it's not a backstory for the player it's a backstory for the world. keeps what you want to do pretty open if you ask me and gives you a reason to survive and steve not to just kill himself under the pressure of mobs
That is exactly the kind of crap I was talking about. Backstory for the world is still backstory, and will ruin the imagination factor in Minecraft.

how? your still in a blocky world with a sun and a moon. and i fail to see what kind of imagination feature would be ruined by giveing a reason to go to the end or how mineshafts were made. only wondering what happened would be gone.
and the bigest backstory the player base comes up with is about the player and giveing backstory to structures would still allow people to do that.
Maybe it doesn't even have to be lore, just strange stories or weird glyphs that have no meaning.
whatever it is their should be at least 1 reason to travel to the end. thats the main thing is you dont have much purpose in the world right now besides survive and while the game should still be focused on surviveing their should be reasons to do other stuff as well, give people a reason to change their daily survival routine.
in fact the books in the stronghold could even be a reason to go their just at the thought of finding out about their origin.
villages i would say dont need as much of a backstory like how it got founded, but finding some funny stuff of what happens to them and maby stories they know of would be enough. something as basic as that i would be okey with

That "reason to go to the end" or "how mineshafts were made", if added by Mojang, will never be as good as what the player though up, because that was what they imagined.

minecraft main focus isnt even about story or coming up with your own
its about building, surviveing, haveing fun with freinds and taking on a challenge. makeing fiction wont take away from any of those
Lore would bring an atmosphere not yet given in minecraft today. I t would let the testificates be able to give info. It may even open the window to movieclips and quests. Maybe lore boks with powers to take you back i time to wars, journeys and maybe even extinct mobs.
It could tel of mob origins give you reason to do stuff like find a jungle and maybe evn give clues to where stuff is i.e. strongholds mines dungeons and treasure.
This is why lore would be good for minecraft
I don't. I gave my argument on why I think it's a bad idea - players won't be able to imagine their own story, even if it's not the game's main focus.
But you only said "it's a good idea". Please give me an argument, and I'll accept it.
I truly see no issues with some lore that explains a bit, not all, of the history of the world.
It doesn't have to be an exact history, but maybe something like old diaries from long-gone testificates, myths explaining how the world came to be (note the word myths) or even small histories that explain game features, like portal building, indirectly.
I'd really love to be able to write in books. It'd be useful in many things; and can be fun too. You can make a guide for your server, you can leave books in chests to see the other players reactions, put potion recipes, notes and much more. :tongue.gif:

ummmm.... you do know this is a planned feature jeb is working on right? thats why we are talking about possible lore

This is a fantasy rpg sandbox not a plain sandbox.
ok A how do you know it could have just been an unsung war
B as long as jeb dosent go overboard with backstory he would still leave the origin of the universe untouched
and C i've been saying this entire thread the backstory wouldnt releate to steve
Just like doctor mentioned about treasure coord., maybe that's how we could get the 11 disk.
oh sorry i read your post wrong. my bad :biggrin.gif:

So facepalm worthy I won't even bother replying.

You have yet to present a decent, logical argument on this thread. Go on. I'm waiting.
