Besides it isn't impossible to bring back. It just takes a lot of isolation. You put one generation in one child class, and the other generation in the other child class. You choose which child to inherit.
I was thinking the same thing, more or less. But that assumes that the land generation code was designed that way. It may not be. If it was and I was in Jeb's position, I'd probably code a bajillion little fun world types to add in, instead of only one that is just a grass canvas. That's why I'm thinking the code might be a bit messier than is ideal. Layman's reasoning.
I hope to see "Classic" as an option, yeah. I don't know that I'd use it, unless maybe it meant I could see my main file's seed make roughly the same location as it did back in the very end of Alpha. I'd like to see a ton of world types, just for those that want them. It's a feature that is presenting options -- I say we get as many options as can be conceived of and can be developed in reasonable time. From "only hilly grasslands" to "skyworld."

Make note: I generally avoid being insulting. If I sound insulting, I'm probably joking.

It wouldn't make any sense though. It would be great as a mod, but to be offically in the game? That would just be... weird. Imagine it, a button in World Options saying terrain, with choices: Alpha, Beta, 1.0.0. Does that make sense to you? Why would a developer put previous versions of his/her game as a choice in the game?
Like I said, it would be great as a mod, but to be official, it just seems weird.

I think a terrain option labeled "Classic", which would generate worlds like Alpha, would be ideal.
It is plausible and I think it would be a great PR move for Minecraft. Remember when CocaCola changed their recipe, because they thought people were getting tired of the same old formula that they had for years. Their sales started to plummet as people rejected the new formula. What did they do to solve this?
They release CocaCola Classic, and really I don't think they offer the new formula anymore. It's obvious that a large number of the community wants the old flavor of Minecraft back. If Mojang really wants to be a successful business it needs to understand that the customer always comes first. We may have already purchased our copy of the game, but our experience with Mojang as a company will affect whether we purchase future games from them.
It wouldn't be out of the question to add this into the game. It is what that option should essentially be. It should encompass the variety of ways you can play the game. If you want to play with weird floating things, chunk errors, and mutant landscapes you should be able to without having to use a mod. It's the kind of polish I expect from a game such as Minecraft. Why give us a few modes which a half decent modder could code up in a week, when you could give us a mode in which the most loyal of Minecraft fans enjoyed throughout Beta.
We didn't play the game, because we knew they would completely rework the terain generator. We played expecting them to some day fix up the borders and extend the map height, and eventually make the biomes better. We played Minecraft for the experience and many of us took that experience for granted and Notch came along and took it away. We deserve to have it back. IMHO it's a full bodied experience. It didn't need a massive overhaul of everything to make the game better.
But now they have a load of things to add to make that ideal better and I look forward to the changes to come.I just want that space where I can play the old way. I think the people who are now paying full price deserve it even more since they are paying double the price that I paid. The new customers should be aware of what Minecraft was like and make decisions on their own about which version they want to play.
I have and it's barely like 1.7.3. I do not like the new smoothed terrain. Until they flatout remove all the smoothing that came with the new terrain generator, it wont be superior to 1.7 to me. Besides I guess you guys don't remember the high possibility of spawning in a tundra biome, the unique chunk error pillars, and ever better new snapshot terrain.
Besides it isn't impossible to bring back. It just takes a lot of isolation. You put one generation in one child class, and the other generation in the other child class. You choose which child to inherit.
I would quit complaining about the new terrain if they added an option to switch with the old. I'm sure a lot of other people would do the same. It would be the ultimate fan service to do this one thing for us and I hope it is planned in the future. At least once a mod is made that does it, they could integrate that mod into the official release. So someone is going to make it happen one way or another and once it does happen, it should be included with the official release for a 1.2, 1.3 release.
You see, THIS is why I made a topic informing of MCNostalgia and The Alpha Mod, for people like you man(not trying to sound mean with that). Here you go:

For playing in old terrain with 1.0.0 content:Alpha Mod
I don't get why everyone wants the 1.7 or alpha world generators. They weren't that great. I believe in progress.
What he really needs to do is to add a map height slider. On one end, the entire world would be flat, on the other, it would all be massive mountains.
An "advanced" option would be great, too. Then you might be able to choose the size of biomes, what biomes you want, how high you want sea level to be, etc.
Going by what people have said on the forums, that's all we really want: more options in terrain generation.

could someone post some pics about terrain generation and biome transitions
from 1.7 vs. 1.0 (and the latest snapshot)
people seem to get really upset either way
and to be honest there isn't much of a difference IMO
but I do like the latest snapshot ALOT

It's difficult though. The terrain wont look anything like it did in 1.7, because the biomes changed so much. The new lighting effects don't help either. I don't think sand transitions, such as into deserts looks as nice in the new lighting due to how bright sand appears in light. This wasn't so in 1.7.
It's just necessary. If a mod is able to do it, it can be integrated into the official release. It is imperative that one be constructed. It will save Jeb a lot of time. I mean at least there's a chance that he'll consider it unlike Notch. In the meantime lets keep on hoping, because we grew to love Minecraft one way, why force us to change it?
On a side note he could make it profitable. Minecraft 1.7 could be DLC that Mojang could charge 5 dollars for. You would get integrated support for the release, and possibly even multiplayer support. I think it would be worth paying an extra 5 (10 dollars would be pushing it) to see 1.7 in its entirety again.
It would be even more nice to see a fully fleshed out terrain editor in the game, where we can choose the rarity of everything, and choose how we want the terrain and experience to be like. Notch stated he pictured Minecraft to have such a thing back in early Beta.
I'm currently playing 1.7.3 even though it isn't as fast as the newer versions.

I would LOVE a "Classic" world type option!
An Alpha generator... I would die <3

Yes, an option for "Classic Terrain" would be much better.
