I thought creepers couldn't jump a one block gap that's why I build moats around my base so that they fall in. I have a fence around the top on the inside and first a zombie jumped it and then a creeper jumped onto the narrow ledge left by the fence not having a full block collision mask. Have now made my moat 2x blocks wide (after cleaning up the enormous hole made by Mr Creeper)
It might be the new AI (if you're using the latest snapshot.) Creepers have always been able to jump up blocks to pursue players, but they've never been smart enough to time their jumps to cross gaps until now.
Is the 2 block gap good enough to stop them? I can pull off 2 block jumps without sprinting and mobs might be able to do the same given enough attempts.

Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.
There's also the element of chance. It could be that the creeper just happened to jump at the right time and cleared the gap.
I've seen them jump from higher ledges over things to get to people. I don't think it's that they are learning (right HAL?), but just dumb luck. Or bad luck as the case may be.

I'm not using the snapshot and will run some tests. It has happened twice, once with a zombie and once with a creeper so I am inclined to think it is a combination of the moat trench and fence. Will report back after some testing.

Definitely able to duplicate creeper behaviour. Not setting them off is a trick as they don't seem to defuse as they used to - or maybe the distance for defusion has increased?

This is a comment, and yes it is quite empty

I'll post a screen shot when I get one that shows it clearly. I have taken screen shots but they don't show it clear enough.
Edit: More testing and it seems that in a World I made recently this doesn't happen. I'm playing an older map and that may have caused the glitch.
