I lol @ people who are dubious of Steam. There's no good reason to be. Steam is an awesome platform, has great prices, and runs smoothly and quietly in the background. It's great. Plus everything being linked to the account, never having to install stuff, or download patches. Steam rocks.
Surely, we don't need any more spies and should try to kick everyone out that is already collecting data from us for THEIR FINANCIAL PROFIT with YOUR DATA (read the news, bro, this is not a conspiracy, this is daily practice!).
Let's just ban all businesses from making a profit. Every business is hereby a non-profit. Let's see how well that works.
Has this game improved because Blizzard made it so every ocelot can play it now?
Yes. Why?
Most people who made this game what it is now aren't playing anymore because of how the game has changed, driven by the majority.
The devs (with feedback from statistics and the community) made the game what it is now, not some sour old players from vanilla.
Also, why now?
Why not now?
Instead of spying on your computer, they could've just read the forums, too, there's not a single day where I don't read something really interesting and inspiring on here - granted, between a lot of trash.
Believe it or not, the forums are not the majority of players. We give good feedback, but we should not be pretending we're some sort of entitled elite on the direction of the game. Nor would I want us to become some sort of entitled elite that determines the direction of the game.
But that leads straight to the next point. Do you want that majority to be the deciding factor for the future of this already great game, then vote yes for sending your data.
"Yes" it is, then :smile.gif:.

When all is said and done, Will you have said more than you have done?
Do you have as much as a clue about the amount of information being gathered about you without you knowing?
Google has warehouses of it. So does Facebook.
Doesn't it occur to you that anyone willing to pay a couple of bucks/euros/renminbi to know everything about you, your family, your friends, your whereabouts, your income, your credit line, your sexual preferences is a bad thing?
Notch isn't asking for any of that. He's just asking for some usage stats for a game he developed. I happily supply that info to Steam when they ask for it.
Vanilla what? I was talking about WoW
"Vanilla" is the term used to describe WoW before the expansions. It's a common term in the WoW community right now.
and without exception, everyone I know who used to love this game (for a variety of different reasons) has turned his back on it because it has now been made so easy that skill is not important anymore.
I guess I know different people then.
New difficult content will come back to WoW in Mists. Most of the top tier players only stick around long enough for the new content anyways, and it's impossible for even a company like Blizzard to turn out new content as fast as the top tier players can play it.
But I am convinced that the majority doesn't necessarily give the best answer, especially not if the maturity of some users is taken into account.
I'm not convinced the majority of players are like this. And the information Notch is asking for right now is mostly about general usage, not about specifics like griefing.

Yeah...tried that didnt work now they think that Notch is tricking us into thinking there is going to be a turn off button
People need to take off their tinfoil hats. Seriously, these people must have something major to hide. It's pretty funny actually. I honestly hope the code suggests it tracks more than just Minecraft, but in the end actually doesn't. Just so that these conspiracy nuts freak out.

Notch probably just wants to see who's computer Herobrine is living on.
One of my biggest concerns about Minecraft has always been the launcher and the online nature of playing even if you are just playing single player.
I know that you can play off line but the fact that you have to log in to use your username etc has always bothered me.
The fact that updates used to be forced on me whether I wanted them or not used to really frustrate me and I set about ensuring that I could play an isolated stand-alone copy almost immediately that I got the game. Fortunately Mojang resolved that a while back.
Now Mojang wants to gather information about my playing habits and will sample the state of my game every few minutes. I'm sorry, whether the information is identifiable or not, that's spyware.
I really object to programs of any sort that harvest data from my machine and which check on my gaming habits. As far as possible I have my machine locked down and I avoid adware programs and online verification DRM wherever possible. If Mojang does not provide an opt-out option for this "feature" (and I know that it has been spoken about, so here's hoping) then all my Minecrafting in future, unless I want to download updates, will be done in offline mode and any recommendation I give to people about trying MC will come with the caveat that it is spyware and they should bear this in mind when deciding whether to get it or not.
Frankly, I'm surprised that such a sceptical community as this one - a community where almost every story of what someone has done in MC gets met with a "pics or it didn't happen" post or where any time someone makes a file available to download a people, refuse to download it until someone verifies that it isn't a virus - is happily saying to a remote software company, "sure, you can gather data from my machine as I play".
Well, this is true, but spyware or not the only thing they want is to know what their players do *only* in their game. And notch already said he might add a button to turn it off.
However, when it gets added if someone proves that it gives info of stuff that is not related to minecraft to mojang then everyone should hate on this idea.
But i like it, no, i dont like people knowing what i do, but if notch says it will improve MINECRAFT, which is the favourite game of a lot of people, then i and a lot of people will agree that the information he is requesting is useful for the game development.

Porn. Oh so much porn. More porn than the whole of the internet. And Mojang is out to steal it all. They are the porn terrorists of the world, sending it into apocalyptic chaos, bringing the United States to its knees! And through Minecraft is how they will do it!
Here is a reality check: google has kept track of every single thing you have ever searched, and they keep track of the ip and email address that searched it. Now does mojangs idea seem all that bad?
Google's caching isn't even my biggest concern. ISP snooping is. ISP's don't even bother to refuse government requests for data. Right to privacy? A trial court judge somewhere took it away and no one in charge has told the judges to uphold the constitution.
You know, I don't see the problem. It is confidential information and won't be leaked; You personal, private information won't be sent and it will help Mojang by knowing which area of Minecraft to improve. What's wrong with that?
Some of you are thinking too much, in my opinion. Besides, even if Mojang had the intention of scanning your private data, we can't prove that they will do that with the 'proof' that we have.
First: I voted yes.
Second: How do you know the validity of what you just claimed?
* It is confidential information and won't be leaked
False. Courts in the US have erroneously ruled that you have no expectation of privacy online. Not just as a default, but as an absolute, so even if a company claims to keep your data private, the courts say you actually do not expect it to be private. So suddenly any government agency can take the information. And while any single item is "harmless", database joins make big pictures of what you do very very possible.
* even if Mojang had the intention of scanning your private data, we can't prove that they will do that with the 'proof' that we have.
Pointless. Unless/until this comes out, no one can tell what Mojang will do.
I give them the benefit of the doubt. They get one chance. Just one.
I continue to bash Sony, Inc., every chance I get for their "Root kit" fiasco. Sony music released CD's that, when placed into a Microsoft Windows system to play, would install a CD-rom driver that replaced the system's CD rom driver, forced audio disks to get errors, and would actually cause windows to try to slow down the CD rom drive to prevent errors. But with no error checking, this would continue until the drive was forced down to 1x speed -- and some drives actually failed when they were forced down that slow. As in the drive itself broke.
Not only did Sony Music do that -- the real problem was that Sony (the main head corporation) at first refused to acknowlege the issue, then did not release any sort of removal tool, did not offer any sort of replacement for the CD's, did not do any sort of recall. Nothing to tell people about this. The bad CD's were still made and distributed after this came out -- I don't think they have ever been remastered to this day.
I will never pay a dime for anything from Sony. And that means I refuse to use Blue Ray. Sony has demonstrated that they don't care if they mess up your system.

Would you really rather have bees that make diamonds and oil with magical genetic blocks?
... did I really ask that?
Feels like the whole world is coming to this, privacy is just an illusion now.
Privacy was always an illusion, even before civilization. At any given time some wild animal or another human could come into your home and do whatever it wanted unless you stopped it.
Not to sound like a 'Mojang defending white knight' (as though defending a company you like and stating an opinion was a bad thing), but I like to think they've earned my trust at the very least. If it makes them aware of various performance issues and leads to better game play, then they can have as much data as they want. There's bigger battles to fight on the internet then worrying about a game company knowing the specs of your computer (which many on this forum appear to have no problem posting in topics anyway).
:dry.gif:
Just think about it a bit more.
Make is Intel.
Model is Pentium 4.
Unique ID is a string of random things.
Unique ID is not the make/model.
And no, he didn't say that he would be getting the unique ID. He said it would be anonymous.
There is no indication whatsoever that he is interested in any information other than how people use the game.
Let's just ban all businesses from making a profit. Every business is hereby a non-profit. Let's see how well that works.

I doubt they'll get THAT much information...
Now everyone shut the hell up. It's this simple.
Yeah...tried that didnt work now they think that Notch is tricking us into thinking there is going to be a turn off button

Not that i completely disagree with the OP... but do you really need privacy when punching wood?
GOD MOM!! get out, im trying to kill zombies! No privacy in this house, f*ck.
Also, to the OP : Even if notch god info like our OS, if we are playing it on the website or downloable version, if we are using mods or not, etc.
EVEN if he got info like what websites we use what would he do with that that could damage us.
Even if he had the abbility to get passwords of other sutff of ours ( WHICH HE ISNT and will never be ) what would he do?
He would log in to our e-mails and chat to our friends being inmature and stuff... ?
Sorry, but explain me, what " damage " could he do with the information he is asking ( just the way we play ).
If we like something, he would tell jeb or jon and they would improve it, or he would improve it by himself.
But well, to make everyone happy he should make it an ON - OFF button.
Somalia. Because it puts the ARRRR in anarchy! DOHOHOHOHOHOHOHOOH.

That is why I used to use Tor. That is why I switched to all encrypted searches. This is why there is "Google Sharing".
And that is why I will eventually give Tor another try; it's been two years and I know they've made big improvements. It was too slow before.
