The question is simple. I want to know which one is more popular.
If you don't know what these things are. The End is the place where you fight the Enderdragon. It has this kind of spongy like stone and has endermen and obsidian pillars strewn about the landscape.
The Aether/skylands was a series of huge floating masses of land. The Aether mod allowed you to go there and fight boss battles in randomly generating dungeons, as well as flying on pigs and moas, as well as an assortment of new blocks. You should check it out if you have a copy of 1.7.3 lying around to see it for yourself.
I like the End. I think of it as the creepy middleground between the hellish Nether and the glorious and sunlight-filled Overworld. I don't feel like Skylands/Aether would have added very much that can't be gotten in the Overworld.
I honestly prefer The End to the Aether. Part of it was that I found the Aether mod to be nearly unplayable, with respect to several aspects, when it was first release. Remember how Aerwhales and Zephyrs would spawn like nobody's business? Remember how it would prevent Moa's and Aechor petals from dropping? The Aether also made all weapons and tools from the Overworld obsolete which sucked...Punching things should never be faster than using tools, never.
As per the actual designs. I found the Aether to be too dull with its pastel colors, though I admit that I tend to prefer a darker looking game when it comes to Minecraft. Also, navigating through The End is fairly simple in SSP. Navigating the Aether was stupidly difficult especially if you spawned in mid air and had to build a bridge to land. Then, unless you have a ton of materials on you or a Moa, traveling from island to island was rather difficult. Since for the longest time Aechor Plants rarely spawned, one was limited to making a ton of bridges or using a Phyg (which is fairly useless is many instances).
All that aside, I would like to say that while I prefer The End to the Aether I do prefer the idea of the Aether to The End. I just dislike how The Aether turned out.
The Aether is fine, surely MUCH better than the Nether is now. It may have some weak points, but it still beats the crap out of the Nether.
AETHER: over 20 blocks
NETHER: oh my, 5 blocks
END: rotfl, 1 unique block!
AETHER: over 10 mobs
NETHER: 4 mobs, incredible!
END: one incredibly stupid dragon boss!
AETHER: many recipes
NETHER: two or three...
END: what is a recipe?
AETHER: interesting mechanisms (flying, bosses)
NETHER: lolwut?
END: a stupid dragon fight!
Just wanted to say that you can add bazillions of blocks and items and weapons and armors and mobs to Minecraft, but that won't make it good. Personally, I really like End stone! I think it looks cool, and adds a really cool mystique to a base when you bring it back to the Overworld. The End and the Nether don't need to be second Overworlds that you can live in forever. To me, they are just... alternate dimensions I utilize when I need to. The Nether has Nether Warts, Fast Travel, and Ghast Tears while the End is the best place to get Ender Pearls! And IMO, that's all they need to be.
Doesn't matter considering we're getting the Skylands/Aether/whatever anyway.
Also, you're saying heaven doesn't fit in with Minecraft, but hell does?
I hope you know that the "Skylands" were dropped from official Minecraft development in favor of the End. The only way to 'get' the Aether is to install the mod. Yeah, yeah, people can link Notch's Twitter all day long and point out that he said he'd finish it, but in true internet-noob style, they missed the tweet Notch and Jeb put out saying they changed their minds and turned it into the End.

20 useless stupid blocks, over 10 boring mobs, many recipes with no purpose, flying and bosses are not interesting at all.
Having quantity doesn't mean quality. The Nether is the most awesome place on MC, but the Aether is boring. Also: the Aether may have some blocks, but are all just overworld variants or stupid. Netherrack, glowstone and even endstone add more to the game because you can build great things.
And you forgot all the new blocks added to the Nether plus the incredibly useful fast travel.

I hope you know that Notch later said they were planning on adding a new Skylands dimension to replace the old idea.
I loved the idea of the aether. It added many unique possibilities. I have no idea how you could call that boring and say that standard Minecraft is interesting.
Neither. I don't like the Aether mod because it should be adding building options and providing new and interesting building mechanics that mesh well with what came before. Similarly, I don't care for the "everything you had before is almost useless now" philosophy which pervades the mod.
Edit: I realized I didn't talk about the End. Well, it's horrible on so many levels that I really don't even see why it should be in the game at all.
Personally I liked the Aether better for one reason. There are numerous dungeons, the appeal is more bright and open and the world doesn't just suddenly end like The End does. I still love The End, but with all the enderman it's a bit of a pain to build anything there without it getting griefed :tongue.gif:

“We're born alone, we live alone, we die alone. Only through our love and friendship can we create the illusion for the moment that we're not alone.” ~ Orsen Welles
The way I see it is this
-Skylands (some what like a heaven)
-Over World (Where the normal[?] things happen)
-Nether (Hell)
-End (oblivion, the place things go when they go through the void)
I feel that there should be a skylands type area to have a polar opposite to the nether, but not like the aether mod. Although I liked it Aether just didn't feel like minecraft, It felt like it was its own thing because it simply lacked simplicity. The nether and end only added a few blocks. So if the Skylands do get added (I hope they do) I really hope its not like the Aether. Just my 2¢

Stating why makes for better discussion.

I'd rather have floating islands on the overworld (like we had pre-1.8) than another dimension. Overworld and Nether are all we need.
Also, you're saying heaven doesn't fit in with Minecraft, but hell does?
No, hes saying the Aether mod doesnt fit in with minecraft style. And actually, the Aether is harder than the Nether, so if anything it would be hell.

Shame the Enderdragon boss is currently more boring than any of the big Aether three combined.
At least there were some strategy to defeating them.
