The nerf has not effected my enchanting at all.
The vast majority of my enchants have been on pickaxes, which are not effected by this change.
I put level 1-5 enchants on all armor (even leather and iron) because even rank 1 in any type of protection is a big upgrade for 1 level worth of xp. And it takes all on 3mins to hit level 5 even in the wild.
In fact I put level 1-5 enchants on all cobble swords, cobble pickaxes, bows (as well as high level enchants), leather/iron armor, and even the occasional diamond tool/weapon. The only items I would ever (even before nerf) put a high level enchant on was the diamond pickaxe and very rarely a diamond sword.
I think after The Great Nerf of Minecraft, enchants don't have much use beyond a little PvP. I never have to even bother with diamond armor, iron is more than sufficient. I can get smacked around by baddies for a long time before I ever start to suffer any real damage. And with hunger regenerating health at such a fast rate, there seems to be no real danger of dying. Which brings me to enchants. I love them. But what's the point? I've never actually needed to enchant anything. It would be nice to actually have a need for such things.
Notch added Hardcore mode, implement it instead of posting useless threads.

Do you even realize what hardcore mode is?
If you die, you can't respawn. That's it.
If the armor is broken and overpowered, you can live without a fear of dying in the first place...
People need to realize that having one life is the ONLY thing unique to Hardcore mode.
The values for defense are:
cloth: 5
iron: 15
gold: forgot
diamond: 33
