While the new weekly snapshots are amazing and all (the jungle update being incredibly amazing), I find myself dreading every new one more and more (hear me out here, then you can bash me for all I deserve) for the following reason:
1.As someone who enjoys building complex structures in creative move and then switching to to survival to experience the amazing new content, I find it incredibly difficult to delete my worlds and start over. (While some updates do not necessitate this, major ones do, like revamped biome generation, jungles, and desert wells.)
1.a. Now, I realize it is possible to use worldedit to preserve creations and transfer them to different level files (which initself is no easy task), but sometimes they're built right into the landscape, and placing them somewhere else would be non-sensical.
1.b. In addition, those of you who have built massive structures will know the painstaking process of landscaping the surrounding area, so that whatever you built isn't surrounded by sheer cliffs (or ocean).
1.b.i. Also (sorry if I'm rambling), if the structure is large enough, it can be a pain in the ass to find a flat-ish biome that is large enough to accompany the creation. I can't speak for the rest of you, but when it's snowing on one side of my airport, and raining on the other, I get pretty ticked off.
Whew! Thanks for letting me add my two cents. What do you guys think of these weekly snapshots?
That's why they release snapshots separate to release. So you don't have to start a new world every week. You can just keep playing release versions and only have to worry about all that every few months.
I don't actually play the updates, I check out the new features and then go back to whatever world I was playing earlier.
Currently, I am doing an extra biomes mod world and don't foresee starting a new world until the next major update occurs. (and maybe even not then.)
I also, have a map I've had since 1.9 that I keep going back to. It really isn't affected by new updates as it is pretty much all ocean anyways. Although, I have deleted portions of the world in MCEdit at one point to get update strongholds with nether portals.

When no one was looking, the Endermen took forty blocks.
They took 40 blocks. That’s as many as four tens. And that’s horrible.

I actually have no choice, because my main map is on a locally hosted bukkit server (don't ask me why, I cannot say), and they don't usually update bukkit for snapshots, so I'm stuck waiting for releases.
On a side note, the fact that some people are forced to play an inferior version, but stop playing and simply wait for a new release, can't be good for the community as a whole.
I would suggest to use a mod like single player commands to switch yourself to Creative and then let yourself go over into Survival on the same world. That's the best solution I can think of, I do it all the time when I make stuff ^^
But in all honesty the snapshots are voluntary, and we may not need to make a new world to get new content when 1.2 arrives.

Ahhhh, I remember when they were complaining about never getting any updates, and now they're complaining about always getting updates...
Too bad it's never the same people doing both. So it's still a very trite and simplistic generalization about the general discussions on this forum.
You didn't even try to address his point at all. I've stuck up for the fact that worlds have to be redone over and over.. but I'm getting sick of it too. Once it got out of beta, it seemed likely that world gen would finally be somewhat locked down. But apparently it will never be.. which is frustrating for some people.
Actually not how it works anymore. As stated by jeb, without editing your files, no new biomes are generated in old maps. He did this, to avoid sharp edges between old and new chunks, as the new code for biome generation cant fit the old chunks with the new chunks correctly.
I'd very much like him to solve this problem. To start a new map with a major release might be okay, but 1.2 is no major release and even if, if it comes out in like april or may we had not even half a year from the 1.0.
Why the hack do we have worlds larger than earth when we have to make new ones all the time to be able to have all the features? As long as we were in Beta, I would have said nothing, but they said we are not anymore.
Would be like MMOs like WoW or SW:Tor would give new content (like raids or stuff) and you can still play with your old characters (but without new content) or forced to make a new char to have access to the new stuff.
Minecraft is about building stuff and showing it of. I even only host a server for about a dozen people, I can't imagine what players say on servers where hundreds of people have built and are forced into a new world.
I'm really upset here if the official releases still don't have the new features in old (like 1.0) maps even though I understand why jeb did it the way he did.
Please don't say: Just edit or use program xy. Those are not official tools and I actually expect Mojang to solve this issue. I also wouldn't change something in my car if it doesn't work properly, even though I might be able to.
Not entirely true. I got jungles in the world generated during Alpha 1.2.6.
One way or another, if the new codes in the game do keep you from getting the new terrain then follow SupaSoaka's new directions on how to alter your world files with NBTEdit to enable the new terrain:
I am both impressed, and dissapointed in Jebs tactics.
Like a good developer, he's working hard, and providing us with content that we can try. But when he's doing this I sometimes think he's trying a bit too hard to earn too much public support. To keep us interested, he's releasing updates rapidly to keep fans excited. This does interest many people, but it also frustrates them. I think Jeb needs to find the balance of when to release updates, and how large they should be.

no, biome updates do require a new world.

How to enable new version Terrain Generation on old Worlds
- The Cubic Chunks Mod is back! Be a part of it's rebirth and Development.
-- Robinton's Mods: [ Mirror ] for some of his Mods incl Cubic Chunks Mod, due to DropBox broken links.
- Dungeon Generator for the Open Cubic Chunks Mod
- QuickSAVE-QuickLOAD for the Open Cubic Chunks Mod
keeping in mind that pre-releases optional.
