There's a reason why people play games instead of swimming endlessly for days on end with nothing to see or do. If Mojang care so much why don't they create an ocean simulator where all you do is either float, swim or drown, and see how well it sells. Seriously, run these ideas past someone with half a brain before subjecting everyone to this 'Oh wow Minecraft is so realistic now' ********.
It boggles my mind how anyone could think it was a good idea. Unless they actually added bigger/faster boats/ships and different continents that have actual differences ie a reason to explore.
They suck. They have no life in them whatsoever (Other than freaking random farm animals that is!). The bottoms of them are fugly. and they always seem to impair your ability to explore.

Wanna know Jack Sparrow's favorite country?
Somalia. Because it puts the ARRRR in anarchy! DOHOHOHOHOHOHOHOOH.
Oceans are pretty cool. If you spawn on an island without any trees in a giant one. Better hope you find an open mineshaft on the ocean floor (wood planks) or get lucky swimming around before your hunger runs out (hardcore mode)
Oceans are more fun if you have buildcraft + Zeppelin mod. Fly around with your oil tanks and fill up
Landmarks, telescope, Industrialcraft 2 miners + ov, mo creatures (manta rays, sharks, dolphins, tropic craft, ect. Oceans can get pretty interesting.
But in regular vanilla minecraft the only thing good about them (Besides easy find mineshafts) is the low surface mob spawn rate.

That would be fixed if you could build stuff out of non-wood natural resources.
Why can't you make a sugarcane pick? Or a cactus pick (for deserts)? Or make that scrub stuff drop a stick. Or you can craft dirt into a stick (like you're sifting through the dirt to find stuff). Make these tools horrible, but good enough to mine a dozen or so rock before breaking. Then, you can make another using actual rocks.
It'd be fun to actually be able to survive on an island or in a desert, without going to find a tree somewhere first.
And i bet every person who posts about disliking will say nothing but "theyre too big" "there is too many" and "every single world i generate i spawn in the middle of one(lies)"
Oh sorry, were you looking for a one-sided answer? Not happening. The oceans are big, boring and a huge waste of time.
Yippee, holding the w key for 2 hours is sooooooooooooo fun!
This may be a strange concept to the Minecraft forum but there are plenty of people that have lives outside of Minecraft and would rather explore and build for a few hours and move on rather than stare at a blue screen, as far as I'm concerned, wasting valuable time that could be spent on something fun or, dare I say, productive.
I like then, but i think it needs somethings like coral, sponges, fishes (there is code for fish but no model), more islands, maybe a few with the old 1.7.3 tropical biome, etc

2.Animals should exist and trees should spawn on the islands more commonly so players aren't forced to make a new world because they are either bored or have nothing to start off.
3.There needs to be more underwater content instead of squid so there is a reason to explore oceans.
4.They need to be smaller so I am not holding the 'W' key for 30 minutes in a boat.
I like the oceans, but when I look at them I see lots of lost potential. We need diving gear that lets us breathe underwater and move/mine faster. Nothing complicated, maybe some iron or gold ingots and a glass center for a diving helm that lets a player breathe forever, some sticks and leather for flippers to speed up swimming, and something to allow us to mine at regular speed underwater. I often find holes in the bottom of the ocean that are convenient entrances and exits to ravines, tunnels, or other dungeon content, but it can be hard to survive the trip down or up without annoying buckets of air tricks. If we had underwater gear exploring ocean bottoms would be entertaining, and new content (like hostile water mobs or underwater specific dungeons) could be added in.
For the most part, I like them. I would love them if there was underwater content, like coral, underwater hostile mobs, or underwater plants, but the challenge of exploring an ocean makes them interesting, and are a welcome alternative to exploring land, caves, and the Nether.

Helm Enchants: Respiration, Aqua Affinity
There, you have extra time breathing and mine quick underwater, read the wiki some time.
As for oceans, if you don't go into an ocean, it seems to be a lot of coast line or lakes here and there. Once you go into the ocean it's automatically a 24km journey. I think it's kind of cool but I would prefer a 3km ocean by far.
"Oceans are supposed to be big."
Why do they have to be oceans? Why can't they be seas? There's absolutely no point to making one biome about 24x larger then all the others. It seems a little uneven don't you think?
I just had an idea. If beaches are added back, then instead of having them around every body of water (or at least every lake), they could only form on the borderline of an ocean. Then it would be more realistic and still have cool beaches. :smile.gif:
I think oceans are good and bad. They can get a bit big, but they are also fun because it separates different islands and it's fun to explore them. :smile.gif:
I love oceans. I like building little docks or harbor towns near them, and then go off sailing and exploring for days on end sometimes. Two things, though, we need to see soon.
Ima learning Java. It's modding time! :biggrin.gif:
I saw a mod called something Tropics or Tropical. A quick search through the forums should turn it up. They not only had palm trees, but cocoanuts. Also, sea turtles and creepers with Hawaiian shirts on.
Oceans... oceans... yeah I don`t really care for them. I like bays, just because you can use them as a landmark. And making docks is pretty fun. Buut I mean, what is there to say about them? Here's what:
Large. Water...
So I mean really they're just... ":/"
Everyone else really has a good point about there being more. Also, there should be islands. Tiny ones [like 50X50]. Not near, or at least not very near to the mainland.

I enjoy long walks on the beach, digging holes, and fighting creepers.

That's my honest opinion.

Jellyfish are not in the vanilla game. I understand I could just install a mod, but I was talking about the vanilla version of Minecraft.
