From looking at the server code Mojang is still doing a shitty job overall! The network code sucks, package management is horrible! On the pro side the memory usage has become better.
Still I want at least the server performance of < 1.7 back.
With Spout coming out soon, we won't really have to worry about how poorly the SMP side of Minecraft is coded.
Though to the point of the thread, I think Notch just lost inspiration and the willpower to produce quality content, so he's taking a break, you guys can't forget Notch made this game, back in Alpha we didn't have the same problems Notch was producing at the end of beta because Notch cared about the game, he wasn't burnt out on it like he is now. But he did the right thing by letting another good developer take over for awhile.
Jeb hasn't really had a chance to make mistakes yet, Jebs only been doing bug fixes and building on things Notch already did, not saying Jeb can't handle it, but he hasn't been put under the same pressure Notch has.
Regardless they're both great programmers and developers in general.
By the way, I always digged Jeb's work on the game. Look forward to any potential huge updates comes from him in the future, that's when we'll really see how he handles Minecraft's direction.
If your only priority is to please yourself then you don't have your priorities in line. Does Notch want to sell as many copies of Minecraft as possible or does he want to make a game that's just entirely his ideas? The customer is important in this equation. If Minecraft is to remain profitable, it needs to add content that people actually want and have been asking for.
I disagree with this notion, and you've presumed far too much. Notch has stated before that MC has been designed to meet his dreams and expectations, and only the largest of community waves have budged his opinions. The customer's important lies to whatever degree he allows; he already has millions of dollars and massive support that will continue for at least a couple of years.
Notch will always be the person who created Minecraft. He should be respected for this accomplishment, but we shouldn't praise him for his work after his effort wanes and his performance starts slipping. If you still support what he is doing after he stops trying, then you fit the description of a fanboy. (It's false praise!!!)
I've yet to see anyone say Notch should continued to be praised for his past achievements, but I have seen plenty of people hate on the man just because he didn't adhere to their whims.

Exactly, yes. I believe it's evident that Notch 'burnt out' on Minecraft, as his speed and quality of updates slowly diminished over time, and now he has placed someone else as head developer. You can only look at the same lines of code for so long before you just stop caring as much.
I agree with Notch being burnt out on the game. If he wasn't, why would he stop working on it? He just needs a break, is all.
I'm sensing some kind of misconception that Notch has never been accepting of the community and its feedback. He used to be, actually. You know, before the userbase flew up into the millions and became impossible to keep track of. I don't know if you all know this, but the name Minecraft was decided on by his initial fans, back when they were just a small group of friends. I wasn't around that early on, so I can't say how much was influenced by the players back then, but I know he took feedback about a ton of things, at least checking out if people thought his recent additions were good or bad. He used to be open to suggestion on Twitter for the longest time, too, at least acknowledging every idea that was thrown his way, whether he had any intent of using it or not.
That's impossible now, of course. With a community that's grown to literally millions of times its initial size, the game itself being orders of magnitudes more complex and being worked on by several different people, how could be possibly continue to be that open to feedback on a personal level?
He used to interact with the community. That is the issue. He completely removed himself from the community, took questionable amounts of time off, and tasked Jeb to do practically all of the great things that came with Beta. So Jeb is primarily responsible for the majority of the things that came with Beta. You make great points about Notch's efforts, but the bottom line is it was a bad for his reputation to isolate himself, and not reveal what he was doing with his millions of dollars, because it obviously wasn't being used to improve the game as far as we knew.
Don't forget about all the empty promises he made. What if you decided to buy the game in Beta based on one of the things he said he would add to the game, but didn't. Even when he was responding to the community, he was probably just telling them what they wanted to hear. Not to mention his work ethic was terrible during early Beta.
I don't think you can trust anything that Notch confirms at full value, while Jeb is very careful about what he says about upcoming game features. I can say that Jeb is more trust worthy, and trust is also a very important part of the equation. Can we trust Notch to take the game in new and exciting directions that will actually benefit the experience?
I know that it's his game and my opinion doesn't hold much water, but I care about the future of Minecraft. I want someone who I can trust in a leadership position and right now I don't trust Notch at all. He's been WAY too secretive about his changes to Minecraft, while Jeb and the weekly snapshots have been very revealing of whats to come. I shouldn't be giving Jeb the credit that the snapshots have done, because Notch just happened to leave before they became regular, but it just irks me how all of these events point towards Notch rushing the game just to get away from the game. Rushing the game through full release lost my trust with Notch.
Now to address a point you made about the community getting out of hand. Well it's really not that overwhelming. You can't read everyone's comments, but you certainly can read some of them. Notch spent more time talking about the games he was playing than he did dealing with the community. That is really showing the community that you're hard at work when your main dev blog is never about Minecraft anymore, and you twitter is no longer about Minecraft anymore.
I think the community would be happy with regular reports on what is going to come in Minecraft. We're looking for indications that Minecraft is getting better and that they are listening to us. Notch used to do this, but it completely stopped. Now Minecraft doesn't even have an official development info dump other than twitter. How many games can you think of have a privately run forum?
I truly don't think Notch knows how to run a proper company. I can't say that Jeb knows how to either, but I do know this. Jeb seems to know what the community wants and he sticks to what he says on Twitter. As far as I know he has never said he would add something and then just pushed that idea under the rug without a word of it. So if we're talking about trustworthyness, reliability, and people skills, Jeb has always been better for these qualities.
Hmm... what noteworthy qualities about Notch have we ascertained? I've already covered them earlier in this post.
Notch and Jens make a good team. One's strengths seem to be the other's weakness. Minecraft should have both working on it IMO. Listening to the community can be a bad thing sometimes since a lot of you fear change of any kind and just want lateral expansion.
Mojang did all previous updates, not Notch only.So your hating MOJANG,not Notch.
:\
Up until Beta, it was all Notch. At around early Beta, jeb started getting more involved. Everyone else at Mojang (10 people(!)) was working on other projects.

Users lack the mental capacity to have intelligent discussion, and mods lack the mental capacity to make intellegent decisions... I give up trying to share my intelligence with the world.
Jeb's doing an awesome job at adding things we didn't even know we wanted and responding to the community when we want more of something or don't like what he did, but I almost feel really bad for Notch. As soon as he handed off the position of lead dev of Minecraft, people almost instantly stop complaining about the game when they saw what Jeb was doing.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Random acts of petty fanboyish hatred?
Jeb represents what the minecraft community wants. Notch did not read the forum in his final days.
I don't think jeb reads the forums either :mellow.gif:
There really should be some "idea manager" that forwards all the reasonable ideas on the forums to jeb so he doesn't have to sift through all the crappy "ADd GuNZ pl3as3!!!111!1one!!" threads we get in the suggestions forum.

I made a thread, but there just isn't enough mature people on the Suggestion board to make it work.
I agree 100%
Notch wasn't horrible, he did originally produce games, HOWEVER:
1. Jeb takes requests from the community (Jungles, Spawn eggs, better zombie AI, etc)
2. He fixes peoples concerns ASAP
3. Hes adding multilingual features to minecraft, so all dont have to speak english!
4. Jeb is just all out for it. Which is great!

he adds cool things, and if the people don't like it, he remove it!
Riiight... and you are complaining because Jeb doest fixes the world generation.
I think Jeb is doing things on a good way and i hope he carry on with his good work.

Remember: cannibalism is always an option.
How would you know that?

Should get equal respect, it doesn't matter who's doing a better job or not.
Notch started minecraft.
Jeb is making it better.
