It seems silk touch is just as difficult to get as previous versions..
I'm making a museum of every block in ssp and decided to go on my journey to getting silk touch.
I go and slay the dragon, get 2 diamond picks and enchant them level 44 and 42. I get the regular efficiencies and unbreaking with a fortune. Nice, but not what I want, not to mention I've spent 30-35 levels on 7 picks in my last world and didn't get it.
I decided to start enchanting golden picks since they get better enchants. I brew up a storm of speed+strength pots and fight in deserts and the end. I spend 30 levels then 33 on the picks and still got efficiency/unbreaking.
I decided to try and get to 40+ since it wasn't working but it was a long ride because I wanted to do it legit w/o deleting the Dim1 folder and getting tons of free levels. I get to 39 but happen to die, come back, and there's no exp there..
I'll just forget about silk touch, it's not worth my time..

Really, silk touch doesnt worths it at all IMHO since they removed the effects on ice n spawners. I never spend more than 25 levels on something, all i need is a minimum efficiency and unbreaking II and fortune I and im happy with that. Now i dont even need a full setup of bookcases too making things faster and easier for me. For weapons ill stick with maybe some sharpness, looting and fire aspect, IDK, i dont really enchant weapons much and armor NEVER.
WHenever its possible id say Jeb should take a look at enchanting again cuz after all the high lvl enchats doesnt really worths it and the armor enchants is not that good, at least IMHO
Sometimes when you die items are invisible.Same for XP.
Silk touch is easy to get for me,since Mojang made the enchanting table give higher levels and better
enchantments.
Idk, I've always got an enchant within spending 420 levels on it, but not silk touch. I've had it once but it was 45 levels from killing the dragon. I have a pile of like 7 diamond picks in every world I have because I can't get the damn enchantment.

I'm okay with all other enchants. The reason I have a problem with silk touch is that it doesn't benefit you much except in aesthetics. It should be a level 10 enchant for christ sakes. :/
Jeb does need to revamp enchanting. That galactic alphabet needs to mean something.

I agree, Silk touch has no other limited use than aesthetics. And i say limited because some uses are questionables, like getting glass and bookshelves back... IDK.
The text on the enchanting teable should mean something reflecting the enchants you might get.
The lack of ice really kills it. That's like the one block that you might legitimately want to reposition (there's grass too, but getting Silk Touch generally takes a lot longer than building a pathway for it). And it was removed, not for any technical reason, but because putting ice in the Nether was apparently the end of the ****ing world.
There are two much better solutions:
1) Fix ice so it doesn't produce water when broken in the Nether. It's not like this is a hard change.
2) Stop worrying about it. Why is it a problem if players can, with significant difficulty, get water into the Nether? Oh no, they can kill Blazes. So what? By the time they can get that, they're clearly not having a problem with killing things.
For that matter, why is Silk Touch set to such a high rarity? Adding more grinding does not make the game better, in any way.

The main reason silk touch doesn't get ice anymore is because it duplicated ice blocks while breaking the ice into a water block.
They should just make water evaporate in the Nether just like when you use water bucket. For getting silk touch though, I think it's been overlooked too long. It used to be used for spawners, ice, etc. but now since it's only for decor. It should get it's hype lowered to a reasonable level. :/
Edit: I forgot to mention that I am now back to deleting the Dim folder to kill the dragon over and over.
Remember guys that it can get mycellium and end stone as well and cobwebs. It's also seriously OP when it comes to getting stone blocks. You could get a stack of coal's worth of stone like nothing.

Moving mycelium is a tiny advantage, considering I can grow a shroom tree easy and mushrooms being all over the place any ways.
Silk touch can't pick up webs.
It can pick up smoothstone, but I can also bake cobble to get it, which I have tons any ways. Who wastes it on stone?
If you get a sword with silk touch, you can get cobwebs, and vines.
You can obtain vines with shears in any case,
and you can obtain STRING from cobwebs, with either shears or a sword.
None of these phenomenon are dependent on Silk Touch. Cobwebs cannot be obtained outside of Creative.
EDIT: Kyo, the minimum level for Silk Touch is 25. Congrats!
I know you're trying to make Kyo look stupid, but he was doing the calculations to have the best chance of getting Silk Touch, which is not the minimum level you can get it.
Anyway, if they don't plan on re-adding Mob Spawners to the mineable blocks with Silk Touch, then they should reduce the minimum level to something like 5 or 10.
And/or make the enchantment system not random and fully player-controlled
I wasn't. I've heard stories of people who save up, like, 50 levels for these enchantments.
Kyo was smart for only spending 30 levels, and even luckier for getting it on a diamond pick.
I tend to use it while building or minine glowstone (you get the block instead of a few dust items). Misplace a bookshelve? Hit it with silk touch and you won't have to go through the hassle of crafting it again, and you won't lose 6 wood in the process.
Another thing I use it for is a bit less obvious. Usually, when I mine a lot of redstone, my inventory gets clogged up with stacks of redstone dust. Right now, there's no way to combine them into a block like with iron or lapis (9 dust -> ruby block maybe?), so the next best thing is to mine the ore directly with silk touch and then break the ores with a fortune pick whenever you need some more redstone. You can do the same thing with lapis if you're in a hurry and you don't feel like crafting the dyes back into a block at the time.

You can use water in the Nether to make effecient Obsidian Farms over the Lava Oceans.

Um, Silk Touch does not work on cobwebs, and I thought that Endstone could be obtained normally?
I killed the dragon and enchanted again, I got:
Gold Pick: Lv50 enchant Unbreaking III
Diamond Pick: Lv47 enchant Efficiency IV
Yay...
I could probably terraform a couple hundred chunks in celebration after I finally get silk touch.
If you get a sword with silk touch, you can get cobwebs, and vines.
Also unless they changed it, you get regular cobblestone when you destroy end stone. At least that's how it was in the 1.9 prereleases.

This was stupid, so it was fixed in 1.9 pre-release 5.
Oh well. It should at least be a mid level item then.

After defeating the dragon again:
Diamond Pick: Lv30 enchant Silk Touch I
Maybe the level was dropped, who knows.
It was really neat when it was first introduced, but its appeal dropped off.
Mostly because of the "ice in the Nether" debacle.
