I thought that Notch was permanently giving the lead development status to Jeb, so that he could move onto newer things. When did this "I'm coming back in a few months" come up? And even if he did come back, he said he wouldn't pull ranks, so Jeb would still be lead developer of Minecraft.
I don't want him to come back. He would just come back and complain about including too much modder content into the game. It's also going o throw a wrench in development, because anything Jeb comes up with is going to have to go through Notch again, and if they aren't in direct communication at the time, it's going to delay the idea progress. Leave the ego at the door Notch if you're coming back. Your game isn't the best thing in the world because you coded it.
Should Notch return?
Well, that is up to Notch, and no one else. Pretty shitty how so many people hate Notch for bringing you a game you love. I will never understand why so many idiots hate the creator of whatever book/movie/videogame that they are obsessed with.
Minecraft is not your game. You didn't create it, and if you only like 95% of what is in it, you will just have to deal with that, you entitled jackasses.
Notch made Minecraft, show some damn respect.

I use the FTB modpack, because it's fun, and extremely convenient.
Notch should come back if he desires. Jeb is the better lead developer but notch is also great. I do agree though that he got pretty lazy around when the beta started. Just because someone doesn't listen to the community's suggestions, doesn't mean that they are a bad developer. I think they should just ask for certain input on bugs and additions. If you let the community decide on what should be added and how, you will never satisfy everyone. We're actually lucky that they give us a chance to be in on decisions because you don't see other developers asking their community what they want added to a game. Its good that Jeb listens but look at the ladder situation. He changed it due to request and then changed it back due to request in result, not satisfying everyone. So as far as notch not listening to the community on suggestions, I think it would be better that way. Bugs are easily provided to them from the wiki also.
i thought notch was doing alright... right up until mushroom cows and pissed off useless snowmen. the other two are doing fine without him, 3 coders is better than 2, but i wouldn't mind if he doesn't come back =)
Shroomcows are awesome!
The snowmen are kind of stupid looking and useless, though.
Just remember guys, Notch made this game he can do what he likes when he likes, he only creates games HE wants to play, would you create a game YOU dont like? Where is the fun in that?
No I wouldn't. But if you no longer have an interest in a game, you shouldn't hang around and continue trying to add your own ideas on how to make it better. You're not going to be investing lots of time with your game anymore, so you shouldn't have a huge say in what will make it better.
He left it to Jeb. Jeb has fresh ideas for the game. Notch just shouldn't come back with a whole lot of stale ones.
I think the game has benefited from both of their efforts.
Notch's concept of the game was pretty much the only thing holding the whole thing together up through early Beta.
As the company grew, Notch found he could hire some help and thus free up some time to work on other game ideas he had. He also accepted new responsibilities borne of heading up a growing company. These things mean he had to spend less time working on Minecraft. As you may know, if you have less time to work on something complex, you either delay the release of the product, or you make a decision to rush some things and cut others. Notch made the decision, however we may like it or not, to get this marketable by 18 November. He cut the modding API and some functional details out in favour of adding a thematically appropriate ending and fleshing out the Nether.
Apples, sheep regrowing wool, and a lot of the things we like about 1.1 were first seen in Infdev, Alpha, and Survival Test. That's Notch's heyday. Jeb didn't invent these. He took what was already in the pipeline and quickly and efficiently made it a reality. But he had the free time and infrastructure to do this because of some of the groundwork Notch already laid.
As for enderdragons, strongholds, and whatnot, I agree with those who say they didn't get much from it. It's a cool sprite but it doesn't add anything to the game for me. Strongholds are cool by themselves, and didn't really need justification by being tied to the Ender portal. New nether content was needed. I think this went well.
The modding API is something Minecraft sorely needs, but I think it was the right decision to delay it until after the release. Once Notch had decided to lead the game to release on a certain date, focusing on producing a finished vanilla product became more important than producing a very unfinished product with a beefed-up code bridge. That's like saying, "I don't care to finish this, so here, you guys finish it." Truth is, Notch knew his audience: most people who play Minecraft don't know how to code.
Ok.. I thought about saying something in the "jeb > greater than notch" thread .. but I let it go. It was borderline.
But this is just rude. How about a little respect for Notch. He did, after all, create the entire base game himself. You would never have heard of Jeb without Notch.
Jeb being the lead guy right now doesn't mean that Notch is not collaborating in some manner. Even if just in ideas. He's still there, in some capacity.
This whole thing is really childish. Trying to create division between the two lead Minecraft develoeprs.. petty squabbling about who is best.. It's like grade school.
It's times like this I realize the truth of what people say, of how young/immature this forum is. If in mentality if nothing else. Way too much drama and cliques and squabbling!
That quote sums up Notch quite nicely.
You posted this in the other thread. We get it, you really dislike Notch.

But seriously, he was a bit of a stubborn let down much of the time.
