I posted this clip in a thread where it actually made sense, and earned like 100 rep. Good times.
In any case, this is what this thread sounds like to me:
"Minecraft is nothing like Minecraft anymore. Ever since that one patch in the beta stage of development, it just hasn't been the same." "Yeah, but how do we make Minecraft feel more like Minecraft?" "I know! We'll develop an unofficial mod with zero Java experience, and forcefully implement it into the game!" "Good idea! That will certainly make Minecraft feel more like Minecraft!"
So you're complaining about things that have happened before 1.8? Yes, the Nether had a lot of potential and it kinda got messed up. But why, after 1.8 is it even worse? Why is adding new features that arent completely solid bad? And do little circles of clay dirt and sand at the bottom of the ocean really bother you?
A lot of people are just uncomfortable with minecraft moving forward, and exploring new ideas, and then minecraft becomes less of their idea of "minecraft". Minecraft had no solid genre in the beggining, it was very generic, and people decided what kind of game they thought it was. But minecraft cant stay simple forever, it has to move forward, and it can't develop into every genre of game, so it went with more so Rpgish. This put more of a label on minecraft, but for the better, it couldn't just remain a generic game forever, it had to chose a path.
I just think you have a case of minecraft nostalgia.
If we're talking about this intuitively, I would say 1.8 and after it started steering towards its ultimate goal, a fantasy game. Before that it was a building/regular fighting simple game. I really don't care what direction it goes, as long as they follow through with their promises, a hand full of which have been forgotten by them seemingly.
I don't understand what you mean by the 'old minecraft feel'. Lets see...I start in a nigh-barren wasteland covered in grass and trees, evil shrub monsters want to blow me up, I still want to utilize the landscape to make awesome castles and monuments...yep, same game. Everything else is just side stuff that's easily ignored. No one is forcing you to go to the End or enchant items, so what's the issue? Or are you just upset that Jeb's not focusing on the things you want to see?
Yes, I left it behind when Jeb became the main developer
really? Why would you do that? In case you hadnt noticed Notch wasn'nt getting very much done. He was looking for any excuse to stop working on the game. He also admitted it several times, that he was bored of developing minecraft. Jeb, however is a very qualified for this position. He's a good developer, and worked with Notch a lot in the earlier stages of minecraft, so he knows how to develop the game. And in case you haven't noticed Jeb is churning out more material in a week then Notch had in several weeks.
Minecraft still feels like minecraft... most of the things you suggested make me think you need to go play Terraria.
The only change that has a major impact on the feel of the game is the hunger system. so basically you don't like having to eat to keep your strength up so the game isn't the same. Combat changed to but most of it doesn't impact you directly, you can still use your sword on mobs, but get an added bonus for jumping or sprinting. Bows are much MUCH better now that you can charge them for more power. If you don't like that you cannot spam them anymore well that's tough.
Adding the aether to the game would not make it feel more minecraft. The aether wasn't done very well and basically makes anything but the aether useless once you get there. There is no reason to go back to the over world, all tools are better then anything you can get down below. The nether doesn't make the over world useless but it does do exactly what it intended. It adds the ability for quick travel, sure there should be a little more nether content though. The fortresses and new mobs were a step in the right direction but there should be a little more danger. Some ore that's worth finding other then glow stone and we need a way to forge nether brick and craft nether brick half slabs
Jeb does need to spend some time on a few of the games features are not finished.
The mapping feature doesn't have the ability to choose map scale nor the ability to duplicate maps. We also need a way to mark locations on the maps.
A boat with storage capacity would be nice
Powered minecarts need the ability to link carts into trains and control the speed and direction while sitting in it. These should have the potential to travel faster then just powered rails over large distances.
Books need the ability to write in them, and perhaps a bulletin board for when signs are to limited.
Trap doors need the ability to place top and bottom as well as an added iron version.

Playing Minecraft since [Friday, March 19, 2010, 9:20:21 PM] (First indev world save)
Minecraft is awesome. It is one of the most fun, long-lasting, awesome games you can play. But ever since the 1.8 updates, the features aren't really like they should be. The new generator is good in that biomes can have unique geography, but the underwater geology is ridiculous - random irregular circles of clay, sand, and dirt. Also, some of the new features have been added in a very, VERY unfinished state, and they've basically been abandoned and left as they are while more features are made.
I don't know what's going on, but this isn't really the way Minecraft is supposed to be.
Nope. For me, it only stops being Minecraft when you have millions of game changing mods like Millenaire and RPG mods installed.
This.
Minecraft is always Minecraft. This idiotic meme that "it's not Minecraft anymore" is like this:
Person 1: "Hey, Jimmy isn't Jimmy anymore because he cut his hair and wears different clothes and listens to music we don't."
Person 2: "But he's Jimmy..he makes us laugh with his jokes and makes those awesome sandwhiches!"
Person 1: "No he's not! He's not Jimmy anymore!!"
Let's shift to Minecraft:
Person 1: "Minecraft isn't Minecraft anymore! There's an End and magical crafting and snow golems and wierd looking npcs and jungle cats and dogs!! D:< "
Person 2: "Uh..but we're still fighting creepers, digging and building stuff since the dawn of Mine-time.."
Person 1: "IT'S NOT MINECRAFT ANYMORE!!"
Seriously...do any of you get it through your thick, metal plated skulls Minecraft is constantly changing and evolving? Do any of you realize you're complaining about extra things to do in the game? Do any of you find how hypocritical you are when you complain Minecraft is boring, install a MOD to "fix it", then complain that Minecraft is not Minecraft when it adds **** so that it's not "boring"?
HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN THAT YOU'RE STILL CRAFTING AND MINING...IN "MINE" "CRAFT"?!
You wana REALLY know when Minecraft isn't Minecraft anymore?
When you stop MINE-ing and CRAFT-ing altogether....guess what isn't gona change anytime soon?
The idea of minecraft is that it is a sandbox game which you can do whatever you want just becasue the devs add stuff doesn't take away from this idea, hell it adds to it.
Don't like it? well too bad either you stop complaining or stop playing nobody forced you to buy it nobody is forceing you to play it.
Okay, this started off with some good points, but has kinda turned into mostly a flamewar.
Sure, I can restore a backup, but my friend Captainireland agrees with me - sometimes we'd like certain things to be like they used to be. Sure, we could restore from a backup, but either we don't have a backup, are too lazy to install it, or we want to play seriously, as in a public server. Sure, we're not forced to enchant things, but the new generator isn't really my thing and it just kinda bothers me that all of these features were never completed, and they're pretty much untouched since they were first added in their current state. I know they'll get to it eventually, but sometimes they need to spend a little less time on new features and a bit more time on bugfixing/updating old features.
It doesn't feel like Minecraft anymore because nearly all of the changes in the last year have moved away from the mine-and-build aspect of the game. Instead, the changes have basically been rip-offs of Elder Scrolls games. Minecraft is getting to the point where it's just a really bad copy of Skyrim

What's funny is,
nobody would compare Minecraft and Skyrim, if Mojang hadn't gotten into that legal dispute.

Actually i would of, but mainly i would aim it at all the elder scroll games but i think it was elder scrolls arena i cant remember, but that was kinda like minecraft, endless terrain, bag graphics pretty much minecraft with out digging... Then you look at the whole theme for skyrim and all the crap you can do in that...

I would. Because even without the legal dispute, one can draw plenty of parallels.
Open world, no requirement to play the "story", freedom to do whatever the hell you want, very moddable, thriving community... not to mention the "final boss" for both games is a (laughably easy to kill) giant black dragon fought in a strange alternate dimension.
Back on topic, though, I have gotten the "this isn't the same game anymore" feeling before. I had it as recently as update 1.0, as a matter of fact.
Nothing but praise for 1.1, though, it feels like a return to form in my opinion.
same.I love minecraft as it is right now.I have liked every new feature jeb and notch have added.
Jeb listens to the community and adds new good features.I can not understand why people make these "complaining threads"
minecraft is good as it is right now.
nuff said.
So... you're against mods that add features that don't fit your view of Minecraft, yet you're all for official content that adds effectively the same thing?
Because that's what a large portion of the 1.8-1.0 content has been. We've gotten villages full of NPCs, abandoned ruins, magic potions, enchanted weaponry, even a portal to a classic fantasy RPG final boss.
Note: I'm not against any of these things, but the logic of "Millenaire and RPG mods ruin minecraft, but the official content doing effectively the same thing is A-OK" really confuses me.
