animal breeding on smp servers needs to be changed a bit..
i.e. you have a huge farm and so excited about breeding them have abunch now you get off for the night and get on the next day whats that someone killed all of them ? hmm now what. -.-
Well I think animals should still respawn. Maybe Mojang could of just taken out the spawning when a torch was placed. I think animal breeding should be optional. I enjoyed the days when I din't have to worry about killing to many animals for food. Everyone is freaking out about the biome when I think animal breeding is more of a problem. I am not saying you are wrong. It is just your opinion and I respect it. I'm not going to freak out and quit minecraft over one thing. And yes I am the only person that voted for No. I thought there would be more. :biggrin.gif:
After thinking about it just some seconds, i think they should respawn ( kinda rarely ) in SMP, because it is annoying when you get in a Survival Server that has like 50 players, there are no animals to be seen, the same happens with a lot of other resources, but i think atleast Animals should respawn once in a while just in SMP, becuase i know im not the only one that has been in a really famous server were every tree was destroyed and you have walk miles to get enough wood for a crafting bench, the same thing happens with animals.

Balance, SMP needs it.
Animals spawning on a multiplayer server should happen and is more of a problem. Animals spawning on singleplayer is not really a problem just more of an opinion. :smile.gif:
It's not annoying, animals should breed by themselves from eating grass so there would be baby animals everywhere..
I agree, at least with the self breeding, that makes it even MORE realistic, and makes it easier. it should just be a lower rate of breeding so there aren't animals everywhere. Also, to raise another point, when the update came out, not many people on the multiplayer server i commonly play on realised that animals don't respawn. So all the animals were killed, and there aren't going to be any more.
Breeding is FUN! Its also fast and easy. I would rather just breed like 50 gazillion chooks in a pit then have to go searching everytime im hungry. Its actually quite convinient!
I cant stand the beta animal system. Sorry for the horrible photo quality but i dont have this photo on my computer anymore so i had to get it off facebook. This was one of my first worlds I started a while back in 1.3. The first night I was greeted with this. If you think that is balanced you are insane.

Animal Breeding provides a challenge to Minecraft. The need of farming to get food when you have a limited number of livestock and farming to raise the livestock makes the game better. In the end, Animal Breeding isn't necessary, but for adventurers like me, it is a key update to Minecraft.
While I cannot say I agree with the OP's reasons for his saying that animal breeding is annoying, I can say that I might not agree with this feature for what you just said, which rather amused me. You are exactly right, in that there was nothing wrong about the older passive mob spawn algorithms. I see little reason why passive mob spawning had to be changed for the very fact that it was not broken and that everyone seemed satisfied without it anyway.
Also keep in mind that the spawning algorithms for the passive mobs were nerfed several times to the point that it became extremely difficult to abuse it anyway.
There are some things about Breeding that are a REAL pain in ass. For example when you try to "lure" the stupid Mother of Father animal but they ignore you and keep following and overprotecting his lil spawn of love that as we all know is going to be, eventualy murdered. Sometimes they even ignore you a when you sticking the freagging wheat on his face and shrubbing it. If you stand with wheat in your hand in front of a baby animal its like you dont exist for them... why?
Another thing i find REALLY anoying is that you cant lure a single animal, type of animal, or a specific group (like couloured sheep). You have to fight with pigs, chickens cows and sheep to take one single animal where you want to go.
Now lets think about resources. Many people is talking about food and hunger. There are WAY faster sources of food than having to go every 5-10 minutes to check the animals and make them behave. For fast food i use a combination of melons and fish along with some meat from time to time or other things i found around the world... in fact theres A LOT OF KIND OF FOOD. Now, its the only way to get resources like wool, leather and feathers.
Nowadays its easier to find a spawner or make a trap to get arrows instead of having to farm feathers for ages and make a bunch of arrows, and its WAY EASIER to get tons of iron and make a full armor than having to breed cows and wait for a simple stack. Even if they nerf the iron armor (which prolly is going to happen because of complaints) it would be more reliable to get iron armor set or chest n legs.
About wool... Idk we have the recipe to make wool out of string, it might be simpler to make a trap and get wool out of the strings, not sure bout this.
In the end i guess we could live without breeding as it is. there are alternatives all around minecraft to replace the resources obtainable by breeding.
EDIT: with this post im not telling if i like of i dislike breeding. My point is to show some facts. If you ask me for my opinion about breeding i would say "i dont care"
i like the system. it doesnt take at long what so ever to breed. and ive never come to an area lacking less tehn 4 of one animal, and two cooked products last long enough to breed a few of the other animal. not to mention mineshafts are still everywhere, and the second you get a melon plant hunger is a joke.

I'm going to remove a torch in my backyard and watch all the monsters magically appear.
I don't agree that passive mob spawning is not flawed, In fact I believe the entire game development community is trying to shed this outdated form of spawning and have all relied on spawning methods that more closely resemble the real world in mannerisms.

Sure it adds a challenge but less mobs spawning is gone, which takes a part out of the game.

It isn't really optional. Because I play survival and I can't just go get food without breeding.
