I just checked the snapshot. Vines will act as vines as they do now ehn not on a block, and vines will act as "fixed" ladders when they are on a block.
...I just reread the tweet and saw that vines will only be climbably if attatching to block. Wow.

Users lack the mental capacity to have intelligent discussion, and mods lack the mental capacity to make intellegent decisions... I give up trying to share my intelligence with the world.
one big problem with vines. They spread EVERYWHERE they can. this is a problem for construction with them as if left unchecked they could take over your house. otherwise you have to build expansions to keep them from spreading.

Your a such a great friend that if we were both in a falling plane and there was only one parachute... I would feel really bad and think of you often.
Actually they generally stick only to the type of block you first put them on.
I put them on my house expecting them to cover the entire thing, but if you put them on wood they tend to remain mostly on the wood; if you put them on stone, same deal. I might need some peer review verification on that, but that's what I've come to notice.
It would be cool to have free hanging vines be climbable.
My idea is this:
When walking through free hanging vines they should act as they always have (letting you pass right through), but if you walk within a certain distance of the vine (1 block away would be good, maybe right on the block the vine occupies would be better) and hold ctrl you would grab onto the vine. As long as you are holding ctrl you are able to use W and S to climb up and down the vine. If you let go of ctrl you let go of the vine (hopefully not falling to your death in the process). I think that function would add a lot of fun possibilities to Minecraft.
That would be rather hard to implement though... You would need to add code so you can't climb through the vines. Plus, I don't believe you can change a characteristic of a "block" with a key without having some sort of lag. (Correct me if I'm wrong.)
Maybe Jeb should change the way ladders work. Using the jump key to move upwards and releasing to go down seems like a better control scheme than relying on the directional keys.
Edit: Basically snatch the physics code from water and allow sneak to keep you from "sinking".

Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.

Btw, what's with the different text?
I'll admit I know nothing about coding so I have no idea how difficult that would be to add to the game. I just think walking up to a vine and holding a "climb" button to climb up and down the vine then and releasing the button to let go of the vine would feel very natural. I'm sure someone could figure out how to do it without putting too much strain on the game, but who knows. Hopefully Jeb will just add rope eventually and make my idea obsolete. Also the different text is a font called Georgia. It's in the little formatting bar, or whatever you call it.
I have a little bit of verification with vines and ladders, you cannot climb from the vine to the ladder. When climbing from below, you climb up the vine, and then get stuck below the hitbox. But, of any part of your head is already in front of the hitbox rather than below, you can climb onto the ladder. So, with vines below the ladder, your face needs to touch the ladder to climb it, similar to the mechanic where you only climb up a ladder if your feet touch it. I was hoping do place vines below ladders for parkour, but I now see this won't work.
Well...Technically it's just a snapshot and therefore isn't officially part of the game yet.
Ah, who cares, we can climb vines now! :tongue.gif:
There, predicament solved. :tongue.gif:
I hope he makes rope soon.
You want to constantly start climbing vines unintentionally while walking through the jungle?
Good luck with that.
Vines ARE climbable :biggrin.gif:

They probably won't. you can't stand on top of vines. But it does make it a nice alternative compared to ladders.
