I think that the trade-off is that with vines, they grow everywhere. You either have to be okay with vines growing everywhere, or design your home so that they can't. That, or get ladders and not worry about it.
Plus, ladders aren't that hard to make. For every wood block, you get 2.

Make note: I generally avoid being insulting. If I sound insulting, I'm probably joking.
Ladders are basically free - anything made out of wood is basically free. You can have a tree farm set up within the first few days, and then you'll have more wood than you can possibly use.
In comparison, vines need iron (abundant, but not free), and vines (limited to certain biomes, and AFAIK does not regrow). The only case where vines are easier is if you start out in a swamp or jungle biome with surface iron.
This isn't the first time I've seen a thread with the premise that large quantities of wood are hard to obtain. Everybody does know that you can plant saplings, right?
Ladders are for people who like to stand at the top of the climb, vines are for people who don't like dying when they land on the top of their climb. I prefer ladders, but now at least both sides can be satisfied.

I've been a Minecraft player since Beta 1.7, still my favorite game!

Also. I'm rather curious. Your argument (as it seems) is it basically negates the use of Ladders. Yet... the ease of getting vines is about equal to the ease of getting a ladder? I'd argue a vine is harder even.
Trees grow in what? 80% of biomes? (random number), 1 wood=4 planks. 1 plank=4 sticks. So per wood block that's 16 sticks, enough for 2 ladders from a single block of wood.
Vines require you to be near a jungle or swamp biome, which sometimes, may not be for miles. They also require iron tools (shears) to acquire, while wood takes your bare hand.
So really... I think it's quite balanced.
In the environment wise, I think it's fine to be able to climb trees too. We just block-tower up if we wish to as it is anyways, this just removes that tedium from two Biomes which naturally have vines.
As for mobs climbing them, I'd have to see how buggy they get to argue any point over it. :tongue.gif:
Well ladders are really easy to get, all you need is wood which is exremely easy :/ and you can just plant saplings to get more so its not like its dangerous to get wood or anything
As someone who uses a ladder like a normal person, the hitbox means nothing. Vines or ladders, i'll use whatever is cheaper, in this case, vines.
Again, in what bizarro world are vines cheaper? In a couple minutes of work, using only a stone axe, you can harvest a stack of logs, enough to produce 146 ladders. And then the trees will regrow.
Now sure, vines also regrow, but a farm big enough to produce that many vines in one pass would take up a lot more room than an equivalent tree farm.

Ladders are still pretty expensive, why waste the sticks when I could make more tools instead? The 2 iron is not really much.

Because you have unlimited sticks? Serious question - do you replant trees when you cut them down? Have you tried planting trees inside your base for easy harvesting?
Don't get me wrong, vines have their purposes:
* Drop-shaft brakes
* Aesthetically different than ladders
* Good for sideways jumping
Yes it is a good idea,
no I do not feel that it should be changed.
Vines grow slower than you think, and who really wants vines for aesthetic reasons in a home?

Do you use a pickaxe in real life? Don't think so.
I think you have created a new meme! :laugh.gif:

and I thought the "giant mushrooms are overpowered" topic was silly.
mind = blown.

But being cheaper is not really one of them.
