There is a mod that is able to do that, but I'd like it to be added in vanilla minecraft. Could be under more world options: Terrain (Normal/Classic). I did also suggest sometime, that an alpha-biome would be nice. It would act as some kind of neutral biome in the new generator and satisfy everyone who wants simple, old and awesome terrain. It's unlikely that it will be added, though :/
Edit: Instead of adding alpha terrain, they could make it possible to choose which biomes you want to have in your world and make it possible to import custom biomes into minecraft, or even an editor to create new biomes. I think I mentioned this somewhere else already... I'm pretty sure something like that would satisfy a lot of people who want improvements or changes to the terrain generation.
that's a bit much, how about
World Options
Normal
Super Flat
Classic
Hybrid

What if this gets added they will start posting on the forums " See, alpha was so so so so cool it was re-added to the game, that is why i say my **** is so big becuase and only because i joined in alpha and not in beta like you noobs, that is why i think everything post-alpha shoul dbe removed to increase the **** size of every alpha user. "
They would take as another excuse of why alpha is much " better " than the current minecraft.
Wow.. A classic case of Alpha-Envy if ever I've seen one. :tongue.gif:
Would be good to have too. This could perhaps be based on b1.7.3 as that's the version of the Terrain Generator that a lot of the famous seed names are known from. It's also pretty much the epitome of the beta series before the huge departure that b1.8 took feature-wise. It would be easy enough to do and that code would never need to be updated again so there would be no more effort to put into it once added.
Aside from that I would also like a "Skylands" option.
Skylands
--------------------------------------
Actually it just dawned on me. Classic & Beta under [World Options] would already be "Hybrid" as they would just be the terrain from old version combined with the new engine.
[Game Mode]
Classic
Beta
Would actually give you both the terrain and features of those versions. I would like to have that available. :smile.gif:

its all very well and good to have an alpha option, but do you really think mojang are going to seriously spend time working backwards on a game? I am not saying its a bad idea, but is it realistic?
[spoiler]
I can't say I have ever looked at the code of game in any of its versions, but I expect what it is now is a long way from alpha, most of the original code has probably been replaced with newer code etc. Minecraft as a game needs to look forward, and if you want to look backward, they(mojang) are far more likely to say go play alpha then, rather than invest time and money into making the game backwards compatible for some/all versions because you feel nostalgic about the earlier versions of the games. If I was mojang i wouldn't have making an alpha button on my agenda, I would leave that to the modders. I think the single most important/useful new feature in this game will be the mod API, then you will more likely see this alpha option appear as a mod.
I see a lot of arguements about using older versions and others countering with mods wont work etc etc. I think thats going to always be the case when a game like minecraft has been as open to the public with its game development progression allowing mods to be used throughout its lifecycle.
Seems to me the obvious answer is to use the mc nostalgia but many beg to differ.
[spoiler]
The thing with arguments like this is:
I don't see how it would take Mojang any time at all to add a subfolder inside of the minecraft.jar to dump another "classic" version of Minecraft into and link to it in the launcher via their shiny new [Game Mode] option. Aside from a tiny bit of managing the code to work like that it should be a snap.
When adding an option that would make so many people happy is so easy to do, why the hell not do it? Seems more like an Ego decision on someone's part but who knows.

I really think as a company they would rather 'finish' the current game than bother to do this.
what you are suggesting isnt a alpha button its a link to the alpha game. I thought the point of the option was to have the current game mechanics with alpha style terrain generation, or all mods will break too.
Then I understand what you are saying even less. It would be even easier yet to just add yet another Terrain Generator. They already have 3 in 1.1 and will have n=n+1 for every new version that has a new Terrain Generator in it due to Jeb trying to keep new versions compatible with old v1.0.0+ versions.
That would take no time or effort at all.
And I thought notch said he had already "finished" the game with v1.0? :wink.gif: Everything after v1.0 is just gravy right? And this would be exactly the sort of After-Done Gravy loyal customers could hope for.
* And regarding the [Game Mode] option with another game version in a sub-folder: What mods would break? The mods designed for the normal game modes should still work fine. The current mods wouldn't even access the "Classic" folder, though newer ones after that could. You might even be able to add old mods to the Classic version in the sub-folder so long as they are for that specific version.

It's a good idea but the world option should NOT be named "Alpha". It's like having a website and at the bottom it has an option for an older version of it. It's not that it doesn't make sense, it's just that it's not very appropriate.
Another idea would be to add the "Alpha/Classic Biome" into the mix. Which would be exactly what it says, a biome that generates alpha-like terrain (a few scattered small trees, variable hills and bright green grass) That way people who like the alpha generation could live in an alpha biome, but still venture out into the others, when they wanted some of the newer features
Extra Biomes mod did something to this effect.

When no one was looking, the Endermen took forty blocks.
They took 40 blocks. That’s as many as four tens. And that’s horrible.
that would be too official, it would be cooler if you could just write alhpa inside the seed thingie, and then you could write an alpha seed :wink.gif:
Why the hell not? If this will cause people to shut the f*ck up, I'm all for it.
