So Mojang is accesing my computer without I knowing. That's not cool, Notch.
Guess what also does this?
Skins. They've been around since I-can't-remember-when, but you don't see anyone complaining about those. Launch game, it downloads your skin. Or go on a multiplayer server-- It downloads the skins from the server, not from Mojang. How scary is that?
Not at all, really. The sound system is just a way of being able to update the resources without having to screw up everyone's jars/mods/whatnot. I find it convenient, and not at all scary.
May I further add that they couldn't do anything malicious with this if they tried. The current system only allows for sounds/resources in the resources directory, and nothing of importance should be there anyways besides the sounds. The worst they could do is ninja-swap all the sounds for really annoying variants, and there would be no reason for them to so that.

I tried playing real life. The graphics were alright, the gameplay was .
To me, the new bow sound doesn't make much sense. I expected to hear a satisfying twang, and ended up blowing bubbles. I'm quite fine with the new TNT sounds; it is quite fun to set off some TNT and run and hear it blowing up now. The door sounds would preferably sound better on chests, but that's just a personal taste. As for the new mob sounds, I'm not disappointed at all.
Those asking about how sounds are downloaded, you need to realize that the launcher does not download sounds like it downloads the main .JAR file. Instead, the client itself is what downloads sounds. It downloads them from http://s3.amazonaws.com/MinecraftResources/ . If you go to that url, you'll get an XML file describing all the sounds available to the client. When the client first plays and notices that there are no sounds, it downloads them all. Then, every time you start the client, the sound download thread runs and checks if the sounds on disk are of a different size than specified in the XML file. If the size is different, the client redownloads them without asking you or even giving any confirmation.
For the Indev sound patch, I simply removed the size check. So it will download sounds if it sees that they don't exist, but it won't redownload them ever if they do exist. In vanilla, though, there is no way to stop the sound system from doing this other than blocking off access to the internet so it can't actually see that the sounds are different, heh.
Not working. Link goes to a text page, I can't check or uncheck anything.
Not sure - it seems like they really don't work too well on my computer for some reason. They sound really quiet - especially creeper explosions (they sound really muffled, like they're under water). Anyone else having this problem?
By the way, I like the bow one. It's much better than the old one, imo. The old one sounded like a gun was going off. This one is more stealthy.
They also changed the egg throwing one. I haven't thrown a snowball yet, but I bet that's the same. Very nice!
I also like the door one, but I think it needs to be tweaked a little bit. It sounds like there might be multiple door sounds playing at once, or something like that - hard to explain.
I think the new hurt sound is really bad. Instead of the old "ow" You always hear a really bad recognizable breaking bone, no matter whether you fall down a hole or get shot by a skeleton.
BTW, Is it just me or does the new enderman stare sound not work in RC1 and 2?
Took a quick look and discovered that most of the old sounds are still in the resources directory.
Some files are renamed (like "old_explode.ogg")
Others are simply not referenced by the game and are superseded by the newer differently named files. (like drr.ogg vs bowhit1.ogg)
It seems like the only files that have truly been replaced are
I don't think they're accesing your PC. I rather think they built in a timer to activate these sounds.
So its a time bomb, or its a backdoor.
If it wasn't a game, both of these would be called viruses.
The fact is, I never authorized these. If I play on a private server, the sounds should be stored on my computer, and accessed by my client only. If Mojang wants to access my computer, they need to give me a heads up and an authorization screen.
"We're updating to 1.9.6, would you like to update?"
"We're updating the sounds, would you like to update?"
That's all I require. Sure, update and be merry!
But if you try and access my computer without my express permission, we're going to have a problem.
I like the new door sound, dislike the bow, and have yet to hear any other new sounds. Was hoping the mine-carts finally got new sounds after being notified of these new sounds.
So the Windows Update service is a virus, too? It's not asking for permission either. Just installing it when you shut down the computer.
On some level, yes. However, the key difference is that Windows Update has an option that forces it never to update. This is easy to find, and easy to do. Minecraft does not have an option, does not.

i want the old sounds :sad.gif:..
You have to replace all files manually and turn off internet before playing.
I know it's crap.
:sad.gif:
i hope they will change it like if you have minecraft 1.9 pre6- you get the old sounds and if you have 1.0 rc1+ you get the new sounds..
