I find it a lot easier to find diamonds in 1.0.0, i found 28 diamonds in about 2 hours in a newly generated world and in the next 2 days i found like 67 diamonds. Maybe its just a bad seed that you are using
I'm starting to think the same thing. On our server I have found 87 diamonds. Others have found many right under where we are down near all the lava. We did not mine for them but went down and lit the cave up and bingo. Yeah it is a risk, some have been lost, I think a total of like 20 have been lost to lava/creepers, but that is part of the fun. Others on our server have plenty of diamonds, one guy was only on for like 2 days, he has a diamond shovel, pick, and sword already on top of all that he built an enchantment table too. Seems like it is plentiful on our server. Not to mention, not just where we are, but we had built a new portal from the nether far enough away from the first one and ended up under a massive ocean cavern(HAVE NOT FOUND LAND YET) and we found 16 diamonds in like 30 min. There are still more there, maybe you should try a new seed?
Since 1.0 diamonds only generate at layers 15 and below. I discovered this by scanning layers 1-20 of a newly generated world with Cartograph G. I also found that diamonds are most common at layers 10-12. A method that I like is to mine in a straight line at layer 12 until I run into a cave, then I explore the cave. I got 20 in 10 mins using this method. Kiershars method is not quite as fun, but it works well. I learned this from experience.

Branch mining at around lvls 12 to 16 is best. Diamonds don't generate above 16 so best place is branch mine all you want at 15 and then branch mine at 12.
"What the ****?" is exactly how I responded. And yah. Layer 12
Isnt that a´lil' outdated ? I simply have no idea, diamonds are harder to get nowadays
No, it's still working great, diamond distribution didn't change (or even if it did, not by much).
Before 1.0 the best possible way was making... mob trap. You need stone for that, you need to lighten caves. So you're making diamond mine, getting chests (yep, whole chests) of cobblestone and many stacks of ores at the same time. I've gotten more than 100 diamonds when I finally had right amount of cobble.
In 1.0... you just make diamond mine :tongue.gif:

There are too many lava lakes there. There may be a little more diamonds on that level but it's less time efficient.
Diamond generation HAS changed. I have proven it with Cartograph! Now tell me, how do you plan on getting diamonds after you have expended all of the ones you have? Build another mob trap? But what if you have so many mob goodies that you never want to see another bone or piece of string again? MAKE. A. MINE.

Make a staircase down to bedrock, press F3 to show your cordinates.
Go to either layer 12 or 11 (11 works best for me, except for the fact the floor sometimes has lava), and start branch mining.
Earned 20 diamonds doing (my way of) branch mining (my way :cool.gif: ).

Well, that's great that you can use some program but I think wiki did it before you. w/e, diamonds still occur only at the bottom levels therefore kiershar's guide is still valid.
Rest of the post... seriously, leave, learn how to read and come back only then. I said, make a diamond mine.

Sorry about that, I don't know what I was thinking. Have a
