks as the updates go on. In the meantime i could find a few uses for superflat.
It's a blank canvas. You can make whatever you want whether that be sprites, or buildings. You can also freely terraform the area to your liking. Some people find existing terrain distracting.
i know I sound like a broken record when saying this but, it is meant for creative BUT it is possible to use for survival, in fact i have a hardcore map dedicated for it. just find a village with a blacksmith that has saplings in the chest. its a really fun challenge.
I find that superflat is really useful. I can understand why people might not though, I'm sure I find a tons of things in minecraft as "not useful". It's all a matter of opinion.
