Am I the only one who has noticed that the new oceans that generate seem to be obscenely large? I remember back when the world was mostly land, and if you came across a large body of water it was the coolest thing. Now I find the opposite to be true, and aside from where you spawn, the world seems to be mostly ocean. What are your thoughts on this? Personally, I'm not a fan.
Sample image from my server and this isn't even as bad as some that I've seen.
I once spawned on a 100x100 island in the middle of what felt like 5 ocean biomes next to each other. I switched to creative after a few days of paddling around in my boat just to see if I could find land, but nope. So, I took it like a game-made survival island, which was fun for a few days, but without caves or anything to explore, it got very old fast. I came to survive, explore and eventually thrive, not to sit on an island all day. That map solidified my hate for them. At least in that size anyway, heh.
I wouldn't mind them if there was more to do with/in them, like more kinds of sea creatures or some reason to actually go into them and explore. Maybe have NPC villages spawn at the bottom of them, ruins of a town flooded by a great wave. Or shipwrecks with treasure hidden in them. If there were interesting sea life or hidden treasures at the bottom of the ocean, there's no way to get them because you'd drown trying though. There should be some sort of diving gear like in Terraria that allows you to breathe underwater longer.
TL;DL
Yeah, I agree. I wish there were a bit smaller and more manageable, with some cool stuff in them to make them more explorable.
The water provides a nice natural border when sectioning off land in SMP, and I think they provide an excellent exploration opportunity.
Although you are correct in that they initially help with dividing up land, I find that after the server (or even single player world) gets a little on the large size the oceans become a hassle. Nobody wants to take a boat for 15 minutes to just find some more land to build on. This being said KasaraEm13 brought up one of the most popular solutions to the "problem".

One could easily travel faster by going through the nether, but more importantly: Oceans are supposed to be difficult to cross. I don't know any other way of saying this except: It's an ocean. It's supposed to be huge. It's supposed to be an obstacle. If some people think they should be tweaked, I think that's a mod job.
Tbh I have a hard time sympathizing with people who complain about where they spawn or about the world they're in. It's so easy to just pick a new seed until you find something you like.

Sure you can keep changing your world until you have a nice spawn, but it just seems they are smaller than they used to be. Perhaps I'm just an "old timer" complaining about change.
I have only seen a few worlds like that. I think you just got the wrong world for you. Some people absolutely love oceans with islands, others like large islands with little to no ocean space. There are plenty of worlds I've made in 1.0 that provides little ocean and a lot of land. I'm sure you can find one, it's not like just 'cause this world has so much that no other one will. (:

I dunno, All the worlds i've generated since 1.0 (and after 1.8 generation tweaks) have been a lot of ocean. But like you said, maybe I just have had bad luck.

I have bad luck too, in that case. I haven't managed to find a good world or seed since the 1.9pres. There seems to be a lot of water, and I mean, A LOT. I prefer mostly land and maybe a lake and/or waterfall. I seem to always spawn on small to medium sized islands or in swamps though. I don't like to start too many world to, it ruins the new-car feel of it for me, if that makes sense.
I started about 3 days before 1.8 came out, so all kinds dislike it, haha.

I'm hoping it's just bad luck. (:
Even though I'm being pretty optimistic about it, I too dislike the idea of having really large ocean space when it doesn't do remotely anything for the game. Unless you like boat travel, that is.
I'm really hoping that something will be added that will make oceans really exciting, but still keeping the ocean NOT the size of the Pacific. For the love of God, please no. xD

OK, folks, show of hands. How many of you like to hold down the W key for obscene amounts of time? XD *keeps her hand down*
It was for realism, now the minecraft world is like the real world... HUGE continents separated by HUGE oceans... unfortunately some seeds make you spawn on those huge oceans instead on the continents... but that is just like 10% of the maps... that means that 90% of the time you will start on land.
The map I just made I was looking for a mountain biome and started crossing a river. What was a river turned into a 24km ocean. I found a nice mountain biome on the new 'continent' and I've been enjoying it ever since.
At first they are scary and monotonous but afterwards feel like a journey experience for me.
I think you hit the nail on the head. The problem isn't in the size of the oceans, but the frequency of them. Bing!
Good point.
However, I've run into maybe a handful of seeds that are dominated by water. My girlfriend and I spent over two hours searching for an ocean so we could seek out a mushroom biome. We eventually did find one and set off on a sailing adventure (I love stumbling across little islands and camping on them).
Anyway, a bit OT, but we didn't end up finding a mushroom biome. We abandoned that map because we didn't find any terrain we were in love with.

I love the big oceans. They feel like oceans. Seemed like the MC world was all lakes and ponds before.
