Jeb should definitely fix the terrain generator so we do not have to start a new world. We paid for the game, we've invested time in it,we built our house and inventions from the ground up. WE SHOULD NOT BE FORCED TO START OVER!
I could care less about the mixed biomes but please, don't make us start over.
I think it's nice to have such varied terrain generation.
It adds to the randomness and fun of the games world generation.
I mean, if it went like this
Tundra
Taiga
^^^^^^
Mountain
Plains
Forest
Swamp
^^^^^^
Jungle
Desert
Then it would all be boring as you would know what you would find nearby.
The current generation makes all sorts of random and whacky combos. If biomes became climate dependent, then there would be no interesting combos like the ones that are supplied in the OP. Not to mention I will lose my favorite biome combo of Desiga with a river flowing through it.
I rarely say this, but this is something that should be part of a mod and not actual gameplay. That way, people who like random biome generation won't be screwed.
they told us not to get too attached to our worlds.
They also told us new maps wouldn't be necessary after the "final" 1.0 release.
The realism argument is just plain silly. Minecraft isn't real. I don't care if my biomes crash into each other or don't make sense.
Can't we just get Jungles in unexplored terrain like with other updates? It's bad enough our server is afraid to explore for just that reason, but at least we wouldn't have to abandon a map that Mojang said wouldn't need changing.
If one person says "just don't change it then", I will find you and make you watch while I kill your pets.

If they did make it generate in unexplored areas would cause biome problems, causing map resets to avoid terrain "scars", causing whiny bitchers to come out of the cracks. Also, that last line, you are definatly the hight of maturity.
Wow, this whole thread is silly. The idea of having 'realistic' biome generation is just stupid. There is no point to it, other than to please a very small minority of people.
Oh, and for the record, parts of Russia very quickly go from jungle to tundra. Not that much of a stretch to have them next to each other in Minecraft.
I think that using the 'it is not realistic' argument should just be ignored by everyone, for any and all aspects of Minecraft.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
I use the FTB modpack, because it's fun, and extremely convenient.
I just want to point something out. See in Canada there, how some of the biomes line up?
There's Taiga right next to a rain forest, right next to temperate grassland, next to a desert and some mountains... Specifically, there's a spot in Western Quebec there where a small strip of rain forest is lined up right against the northern Tundra.
And I can personally say that there are plenty of swamps that dot the many lakes and rivers.
Taiga, Tundra and Jungle can and do exist near each other.
If they want to change the generation and make it more structured, they will. But there's nothing wildly wrong with how things are now.
If Jeb makes the biomes to arrange themselves, the terrain would lose its random position making the game more predictable and probably a lot of people will complain.

This, dear god, this. So no one liked the generation in 1.8-1.0 seemingly. So now you want the biomes to be arranged in a predictable pattern? So whats to make this great wonderful idea not incredibly boring?
Of course I care! What a ludicrous question. You obviously read the post where I said I could care less implying I do care about biome generation but I am fine with it either way Jeb decides to take it.
The point of the previous post was to express dissatisfaction with having to start over in a whole new world even after we purchased the game.
I think you guys are investing too much into this idea of "randomness" in biome placement.
Things wouldn't get "too predictable" for biomes to make a thread of sense. In fact, a little rhyme or reason would add some dynamic to searching around for what you want. Knowing the general formative patterns of terrain would allow us to become explorers, rather than blindly stumbling upon random biome after random biome. Having a sense of what might be over the next hill is not a bad thing. That's gameplay dynamic.
The current randomness of biome placement is not a feature. It's just sloppy design.
Which was perfectly understandable when the game was in alpha/beta stages, but now that it's officially released it's more of an issue. A lot of people don't want to have to start over every time there's an update, that gets boring fast.
Imagine having your characters wiped in MMO's or on BF3 every time they patch something.
I totally agree with this. I don't want to paste all my structures into a new world yet again because I want to have jungles, etc. It takes a lot of time to rebuild this way. I wouldn't mind exploring further into my world and suddenly finding jungles, etc.. As for the climate stuff, I think that is just awesome. Snow next to jungle makes total sense :biggrin.gif: Still, some weather patterns have changed the scape of my farms, breaking sugar canes just because the water froze over.

Thats one of the things i personally like of the game: you dont really know whats going to be behind the next hill, forest or w/e. If you Know where the biomes are, you know where you gotta go so that would kill exploring, rather than making it better right? Im not sure if its going to make it better or worse. Please give me the prove that its "not a feature" as you say. Im almost 100% sure Mojang didnt stated ANYTHING about that.
You see, the thing I dislike is a bug! No one has ever stated that it's a bug, nor have they ever said it would be fixed, but it's a bug because I dislike it and I say so!
Now everyone agree with me or I'll start giving smart-ass answers to people who disagree with me!
(FYI - This has been my dramatic re-enactment of this sad little thread.)
We were told we wouldn't have to generate new maps.
Are you gonna cite your sources on that, or are you just going to keep fabricating things "Mojang" said?
Random biome placement is cool. I like the point someone else made that if it weren't random, then the inverse would be true - they'd be predictable. Is random boring, or is predictable boring? That's for you to decide, but I'm on the side that says predictable is boring.
Besides, it's fun to have unrealistic biomes smashed next to each other. Isn't it?...
And just for the record, I'm going to quote this post because I think a lot of people missed it.
I represent no one other than myself, and apparently reality, since you just called a natural occurrence a "freak of nature". I'm not humping Mojang's leg here. I've pointed out that biomes are more diverse than people claim.
Like I said before, just because it snowed on palm trees doesn't mean tundra existing right next to jungles is anything but an staggeringly unlikely fluke of nature (and in this case a figment of your imagination). In game terms it just looks like sloppy design. The biome generation is an incoherent mess no matter how many pics of flukes of nature you can find on Google images.
Are you gonna cite your sources on that, or are you just going to keep fabricating things "Mojang" said?
If I could dig up the quote I would, but the internet is a big place. Jeb assured us we wouldn't have to generate new worlds. I'm not the first person in this thread to bring up that point.

There is a lot of room for uncertainty in having biomes generate in a manner that makes some sort of sense. The biomes on Earth certainly don't seem to "predictable" according to all the adventure stories ever written. There are a ton of variable possibilities. Preventing tundras from spawning next to jungles or deserts isn't going to change that.
Besides, it's fun to have unrealistic biomes smashed next to each other. Isn't it?...
Wait... didn't you just quote, in the very same post, a previous post about how realistic it is for such things to happen?
It would be fun if it didn't happen practically every time a biome is generated. As it stands, it just looks sloppy.
It's amazing how consistently you guys defend Mojang's glaring **** ups. It's not like this is a feature of the game. It's an obvious design flaw. When Jeb starts talking about making a more coherent world generator where tundras don't spawn next to jungles and desert, I'm going to remind you guys about this thread.

I disagree. I don't think it's sloppy design, I think it's good design. Do you understand the difference between subjectivity and objectivity? This is a subjective issue, and I don't feel like you know what that means.
If I could dig up the quote I would, but the internet is a big place. Jeb assured us we wouldn't have to generate new worlds. I'm not the first person in this thread to bring up that point.
Yeah, I know you're the first person to bring it up in this thread, but that just means you aren't the first to continue the spread of a lie. I for one don't recall Jeb or Notch ever making such an outrageous claim that we'd never have to generate a new world to receive the new features.

And that's where we disagree. I don't think it's a "glaring **** up," I think it's just another part of the Minecraft world. Again, you don't seem to understand subjectivity, because this isn't a "design flaw." Stop trying to shove your opinions down our throats, Ovus, under the guise of ceaseless whining like, "Oh, it's a bug, fix it Jeeeeeb," and, "But it's a design flaw, guys!" It's not a flaw, it's not a glitch, it's not bad design, it's just. Part. Of. The. Game. And most of us like it, so stop spamming the forums with threads about this.
In retrospect, I doubt this will be very convincing.
As far as I can tell, all the OP is suggesting is that the transition between biomes is done a lot smoother.
I completely agree with it.
It has nothing to do with realism, it just looks weird for a giant jungle, forest or taiga to suddenly stop. Bordering a completely different biome.
All that's needed is just adding a small zone in between biomes, just grass with a very smooth transition between grass colors. At the borders of biomes, everything should become less dense: less snow, less trees, less swamp etc.
That would look a lot prettier.
Although this isn't what TC suggested or wants, this is a great example of a positive suggestion. A lot of the posters in this thread could learn from this guy. See how Blue Orion suggested an improvement, rather than just trash the current one? Yeah.
I could care less about the mixed biomes but please, don't make us start over.

A failed attempt at humor perhaps.
I was attempting to point out how irritating the classic "just don't do it" response can be.
No disrespect to fluffy

WHAT?
Well if the map can't generate jungle biomes, I would consider it broken.
Are you kidding me?
You really think it's a "feature" that tundras constantly spawn next to jungles or deserts?
Word to this.

Old worlds will not get errors (hopefully this means the problem of biomes shuffling around has been fixed?).
He specifically made sure old maps were not affected.
You still need a new world to get jungles.
So yea, not a single tweet from him saying "You won't have to generate new worlds!"
I disagree. I don't think it's sloppy design, I think it's good design. Do you understand the difference between subjectivity and objectivity? This is a subjective issue, and I don't feel like you know what that means.
