On my server, me and my friend traveled to the nearest mushroom island and starting building on it. After about a week (real time) of being on the island, we both had our houses set up, but when I started up the server to play one day, it was nighttime, and hostile mobs were spawning all over the island. We waited through the night and stayed until the next night to see if it was just a one-time glitch, but it wasn't. Hostile mobs spawned that night and still continue to do so every night on the island. I have no idea why this is happening.

I used to write original signatures, then I took an arrow to the knee.
This biome consists of flat landscapes and high hills, has Mycelium instead of grass as its common surface block, and tends to appear as islands far from the spawn of a map and any significant landmass. It is the only biome where Huge Mushrooms can spawn and grow naturally, where mushrooms grow in full sunlight, and where Mooshrooms spawn.
It's actually composed of two different "biomes" - the shoreline, which is flat, and the mainland, which is more undulating (hilly). Contrary to popular belief, trees can be grown in this biome, but not next to Mycelium which will take over the dirt square from the sapling and un-plant the sapling. A player can create a Mycelium-free zone with cobblestone and grow a tree in the middle of it on freshly placed dirt. A player is also able to place saplings on mycelium and use bonemeal on the sapling to grow it. Otherwise, it is advised to collect wood (and saplings) before settling here.
No mobs other than Mooshrooms (including hostile mobs at night) spawn in this biome. This includes caves, abandoned mines, etc... below Mushroom Biomes, meaning exploring underground is relatively safe. Dungeons with spawners will still spawn mobs, however, and caution should still be taken when exploring (as sometimes "fingers" of other biomes project into mushroom biomes).
As of 1.0.0 player made structures in this biome are exempt from the "no mob spawn" rule: Only mushroom terrain originally created with the map seems to prevent mob spawning.

huh, I was under the impression that Hostile mobs do not spawn in the Mushroom Biome, you know, like the updates used to claim. smart ass.

Wikipedia says : Huge mushrooms are composed of several blocks: mushroom stalks and either red or brown colored blocks for the cap. HERE >These blocks provide a valid spawn area for hostile mobs< HERE, and may be destroyed by hand to yield 0-2 normal mushrooms. The texture for the blocks which make up the cap depends on their position on it; for example, the corner block of the brown variety has 3 sides with the brown texture and 3 sides with the pore texture, while a block in the middle of the cap has only its top face covered with the brown texture and the others covered with the pore texture.

Its not your personality who makes you who you are, its your DNA.
I suppose it's a balance issue, because theoretically it is possible to permanently restrict mobs to specific biomes. Look for instance at wolves and mooshrooms, they don't spawn in the desert, no matter how many blocks of pine logs or mycelium you bring there.
The converse should be true, hostiles don't spawn in mushroom biomes, no matter how many cobble blocks or regular grass bits you bring there.
It keeps the place special and makes people want to explore out to 4400, 2500 just to reach a mooshroom island.
Now, maybe not so much, if it's inevitably going to start sprouting spiders the minute you place a torch on it.
I think normal mobs shouldn't spawn there at all. But only 1 new hostile mob spawns there...

@Yumdo I wouldn't take wikipedia seriously. it is an open editing source prone to bias opinion and false or incorrect data. As said before the actual release said that mobs would not spawn on a mushroom biome.
However in saying that i will quote "sometimes "fingers" of other biomes project into mushroom biomes". While Mycelium can and will spread to dirt blocks, the biome boundaries itself will not change. So one can speculate 2 scenarios which may have lead to the spawning of mobs that do not involve player intervention.
Speculation 1: There was a 'finger' of another biome projecting into the mushroom biome which was covered with Mycelium. You might have had a torch which lit it up at one point but then accidentally moved it without realizing. Thus when night time came it allowed the spawning of mobs. With such a limited amount of space in which to spawn (assuming there were few or no underground air pockets beneath it) all mobs that would normally be spread over a wide area would be concentrated into this small space then begun walking around making it appear like they were spawning all around.
This is the most likely scenario. In which case your best option is just to light up the island or at least areas in which you had lights or buildings.
Speculation 2: This is less plausible but not impossible. When they say other biomes can 'project' themselves into the mushroom biome they might mean it quiet literally in the sense that Mushroom biomes eventually become other biomes/ get taken over by other biomes. while Mycelium is unique to a mushroom biome it does not need it to exist, If the mushroom biome were to get taken over or transformed into another biome the player would be completely unaware of the difference till night falls or they notice an extreme lack of mooshrooms.
Like I said this is an unlikely scenario
other causes can be someone through plugin means has changed the biome from a mushroom biome to something else. of course that requires a moderator or admin with rights. Possibly a glitch as you said which would seem unlikely but with minecraft's reputation you cant exactly rule it out. Good luck either way.
