1. If it were made more difficult, then there would be constant threads about it being too hard.
No.
Current Hard is MUCH EASIER than previous Easy. Believe me, you could die on on Easy (Crreper explosion, suddenly Skellie shoots you, you fall down and take 2 hearts damage, Spider and Creeper attack you, you're dead.
Now?
Creeper explosion, you lose half a heart, you regenerate it. You fall down, Spider hits you, Spider hits you again, creeper explodes at point blank, you get shot by another Skellie, weakened Spider hits you again, you still have 7 hearts and your armour is almost untouched.
That is Minecraft 1.0.0. Beta scared the **** out of me when I was exploring caves and suddenly heard arrow sound. Now I react to it only subconsciously, most of the time I ignore danger other than lava and kill opponent. Nowadays it's more likely that I'll lose health points due to empty hunger bar than to hostile mobs. It's ridiculous.
2. There are almost certainly mods which will add more challenge to the game.
I don't like mods, I want game that is complete.
3. Jeb can do the most good by focusing on the localization, mod API, and serious game-breaking bugs first.
I don't think that changing current damage formula or armor stats would take many days of his life, more like few minutes.
A lot of my friends stopped playing, complaining that it was just boring now. And THIS is why.
I haven't died in since 1.0 came out.
1.0.0 was the first time when I fell to lava and surivived. I fought some Pigmens, Ghasts and fell to lava one more time afterwards. Still survived.
I died once, when I had no food, hunger bar depleted, I had three hearts left and Ghast pushed me to lava (no dmg from fireball), I died because I was on fire.
But for now, there's always hardcore mode if you want more challenge.
It's not a challenge. You just have to make a farm, get Iron armor fast (not necessarily full) and create pig/cow farm. Then it's no different from Hard difficulty (or Peaceful in Beta). It's possible to die ONLY when you have no food with you.
Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't mind seeing a better balanced game but I don't want that to take priority over the API as I think that's where the real fun and challenges are to be had. There are just so many interesting ways you could ramp up the difficulty and I think modding is the best way to make all of those available.
Sure you could change the damage reduction from armor, but what if you made all of the mobs move as fast as a spider? How about doubling the spawn rate in darkness? Raising the light level under which monsters can spawn? Make it so that zombies can knock down wooden doors? Give skeletons poison arrows? I think you get the idea.
That said, making the hardest game mode drop your damage reduction from armor by 50% would not make me unhappy. I just don't want to see much real effort put into it as game balance is a black hole when it comes to developer time sinks.
If I could go into the magical interface of minecraft and tweak the armor damage reduction values, I could remedy a lot of the "too easy" complaints in 5 minutes.
The "old" minecraft was balanced enough to be enjoyable. It doesn't need to be perfect, people aren't number crunching and making spreadsheets to figure out how best to take down the next skeleton. Hard mode just needs to be hard.
The opposition to increasing the difficulty of hard mode utterly baffles me. Do you consider point blank creeper explosions doing 2 hearts of damage to someone in full iron armor on HARDCORE mode acceptable? Why can't we have a hard difficulty thats actually hard? Don't play if it you don't want the extra challenge.

Making such a change isn't exactly rocket science. We're not talking weeks of dev time just to change a few numbers in the code. Plus having the game properly balanced in the vanilla game is the responsibility of the developer, not the mod community (who are frequently going to screw up the game balance more than they will fix it, anyway).
Uh, I don't know what game you were playing but the old Minecraft was never that hard. Get bow, kill everything. Zzzz... If you took any damage at all you just shoved pork chops in your face for instant health. Arrows were trivial to accumulate since zombies dropped feathers. The only time it ever really felt like a challenge was when I intentionally did stupid stuff such as crossing the land at night without any torches and even then it was so easy to just exploit the monster AI.
Heaven forbid you actually built anything. One wall and some torches and you might as well have been playing peaceful mode. I want zombies chewing through my doors and creepers actually attacking non-natural blocks to blow up holes in my walls. Make monsters a constant threat, not something I only have to worry about if I do something dumb. Make that difficulty setting actually mean something. (No, tin-foil armor isn't going to do that. At least not for me.)

Tis far better to be a witty fool than a foolish wit.
No, tin-foil armor isn't going to do that. At least not for me.
Maybe not, but it gets us closer and it's an easy fix. Changing the AI won't make them more threatening if they still can't hurt you, it just makes them annoying griefers.
Unfortunately for this community, this is like the 10th thread about unbalanced armors in JUST this week... however some ( just some ) of the things you say are right, Armor should be nerfed a little, difficulty could have some small changes, Probably change spawnrates for different difficulties

It's not unfortunate that people are posting their concerns in a forum intended for intelligent discussion on changes in the newest updates, rather it's unfortunate that the issue exists in the first place, and this is why we post. Where do these people come from?
I think Notch already made it easy enough for little kids with Creative mode, he did not need to nerf survival at all but what everyone is posting is repetative and pointless, contact Jeb/Notch/Mojang and get it over with.
Your joking right? Because current hard mode is a walk in the park man.
...
But honestly the current Hard setting is...just... Like Peaceful to me. Even with a stone sword, and leather armor. I mean, there is NOTHING hard about it.
That is YOUR opinion, that doesn't really matter when there are probably literally a few million other people who *gasp* DON'T THINK HARD IS A WALK IN THE PARK.
Did you see that? Obvious enough? How about this: not everyone thinks "Hard Mode" is too easy.
I don't mean to be rude but that is exactly what you are being, I respect your opinion, but just because you want it to be different doesn't mean it should be. It is easy enough to use a mod that makes armor weaker and/or mobs stronger, and if you don't want to mod the game, don't wear armor and only use wood swords in hard mode.

I cannot believe YOUR attitude, the game is clearly broken by being unbalanced and too easy. And you cannot see this? Accept the fact that you appear to be blind to what makes a game good.
People, I am trying to SAVE Minecraft. For goodness sakes.
GearsDisraeli, look, go back and play 1.2 for an hour or 2. And Tell me it's NOT harder.
Yes but that doesn't fix the issue of the base game is unbalanced.
And honestly I am not so much the minority in this thread. it's 4 vs 1.
Myself and 3 others like the idea, and you do not. Math.
That was never said. Have you played alpha? If you did, you'll know what I mean, if not, you need to play it for a while.
It's called "minecraft" not "adventurecraft" While I agree that armor is too strong the game is about mining and crafting. You might as well be complaining that rain doesn't drown you if you are in a 2x2 hole. Minecraft is not "ruined" and the majority of the fanbase will keep playing.

Then what is the "adventure" update all about? I play to survive in survival mode, by mining and crafting. Your rain comparison is goofy; armor values are a simple, concrete issue thats easy to fix.
Little kids can play on easy if they want. That's absolutely no reason to take away hard mode from those of us who don't like things handed to us.
Trust me, you don't know know hard they suck. One other person I saw was whining and saying that implementing the Spider Eye made string too hard to get.
Hell, one person was suggestion an Easycore mode once, which was just a tedious version of Creative mode.
I bet some people here find Creative Peaceful too hard.

I don't doubt the inadequacy of many of todays youth, but that still doesn't mean that hard mode should be so unbearably easy. There are still plenty of youngsters, teens, young adults and older players that would enjoy a real challenge when playing this wonderful game of minecraft. Allow us our hard mode. Right now, the players opting for an easier experience can play freely on just about any difficulty, while those of us who seek the challenge and desire a higher difficulty are told to "go download a mod" or "stop whining".
THAT'S WHAT DIFFICULTY SETTINGS ARE FOR. Minecraft doesn't reward you for playing on Hard, the only purpose behind the difficulty settings in Minecraft is to give people an option to challenge themselves. Making the harder difficulty levels harder doesn't make the game less accessible for the people who would play on Easy, anyway.
Honestly, the people who argue against higher difficulty remind me of the people who insist game developers who localize a foreign game shouldn't release it with language options because they hate reading subtitles. Changing the harder difficulty settings, or adding new ones, so that they offer a challenge to those people who want a challenge, has no effect on the people who still want to play on the lower difficulty settings. It does, however, offer the option to people who want it.
Get bow, run out of arrows quickly if you don't have Skeleton Spawner/Mob Grinder. You had to use five arrows to kill a mob back then (1.7.3 and before). Skeleteon dropped one arrow on average. Now you can smack them with your fist and have full health because regeneration is faster than two mobs attacking you at the same time.
Dude, I've been slain by Spiders like, 35 times. Seriously, do you think the game is easy?
Use your brain. When you''re poisoned, back off (or drink milk). Poison doesn't stack, only the timer resets. After you're poisoned, kill other cave spiders while retreating, heal up, slash webs with sword, ta-dam, spawner is yours.

They're absolute noobs in that case, so they should play on peaceful/easy, not hard and be proud of it. I have no problem with easy being easy, just make hard something more than super easy which it is right now.
