As far as SMP difficulty goes, you cannot set difficulty in SMP even as server host, you either have monsters on or off. SMP Creepers one-shot at point blank.
Yes you can, open your server properties file and there is a difficulty setting. It's been there for a few versions, I don't recall specifically which one it was added in.
Yes, Creepers got buffed. They do more damage and have a larger range. I'm not going to give you proof when there are a hundred threads before this one talking about the exact same thing.
But armor also was changed. Used to be it was less effective as it got damaged, but leather gave you just as much protection as diamond it just didn't last as long. Now the different types give different amounts of protection, which does not decrease with wear. So don't expect to be able to have diamond-level protection from iron anymore.
Having said all that, the only time I've been 1-shot by a creeper while wearing iron armor is when it was within 2 blocks of me. Even then, I usually can jump back and only take half to 2/3's damage. Yes I play on Hard. No, I'm not wearing Enchanted armor.
Enemies are harder, but there is more opportunity for protection as well.
at times you can survive two blasts in a row, almost point blank, other times you get KOd from being at the very edge.
i have personally been left at 2 hearts from what seems like a pretty safe-from death distance (2.5-3.5 blocks), WHILE BLOCKING. why should outer radius damage go towards 16 hearts?
i have no opinions on how their difficulty should be set, only that they sometimes are pretty weak-sauce, and other times walking nukes.
people seem to be getting mixed results, this is partially because the closer you are the more damage you get, BUT Minecraft explosions actually has a random blast radius (meaning it is not perfectly spherical) meaning equal distance from a creeper's explosion can yield different results at different occurrences. Also, block resistance has a considerable effect on how much impact an explosion has (and thus how much you get damaged. For instance I did a test in a new world, It went like this:
:cool.gif:
the creeper exploded and I got 1.5 hearts of damage.
Oh and the sticks are the bodies
So, you see a creeper, find some cover, okay?

It’s the unpleasantness of the system that keeps me out.
I’d rather be in, in a good system. That’s where my discontent comes from:
being forced to choose to stay outside.
My advice: Just keep movin’ straight ahead.
Every now and then you find yourself in a different place."

Creepers are something that you live and learn from. Get killed by one at point blank then next time use a bow or charge at them and hit them to knock them back I only would worry about them on SMP because they can warp in front of you because of the lagging of a server.
That's a tad too much in my opinion. Even without armor you should be able to survive the blast on full health from 5 blocks away, at least on easy... I don't think even TNT insta-kills you when you wear full iron armor on easy, 5 blocks away, does it?...
I just did another test, with TnT(25% more powerful, more accurate results). No armor, full health. 5 blocks away, death, 5 blocks away, one dirt block directly in front, 3 hearts of damage. ONE DIRT BLOCK. If you can walk around a corner, jump up to a higher level of blocks, get past a tree ( :blink.gif: ) or PLACE A BLOCK if need be. It will probably save you.

They are meant to be dangerous, not just annoying.
Exactly. Creepers USED to just be annoying, but now, fear them! But...I highly doubt that was a 1 hit kill with full hearts and armor. Maybe with 4 hearts and iron...

Um, yes you can. We run ours on difficulty=2. Creepers can one shot you with no armour on, however even with leather on and stood next to them you will survive.

In my opinion they need to be stronger and smarter, like sense if you are behind a wall, and explode, dont want to be killed by a mob? play on peacefull

Mobs already were significantly buffed once. I don't see the point in making creepers 3 to 4 times stronger than they used to be while leaving everything else the same.
I just tested, you also don't die from this (full health):

What pisses me off is the fact they always spawn INSIDE your base even though its fully lit!!
Same with the pigmen in the nether. I enclose everything light it well and they still spawn inside. Makes riding rail in the nether a pain in the **** because you keep bumping into pigmen

Zombie pigmen spawn regardless of light level, just so you know, same with ghasts

Maybe make a line of pistons that extend down (so they cannot spawn/get in the tunnel), and are inverted off using detector rails? :biggrin.gif:
Or glass instead, as I do believe because it is considered to have transparency, will not make you suffocate if you ride through it.

Ok, ignoring the children in this thread throwing insults and being generally obnoxious, I can confirm a few things I've noticed on my end:
Creeper explosions have definitely been altered. The holes they leave seem to be bigger now (on par with actual TNT, not "slightly less" as they were before). I've also noticed that I am getting one-shotted from full health with them MUCH more often than before, and from much farther away.
I agree that results appear fairly random, as sometimes I fare better than others. I believe that the comments about non-spherical blast radii, and other blocks absorbing much of the blast depending on position, have a much more drastic effect on how much damage you take now.
On SMP servers, the lag does cause me to get on the bad end of a creeper explosion occasionally (far more often than on SSP), so I've had a few "incidents" recently that have left me feeling that they are doing significantly more damage now. When I saw this thread, I viewed it as confirmation of what I had already noticed.
I'll refrain from commenting too much on my feelings about this change, but my personal opinion is that this change has pushed creepers from "challenging" to "frustrating and annoying".

creepers must be bugged or something.

creeper if attacked:3 hearts damage
creeper overpowered:10 healts(i have no idea with this!)
If we need to buff then, why are they the most popular mob on shirts and logos etc.

just my opinion though
if they really got buffed for the enchantments
I don't even know what to say......... I rarely use them
so yeah
- criticals while jumping
- weapon enchantment
- armor enchantment
- potions
- can block
so i guess it's fine when some mobs do more damage and have more hitpoints.
