I've seen several videos now where they talk about the improved transitions in 12w01a, then proceed to show a very harsh desert/forest biome transition, and yeah - I don't know how they manage to convince themselves it's a smoother transition, but it's still a harsh transition thanks to the block type actually changing. That's not what Jeb changed anyways.
It's the swamp transition that got changed, not the desert/forest transition. I finally found a video that properly. It's a lot better than it used to be.
So please, take the time to explore your world a bit and actually find a swamp.

Is there actually a gradient for sand to change color slightly with different temperatures like grass does? If not, why not? This would make the transition from sand to grass a lot smoother.
There is no gradient colour change for the sand texture.
It's not there because there is no such thing as the colour of sand changing to grass.
