I played the weekly snapshot of this week.

I pressed F5.

I ran around and observed the amazing and sexy terrain generation.

Then I jumped into a ravine, and I died.

I saw myself falling over, and turning into smoke.

I don't know if this is SSP only, but if it is in SMP as well, then my life is complete. All they need to add is a death sound now for the players now, something like this

*becomes suicidal*

It's interesting how broad the updates are. They like to add subtle things like that and the fast fire spread. You have the initial hook of the updated features list then you explore the hidden ones for yourself.

the falling over and exploding is the default for all mobs and players, it's been like that for a while.

No, it has been like that for mobs. Players just disappeared up until this point.
