I think the increase in damage is caused by a variability with explosions. I was testing the explosions by using TNT (as creepers are hard to work with) and I would stand around 8 blocks away, and slowly move closer. Even at 8 blocks the damage would be around 7-8 hearts and wasn't very consistent. Similarly with creepers I've noticed that I can be one shotted from 5-6 blocks away, and maybe take 6-7 hearts at 3-4 blocks away.

I think Notch stated at one point that he dislikes one-hit kills. That's why lightning doesn't one-shot you (even as improbable as being hit is.) That's why it's possible to survive short exposure to lava (especially with burning nerfed.)

To expect creepers to 1 hit kill on any difficulty is foolish, and all this "Get better at the game" crap is just stupidity.
A server I played had no visible lag, although creepers lagged so bad if one saw you and you didn't have arrows the only chance for survival was a bucket of lava or building a wall.

Creepers (atleast in 1.9 pre 5 multiplayer servers) are OP as a truck vs a baby.
I swear they have killed me from about 4 squares away soemtimes... don't get me wrong if one falls on top of you you should expect to die but when you are attacking it from weapons length it shouldn't be able to insta-kill!
Basically: insta-kill+ambush AI+3-4 hits to kill+silent+don't die in sunlight=BS
Notch needs to fix this.

Hasn't the damage already been fixed (as of 1.9.6, I think?) I would think it definately would be fixed now that the full version is out.

I'd like creeper's AI to be improved, not their strength. It's too easy to increase strength. Instead of creepers directly following you when they see you, it would be better if they would find cover behind a block where you can't see them and they only use their follow routine when you get very close on the x-y axis (unless of course your back is turned). Also make them tsss in midair so that they explode as soon as they hit the ground after jumping at you. Now that **** would be scary, not just aggravating.
