As it stands, people seem to want Minecraft to repeatedly send information about what YOU are doing in their game. While this leads to possibly them focusing more on certain areas of the game, this just feels bad. This is the same sort of thing that Steam and Origins, and other systems use to gather information about people playing the game. I understand that the intention is to make the game better, but it opens up other things, like an additional level of a DRM beyond just signing in (only alternative if you don't want a constant watermark in the game). I supported Notch back in Alpha, was willing to speak out in favor of his vision, but this is just going too far. Improving the game should be about THE GAME, not recording information about the people playing the game, and maybe later what other things that person plays, what websites they visit, and other stuff that is equally valuable to 'development' and can easily be adjusted in the EULA to be unnoticed by most. If this is the future, it is a bad one. This sort of reporting-home is one of the reasons why people are dubious of Steam and Origins and Google. This sort of thing won't make the game better, but only make it more centered around those who don't end up using a cracked .exe just so they aren't constantly sending information back over the web about their play style.
The damage which can be caused because of this is not worth the benefit.
If Mojang want to know how we play the game, you can simply leave a poll for fans of the game to report their habits and usage. As this is largely quantitative feedback, instead of feedback about the game in general, it is not open to a significant level of bias based on users intentionally participating. At the very least, make this Opt-In, without any sort of dubious incentive program to lure in the unwary. Forcing this sort of reporting on all users is not what we agreed to when we bought the game, and supported the company which was built. I did not buy Minecraft back in Alpha to see another EA take root.
Oh no! I punched a sheep without Sheers! NOTCH IS GOING TO KNOW! Wait, *reads notch's tumblr* "Naturally, the data sent will be fully anonymous, so it wouldn’t contain any session information or your user name, and it wouldn’t send any sensitive information that you might not want to share".
Dude what is he going to find out from just data, on how you play minecraft? This might help grow the game! Make minecraft better!
As well you CANNOT, create a poll on how people play minecraft. There would be WAY TOO MANY variables and options.
What "damage" is caused by Mojang having stats on how long people are playing the game? It won't be personally identifiable, and i don't know why you sem to think it "opens up other things, like an additional level of a DRM beyond just signing in".
Time to take off the tin-foil hat friend...
Make and model of PC IS personally identifiable since every processor since Pentium (regardless of maker) has had a unique ID associated with it, same with IP. And some sort of identification for the data would be necessary for the sake of preventing someone from just connecting and disconnecting a few thousand times just to inflate data for some part of the game which isn't as popular and may be getting neglected (SSP). Just because it doesn't report back as being connected to "Robert Smith of Greensboro Connecticut, 2nd child of Mary Stevens and John Smith" or similar does not mean that it isn't personally identifying.
Regardless, people who do not have constant internet connections or who have limited bandwidth should not be forced to have to constantly transmit data back home when playing a SINGLE PLAYER game, or forced to opt-out every time the game updates or they have to reinstall. It is this sort of behavior which is killing PC gaming.
Also ", not recording information about the people playing the game, and maybe later what other things that person plays, what websites they visit, and other stuff that is equally valuable to 'development' and can easily be adjusted in the EULA to be unnoticed by most."
Slippery Slope falacy, I don't see Mojang being interested in those things. And in case you didn't notice, Notch said they would be transparent with the information they collect, if they decide to collect it.

Your IP address could theoretically be logged by the login server as it gives you a token to authenticate with a multiplayer server. Is it logged right now? No. Quoting from notch's tumblr post here:
I also do not want my gameplay experience to be affected by that of others.
Lets just imagine that they can monitor anything, and everyone leaves the top of the big trees. I don't want them to create a tool specifically for that because people are too lazy to pillar up and cut it.
Seriously implying that changes as silly as that would occur as a direct result of this is ridiculous. Let's be realistic here. Also: Minecraft modding is a wonderful thing. Mods could and would be created if silly changes like that happened. In fact, if those silly changes ever happen, I will personally make those mods as well.

Two words. EA Games.
Started out as just a tool to update your game every now and then. Ended up as Origins, a system that scans your entire computer and reports metadata back to EA to share with their 'partners' and anyone they want. Yes, sure, researching saved Skype conversations may be important metadata for some of the products and may be something that could potentially help their game or improve their horrible marketing... But they have no business even looking at that information. Personally identifying or not unless I specifically grant that permission and am aware of it.
You can 'hope' that Mojang is better, but we really don't know. Mojang itself has changed quite a bit from its early days. All it takes is some asshat of a CEO to screw everything up.
Relying on "mods to fix it" doesn't solve the initial problem. As this is something which would be part of the .exe, changing it or similar would likely be illegal.

Sure it does, because it would be in minecraft.jar. If you haven't noticed, all the .exe does is simply launch an embedded launcher.jar, which can be even more easily modded than minecraft.jar.

I'm actually suprised he even thought of doing this. I wouldn't mind filling a form in with information of what I do with the game, and how I play it. But sending data against my wishes? That's wrong.
Notch on Twitter: "I'd rather not have it be an opt-in option, as most casual users would not activate it. But letting people turn it off, sure!"

yeah plus doing that would be illegal. and all the data is anonymous so it can help them develop stuff more to see what people enjoy the most and see what needs improveing to be made more fun.

You're upset because they jolt down your system & client information? Your Windows does it, but you still use it. Mojang has every right to do so, don't complain over petty **** with all honesty. If it's a privacy thing, hop off the internet.
Information was sent that I like to create penis statues with cobblestone. OH GOD NOW NOTCH AKA THE WHOLE WORLD WILL THINK I'M GAY. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF.

Agreed.
Notch actually wrote down that they will not send any private info at all and people are still sceptical
If they do this I imagine there will be a ingame window where people will be able to see other peoples stats, share world pictures, have a friends list maybe ever cloud computing (I am may have gone too far with that last thing)

Currently being decided as an Opt-Out.

Should be an Opt-In.

Even if that doesn't happen, there would most definitely be a mod created to prevent data-sending from occurring.
