So I'd like go get to the End. I've got zillions of resources, crops, animal herds, houses, potions, tons of enchantmented stuff - everything I could want. I've found and pretty much completely explored a stronghold with an Ender portal. The only thing I don't have is the pearls to activate it - I've got something like 4.
I can usually find around one Enderman a night - going to the top of a mountain, running around to all the sides, looking down and staring at one until he ports nearby. Usually I kill him, unless it's too close to dawn and he disappears. Maybe 50% of the time I seem to get a pearl, which means it's going to take me something like 24 or so nights to get 12 pearls. I wish there was a bed that would let me sleep through the day so I could go out and look for pearls at night. It's gotten so tedious that I don't play that much anymore, which makes it take even longer.
I've looked in caves, and I find a few, but it seems like even less than outdoors. Am I doing it wrong?

Heh. Try doing it on hard mode where Endermen deal 5 hearts and 2 shot you in about a second. Don't even try it on hardcore mode. Not worth it if you don't have armor on.
The difficulty in obtaining pearls probably wouldn't feel so bad if you'd only just started playing minecraft. You didn't harvest all those other resources overnight, but you were able to start much earlier - the pearls are still a relatively new game feature.
At the end of the day, the efficient way to do anything in MineCraft is to build something for the purpose. In this case, you want to make a bigass cavern, deep enough that any endermen can't teleport up to the surface (if you discover any other caves near the entrance where you'll be fighting, you can either merge them into the main cavern or fill them with cobble). The bigger the better - you want it to stretch back as far as you can see. Luckily it's easy to attract endermen's attention, and their eyes glow in the dark...
Underground spawning rates drop overnight due to the influx of surface mobs, ditto when it's raining. Mobs, including Endermen, seem to spawn in groups (or at least they did in 1.9.5, the latest build I've got installed thus far).
My cavern uses an overhead ledge and some fences to prevent anything except spiders from getting through the main entrance (netherbrick fences and lots of obsidian, as it's pretty much impossible to stop creeper explosions in the long run). For whatever reason this also seems to stop endermen teleporting away when they get close to me. A side entrance lets me in to collect loot as need be.

You're just jealous 'cause the voices only talk to me
They're used to be very common in 1.8 pre release version, which I happen to collect tons of Ender pearls. I used them all up afterwards cause it's fun teleporting to places. XD
I don't care for The End as much as to play around and build.
My problem with getting Ender Pearls is not the difficulty of fighting an Enderman, but in the huge time sink. If there is a goal, there should always be some means of actively working towards accomplishing that goal.
Heh. Try doing it on hard mode where Endermen deal 5 hearts and 2 shot you in about a second. Don't even try it on hardcore mode. Not worth it if you don't have armor on.
I play on hardcore mode and endermen are no problem... when I can find them. They really are a bit too rare, I think. Sometimes I'm out of my base for an hour or more of IRL time, days and nights of Minecraft time, looking for endermen and don't find any. Then, when I find one, I get super excited, only to find that it didn't drop a pearl.
I suggest:
- Consistent pearl drops, for the reason stated above.
- Making them a bit more common. At first I was hesitant to go out at night for fear of accidentally looking at a swarm of endermen, and that scared (read: excited) me quite a bit. Now I just basically sit out there killing zombies and skeletons all night, and it gets kind of boring.
Blazes: easy. I have stacks of blaze rods that I got while waiting for my nether wart to grow.
Endermen: I have exactly 3 pearls.
I don't mind working towards something, so long as it is not boring. Many things in 1.0 that were "supposedly" introduced to make things more challenging are nothing more than repetitive, boring, annoying tasks.
the enchantment looting allows you to obtain more items in a single drop i got five ender pearls off of one enderman once and still am obtaining obscure items that are often hard to obtain
Yeah I definately agree, I find that the main problem is the way they teleport. Not THAT they teleport, but they tend to do annoying things like:
Teleport into water far away and become un-aggressive, making it hard to find them.
Teleport into caves directly under the character and stay there until morning.
While underground, they will teleport to a place where you can't hear them, and they are pretty much just lost forever.
I am working on it in hardcore, if you have full iron and keep your hunger up them killing you shouldn't be a problem. Also, the chests in strongholds can have ender pearls in them. Exploring your stronghold completely should be an easier way to get some of them. Some have said to get a sword with looting, but it would take so much time to get the levels that could possibly get you looting, that it probably wouldn't be as time efficient as just going out every night and looking for endermen. Also, when I go looking for them, I make sure to never stop to fight anything else because that takes a lot of time out of the night. I have 4 more left to finish my portal. Good luck.
EDIT:Someone above said potions, that's another good idea.
I've actually found it easier to collect ender pearls now then in 1.9. I found three in one night, and one time in the morning an Enderman teleported straight into my house and I got a pearl from him too :smile.gif:
I recommend Hunting in a flat area, so you can see far around you at all times. Doing that, you should average more to 1-2 pearls a night.

I'm not sure if I understood exactly, but what I did was take one of my big caverns that had a large ravine in it. I made protected tunnels (with some windows just to look nice) along the bottom to the places I really needed to get to - my slime farm, and a mob spawner for experience. Then I made a wide balcony along one or both edges of the ravine, 15 or so blocks above the floor, with a fence around it and some bumpouts to look down to the floor, making sure it was always at least 3 high. Then I got rid of most of the torches down below, so I could run along the balcony looking down at whatever endermen appeared and getting them to port up to me.
I got a half dozen pearls in what felt like not too much time. I'm not sure if it was really faster, but it was at least a lot more fun, which made it feel faster.

It's not supposed to be easy.
Nope, that would be asking for another law suit.

edit- Darn some one said that already :3

Moving fast + killing faster + more loot = win.
Try playing a regular MMO where it takes 2 months to get anything from killing a boss daily.
