I've been playing Minecraft since Beta 1.2 and we decided to restart our map when 1.9 / Minecraft 1.0 hit because the terrain generation was getting horrible with new chunks not matching the old ones and the biomes being completely shifted around with the new map code.
So does anyone playing with the new snapshot can tell me if the new generation tweaks Jeb did (hills, beaches) a gonna mess up old maps again? And if yes, in what way? Some half-hills, I can deal with, but biome shifts make me depressed.
It's almost completely different from the 1.9 generation so probably.
Is it?
I don't think biomes are gonna change... beaches seem to be the only new thing that might **** things up... Hills are just adding an elevation factor... Well. We'll see.

jeb_ added code to existing 1.0.0 biomes to include beaches as well as less-flat terrain. He didn't shift any biomes, just added to them. source
You're unlikely to get abrupt walls on new chunks in this update, but it is technically possible due to the terrain having the freedom to generate more varied. Biomes won't become other biomes unless you change your seed, so you shouldn't worry about your plains becoming swamp-colored or anything. However, one of the older snapshots re-introduced snow in taiga biomes, so if you live in a pine forest it will be covered in snow if weather occurs.
Also, beaches are just sand blocks thrown on top of shorelines during generation. Unlike 1.7's more complicated beaches, they won't mess up your world.
